It’s not hard to wince, until you notice that the portion being funded by the state government ($375m) is less than 1.2% of the state budget over the four year build period. It’s the same amount that gets spent on health every 45 days.

But it’s hundreds of millions of dollars, which sounds like a huge number, so it’s very easy for politicians to turn that into a scare campaign.

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

Why is everyone pretending that the stadium requirements are something the AFL just plucked out of thin air? It was part of the report from the Tasmanian Football Taskforce on what an AFL would need in order to succeed.

A stadium in a suburban area, with limited transport and no surrounding restaurants/bars/hotels, which is restricted (by council permit) in the number of events it can hold past certain hours, is NOT conducive to this.

The ABC published a good piece about this last year, including quotes from Bellerive Oval’s venue manager himself saying why it’s not suitable – search for “Hobart is getting a new stadium for AFL games, but what’s wrong with Bellerive Oval?”

Seriously… I remember having these arguments on this website in this very comments section over a decade ago.

The WWC was successful beyond our wildest expectations. We’ve now proven ourselves. We just need to sort logistics with larger stadiums now.

FA chief details biggest barrier to Australia hosting men's football World Cup

The problem with including Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia is you have 3x the number of football governing bodies, governments and overheads and potentially hours of extra travel time and time-zone adjustments to the teams and all their staff.

We’ve demonstrated the ability to manage and host a hugely successful event. Qatar showed that the “8 different cities” requirement is flexible. Maybe with 48 teams, meaning a larger number of lower drawing teams, they will be flexible and allow a limited number of 25-30k capacity stadiums. (I honestly don’t think that will happen, but worth thinking about)

The problem with that is you eliminate most locations in AFL dominated states. It becomes the NSW/Qld World Cup.

The fact that LGBTQ players’ safety is at risk if they visit Saudi Arabia should eliminate them from hosting immediately.

Australia vs Saudi Arabia battle it out to host the Women's Asia Cup in 2026

Nothing that both contracts are up for renewal this year, and the Premier has put those discussions on hold until there is certainty from the AFL about a team… and he seems pretty happy to see the funds that went to propping up Vic AFL teams to go towards a Tas A-League team instead.

Surprise new A-League bid from Tasmania

Converting North Hobart Oval makes the most sense, from a practical point of view – it’s no longer the premier AFL venue, it’s elongated shape makes it less suited to cricket/AFL and more suited to a rectangular shape, it’s in a great location, the buildings and site in general are a bit run down and could do with a refresh…

But can you imagine the emotional heartstrings that AFL Tasmania would pull if anyone considered “demolishing the spiritual home of footy in Tassie” ?

Surprise new A-League bid from Tasmania

The new rectangular stadium is proposed for Hobart. No specific location has been mentioned but the previous bid said they had discussed an old council works depot site on the domain, adjacent to the Brooker Highway.

Also worth noting that Launceston will be hosting Women’s World Cup matches in 2023 at York Park. There has been talk about a rectangular “configuration” for those events but it sounds more of a temporary nature.

It’s expected that (like previous bids) matches will be proposed for both Hobart and Launceston. The Hurricanes do it, the Jackjumpers (NBL) are planning it. It’s pretty much a given as it effectively doubles your catchment.

Surprise new A-League bid from Tasmania

Great to see Tassie included. As a Hobartian I don’t even mind that it’s Launceston. What I do mind, however, is that it’s going to be played at an oval stadium which will see any benefits in facilities go straight to other sports.

Australia and New Zealand confirm joint bid for 2023 Women's World Cup

Is this the first article you’ve read about the Tassie A-League bid that’s been all over football and mainstream media for the past few weeks?

Looks like it was you that started it?

So they would reimburse MVFC for lost profits for sold out matches that they could have hosted at Docklands?

Look at all these people from rugby league areas demanding it be a rectangular ground or nothing at all! If I didn’t know better, I’d think they didn’t care at all about the match day view of Tasmanian supporters and were just trying to make their preferred bids (how many NSW teams did you need?) look good.

Yes, I’d love a rectangular ground, it would be my preferred option, but how are you going to pay for it with 10 A-League matches a year (remembering some matches will be in Launceston)?

Tasmania, population 513,400. Perfect 🙂

The question is, when are they going to announce the host of the 2021 Confederations Cup?

So the fire alarm went off.

This headline is the sort of clickbait I’d expect from News Ltd!

2015 Asian Cup: Coach, minister evacuated from AAMI Park

If Japan got it, it would elimate Australia’s chances for another 12+ years after that.

USA is just as capable, and if they got it, Asian (AFC) countries would get a chance to bid for 2026.

Could Australia theoretically host a football World Cup?

I know what you mean, I wouldn’t expect it (unless Tasmania had an A-League team by that point.) I was just trying to think of the larger cities that do not have NRL or A-League clubs. I’m thinking of the practicalities of a venue with no tenants.

Could Australia theoretically host a football World Cup?

Football specific is nice but it isn’t always appropriate. It depends on many factors. Existing stadiums, sports teams and demand are one thing. Townsville, Gold Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong would have no problems with a 40k rectangular venue that was downsized to 30k after the event. In Hobart or Geelong, for example, there is no doubt that a 40k rectangular venue would sell out every world cup match, but (at the moment) there isn’t a demand for anything over 15k.

This has to be balanced with the fact that if you ignore the areas where only AFL and cricket are popular, then those areas are going to still be AFL and cricket focused after a WC.

.. and yet our technical report from the 2022 bid gave us a glowing endorsement!

Could Australia theoretically host a football World Cup?

So Australia = north-east Australia? Sounds like the easiest way to make it a rugby sponsored WC bid.
(Reminds me of 10-15 years ago when Jeff Kennett suggested Victoria by itself could bid for it! :P)

Could Australia theoretically host a football World Cup?

(1) Travelling is going to be a struggle as it is, let alone sharing with another country.
(2) Both nations could do a good job individually
(3) We don’t NEED another nation to co-host

FIFA have said there were lots of issues due to co-hosting by Korea/Japan. They didn’t exclude Spain/Portugal or Netherlands/Belgium, but those nations are extremely compact and have very similar cultures.

Could Australia theoretically host a football World Cup?

You’re taking the piss right?

Could Australia theoretically host a football World Cup?

It’s all flooding back to me now.. the comments on news articles, forum posts, that I was doing constantly in 2009-2010. Explaining that, no, the stadiums don’t *need* to be rectangular – the venue for the 2006 final in Germany had an athletics track around it. No, you can’t (with a couple of exceptions) have more than one venue in one city (Suncorp/Gabba). Given that we had a bid, why not just use the venues from the bid (especially as some of the proposed venue upgrades have already occurred?)
