That’s exactly why RA wouldn’t do it. I know they have post-WC reviews, and RA will do one this time, but they are dry and inconsequential.

'It's personal': The outcry over Eddie Jones' contract situation exposes a double standard in sports business

Thanks DaniE ! What makes it so frustrating is how poor the decision makes has been. In some ways, the ends justfy the means…. but ends have been poor, so the means are unacceptable.

I too am outraged at the way Dave Rennie was treated ; it’s there in the article. The RA leadership behavior and decision-making have been appalling. I suspect the RA CEO at the time was against the move, which is why he was moved along.

Right Hugh, and I think RA marketing loved the idea of the attention Eddie brought to Australian rugby.

Jim – I agree. I don’t think RA can accept that we still aren’t in our glory days, or that we deserve to be treated like world champs because of a moment that occurred over 20 years ago.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Thanks JR – since writing this article, i’ve decided that selecting overseas players is probably needed while we fix things.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Thanks Snowybaker – totally agree that tight and tough matches are essential – NRC reallllly tried to make it as easy as possible to score tries.

Thansk Jimbo – I don’t think i need NRC to come back if some sort of SU AU exists during international window.

I have fantasized about RA going bankrupt, being dissolved, and starting again!

Thanks Ezza – completely agree on the energy and interest in SR AU. Really don’t understand what that isn’t being repeated. It’s the best thing to happen to Aus rugby in ages, and I’m sure Stan/9 enjoyed the ratings too!

I think you have the 5:2:2 ratio right – maybe 2 PI teams though?

This tweet from Ben Darwin is everything:

“Covid aside In the back half of 2021 Aust rugby will play 13 professional rugby matches. NZ will play 165.”

I also completely agree that NZ coaches look great – but their success is because of what i’ve written about above – the pathways and systems that need to be put in place.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

The right coach is the right answer. Where they are from doesn’t matter.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Agreed wigeye – there is no short-term solution, and a lot of pain to come adopting the long-term solution.

I would allow selection of overseas Wallabies while this is being put in place.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Damo I had a proposal (that I deleted) for Aus to ‘subscribe’ to NPC and have 5 Aussies in each NPC squad. Might be cheaper than an Aussie competition!

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

I had a section of completely restructuring rugby – so that whole thing is aligned into RA and managed by it. But it won’t happen for exactly the reason it is needed: immense self-interest.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

You might be right! I think expectations around total player/community based need to be realistic. That base has been eroding as AFL gets a foothold in private schools too.

Love the concept – not sure I can bring myself to pick an NZ team so I keep that winning feeling though 🙂

I like this proposal !

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Yeah I decided to stay away from the Wallabies specifically, and selecting overseas players. I do see it harming our domestic product, BUT our domestic product is already poor.

Great point Micko !

Thanks DP – this statement captures the issue from a viewer perspective.

“I’m just not interested in watching Super Rugby or the Wallabies knowing that we are likely to get walloped.”

We have to stop pretending that because we were competitive in 2001, we are in the same place now. It will take humility and cause pain, but it’ll be the for best in the long run.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Apologies Ben – have to admit I’ve actually stayed away from social media and rugby articles over the past few weeks.

I don’t think Australia are bringing enough to Super Rugby in its current format. We don’t have the depth, and I’m not sure Australian teams offer much for kiwi viewers either, apart from the ability to relax and have a beer safe in the knowledge their teams will win.

At the moment, we primarily play NZ. It’s not working. I think Australian rugby needs to be reorganized so that we can be more competitive. The points I make are to emphasize that some very uncomfortable realities need to be accepted, so that we can be competitive again.

What can Australian rugby learn from constantly losing?

Thanks Tobokani,
While I didn’t explicitly state it in this article, I was trying to emphasize that the state of Australian rugby needs to be overhauled, and that the Wallaby team performances are a consequence of that.
I do agree that the Wallabies are working towards a game plan that requires skills they can’t currently execute. I agree winning is preferable to entertaining (as long as NOT being entertaining leads to wins!!!).
