I think the Wallabies would be best served in the present, and with an eye to the future, to have NL start, with CG on the bench. With a couple of reversals in a few of the matches. Have TL in the squad for experience, and leave the rest behind to be good SRP players. I think CG will overtake NL in the next few years – but he has to have some more experience and grow in consistency. Time to leave the old brigade behind.

Work with the Japanese comp to create our own version of the European Champions Cup. Tope 6 from each comp. Mix up the regular season with cross over games from Japan. Might even work better if there were separate Super Rugby AU and NZ comps in place. I think there would be money (and interest) in that comp, particularly given the number of international players in Japanese clubs.

Rooster must remodel: Angus Crichton says he'd want to 'dominate' in rugby union - this is what he'd have to change

RA should hope he picks up a Union contract in Europe for 2 years. Learn the game and get a good look at how good he is. If he learns the game well then they can offer him a decent contract to come back and play SRP and possibly the Wallabies.

This is great news. Western Melbourne will grow the links with the Pacifika community and give it a much better grass roots connection. As someone who lives close I can’t wait to go to games in a full stadium – even if it is only 5K. And if they can run some buses from the train station – even better.

PE backed consortium 'in final stages' to save Melbourne Rebels with $30m injection and link with A-League club

It’s sad to say but Tim South is becoming a liability in NZ teams, after many years of great service. He struggled to take wickets in the test series, and tends to go for lots more runs that he used to in the shorter formats. Sad to say but his time is coming to an end.

'Special to watch': David's demolition propels Australia to last-ball cliffhanger win after bowlers earn unwanted record

I appreciate the article, it’s good to look at things from different perspectives. Australia doesn’t have a depth problem, it has a lack of standout performers in nearly every position. That’s why we’ve had the revolving player door for the last few seasons, each successive coach trying to gfind the stand outs, or at least the stand out combinations. And it hasn’t yeilded much because they have not come to the fore. So firstly a question – why is it that we have a big talent pool – but not the exceptional players like other countries. My guess is that its coaching, at all levels. Next – what do about it? Shmit and co need to come to terms with this, both in raising the level of coaching across the country – but also recognise that lack of top end talent. They’ll need to pick and develop players who might not be a lot different from those they leave out, but they have to start somewhere. They’ll have to take some educated guesses on which player have the higher ceiling and then work hard to get them there.

Wallabies depth chart: The list that dispels the myth Aussie rugby doesn’t have enough players

I suspect so… not one to change a winning formula. Personally I’d swap Mckenzie for Faingaanuku, and Christie for Roigard. As good a player as Mckenzie is I don’t think he’ll offer enough from the bench. If we’re chasing the game I see him running too many risky plays that see him isolated and turned over. And we all saw what Roigard brought against the Boks at Twickernam. But as I said, I suspect we’ll see the same team as against Ireland…

'What you live for': Boks beat England in World Cup EPIC to set up mouth-watering final against All Blacks

I agree AtB. I’m not sure they could trust the ref not to penalise them for sealing off, or holding onto the ball for that length of time. They trusted their defence to keep Ireland out knowing that Ireland would eventually lose the ball, or they could force the penalty. And they held better discipline on defence than they have for several years. I thought it was the right call at the time, and it paid off.

The Wrap: Why that was the All Blacks' greatest ever RWC win - but the road to fourth title is still a rough one

A couple of observations on Ireland’s game having rewatched the match. When they played us in 2022 they smashed us with forward runners all game, and then went wide, but this game they seemed to want to go wide very quickly in the phase play (until the last 5 minutes). But they couldn’t find a skinny defence nearly all night. The AB’s have been guilty of that for a few years – but i am surprised that this tactic has changed since 2022. Maybe an over belief in their ‘out the back’ plays? Also, Sexton is a legend, but his 38 year body was stuffed. When he missed that penalty and then that chip kick in the following play (something the BB can overdo) he should have been subbed off. I know, I know, you want your best players at the end, but he was cooked and the creativity had gone.

37 phases and OUT! Whitelock the hero as All Blacks win epic RWC QF to break Ireland's hearts again

The Whitelock steal was awesome – but the hit that he put on to set it up was just as good.

37 phases and OUT! Whitelock the hero as All Blacks win epic RWC QF to break Ireland's hearts again

With Faianuuku starting I think it makes sense to have ALB on the bench. Apart from the 6-2 split, who else are you going to have? Christie over Roigard is just dumb I think. I would have preferred Blackadder over Dalton – but that’s probably based on a desire that he do well, rather than too many facts… The other one I’m most concerned ab out is Williams. I like the guy, love his story and his attitude – but he’s been shown up against better scrums and I wouldn’t want him to have to come on too early. I think they’ll target him big time.

Thinking that we are not going to be able to grind this game out for a close win… we’ll need to try and blow them off the park early and hope we can hang on.

COMPLETE RWC QF teams: Dupont returns, Boks make HUGE halves call, Borthwick picks his No.10, Semi back for Fiji

I just hope this is true. Would be the best thing for Australian rugby all round. No payout. No Eddie. That’s a start, at least some clear air for the next phase. Yes, more needs to be done – but this is a start.

REPORT: Eddie Jones to quit Wallabies and join Japan as head coach

Yeah, I meant Scooter moving to BS.

Will the All Blacks' bench be the difference-maker against Ireland?

Agree with your bench BB – ALB is the ‘safe’ option, but we are not in safe territory anymore. I can’t see us having a sizeable lead that we just need to defend – if we’re in with a chance it will have to be close, and Fainga’anuku is more likely to get us there. Same too with Blackadder – can’t afford to have DP come on with 25 to go and be passive, it needs to be someone who will get stuck in from the first moment. Barring injuries – I’d like to see him replace Cane, have Whitelock to replace Frizell. Frizell doesn’t appear to ever get 80 minutes, not sure why that is. Maybe he just goes hard out from the start.

Will the All Blacks' bench be the difference-maker against Ireland?

Totally agree with you WEST – the ruck is where this game will be won or lost. In the two losses to Ireland in 2022 this was where we were soundly beaten, and it gave their backs broken defensive lines to wreck havoc with. Ireland were patient against South Africa – took them a while to get that dominance, but they got there eventually. What do you think about starting Taukeiaho and Roigard? I think we need some points of difference from what we have done previously and wonder if they could be it. I know Smith is an amazing playing with a speedy pass, but Roigard provides an additional running threat that will keep Ireland honest around the fringes, and he doesn’t shirk a tough tackle. Taukeiaho to give us just that little bit of extra go forward. And one more thing – Barrett and Rieko started the season by playing much closer together, but seem to have gone away from that. I want to see them go back to that – putting more doubt into the opposition minds, and less chance of Reek dying with the ball…

Has Fozzie been foxing? Ireland beware, the All Blacks could be about to reignite

I’ve been against this option in the past, but I’m starting to wonder if it makes the most sense, sadly. The money that it frees up might even start to pay for a proper “third tier” that is not a local club comp. Keep the Rebels and Force for that tier…

'How much does Australian rugby want to learn from the world?': Why you've got to stay tuned into World Cup

To me it seems that Ireland are playing a very similar style of game to the AB’s in their dominant period up until the WC final of 2015. Brutal up front in the collision, with skilled backs that know how to score tries from anywhere, mastered by a key #10 wiz. The AB’s lost very few test matches in that period, and knew how to win the close ones. And so Ireland are on their own winning streak – they know how to play winning rugby.

This current AB team is definitely not up to that level. That doesn’t mean that they can’t win – but I don’t think that they will be able to play like Ireland does(or the AB’s used to) and come away with the victory.

They are going to need to be a whole lot smarter than that. I do hope that Fozzie has been foxing – that they have been preparing for this game since the Wellington loss last year, and can unleash something different. The bench is going to be so important – Roigard, Blackadder, Faianunku and maybe McKenzie would be my key picks.

Going to be a great clash…

Forget the Ireland / Scotland Conspiracy Theory…

Fiji before the game: We’ll let you win, you allow us a bonus point…

Portugal: Right on.

Wallabies OUT of Rugby World Cup despite Fiji losing as Portugal pull off upset of the tournament

Yeah, I feel a bit the same. We want consistency of selections to build for the 1/4 finals. But… I also want to see Blackadder get a run, and Savea deserves a rest. I like Roigard starting, particularly with Mounga playing, get to build that combination a bit stronger. Reiko and B Barrett are two others that can do with the break. So the team probably makes sense, trying to juggle consistency, rest and exposure for a few others.

'Best when we're on edge': Cane back for All Blacks as Foster makes nine changes for Uruguay clash

I’m only speculating here but I wonder if its the case that Eddie doesn’t want to coach Australia next year, nor do RA want that – but both are looking at each other hoping that they will make the move. RA doesn’t want to because they probably will need to pay him out, and they are saving face but not having to admit they were wrong. And Eddie doesn’t want to because his ego won’t allow him to (he doesn’t want to admit that he failed). Maybe that’s why they both keep saying that they want Eddie to continue, but neither seem very enthusiastic about it.

RA 'committed' to Eddie despite 'bitterly disappointing' RWC campaign, in talks with NZR over northern threat

I’d like to see them run as close to full strength as possible, bar injuries, given that its been 3 weeks since the French game, and only 2 weeks until a likely quarter final against Ireland. Blackadder as the reserve loosie, Smith and Roigard (don’t mind who starts and who finishes. But agree on the back 3 make up, and Mac on the bench. Time to pull the pin on BB. But can’t see Foster doing that last one unfortunately.
