Would prefer to be playing a full Essendon team but don’t understand how only 1 other person has been forced into quarantine. I don’t know the exact COVID rules in Victoria but aren’t you forced into quarantine if you have been in a group where a person has tested positive? Aren’t they shutting schools down I there is a person there who has tested positive? I live in Brisbane so don’t know the Victorian rules but Qld Govt are now thinking they shouldn’t let Richmond In to play the Lions because of the increase in Victoria.

What does Essendon’s backline look like without Conor McKenna and co?

To be fair Pete, as I said it is only peoples opinions that are saying he might leave with no actual fact. Beams is totally different to Cripps with his mental issues so don’t compare the 2. Cripps has on several times told the media he is only interested in staying a Blue and help build team success. I am sure this will come up every year but until Cripps says anything different I take what he says to be true.

Paddy Cripps: Could Carlton's leading man be heading elsewhere?

Plenty of people have said that Cripps might leave which seems to be what most people then think he will, but does anyone listen to what Cripps says? Many times he has said he wants to stay at the Blues and help the team build success. So the only person who I believe is the guy himself not the ones who are just offering an opinion.

Paddy Cripps: Could Carlton's leading man be heading elsewhere?

Not Carlton, it is St Kilda.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 3

Our goal to goal line is operating very good with Jones, Weitering, Cripps, Levi & Harry. The addition of players like Docherty, Martin & Betts has helped us rebound out of defence better & keep the ball in our forward 50 longer. Harry still needs to improve a lot more as he seems to have a few quiet periods and his goal kicking needs to also improve. Pittonet has been a great addition and considering it would have been Phillips taking Kreuzer’s place we have done well.

There have been some good performances from some of the young players in the reserves games especially ones with good speed and who have been showing great pressure. At last we seem to have some good depth.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 3

I agree Shane. Carlton’s plan was to isolate Geelong’s defenders who work well together. Problems in the past for the Blues forward line has been that the tall forwards never kept a significant distance from each other and you would constantly see 2 of them flying against each other. Against the Cats they kept that distance and all took multiple marks inside 50 and made it very hard for your tall defenders who as you said are a great intercept marking defence.

Silly thing to do from Williamson but Selwood certainly helped the umpires decision.

'A bit of mayo on it': Dumb play from the Blues, or did Joel Selwood take a dive?

Agree with you Spruce. After Andrew Walker retired at the Blues they appointed him as a ‘Development & Integration’ coach, specialising in helping first year players in their transition to becoming professional footballers. After a few years he decided he wanted to return to his home town Echuca, which I think at some stage most indigenous footballers want to return to where they grew up & their families are.

Do black lives really matter in the AFL?

Another mention of teams taking their foot off the pedal because they might be 5 or 6 goals up at quarter time. With the way teams can kick 3 or 4 quick goals, if I was a coach of a team that took their foot off at quarter time I would be absolutely furious. So Melbourne took their foot off at quarter time & obviously couldn’t get it back on.

Carlton's first-quarter starts are hurting them

Clay, very surprised there is no mention of Verdun Howell who played for St Kilda. One of the best full-backs in the late 50’s & 60’s who tied the Brownlow with Bob Skilton in 1959 & played in St Kilda’s only premiership in 1966.

The AFL all-time great alphabet teams: Letter H

Yattuzzi, I played also and nowhere near AFL level. I remember winning games by big margins and one very specifically when we were 20 goals up at 3/4 time. Obviously when we came into the huddle we were all feeling pretty good but the coach quickly put a stop to it by saying if we lose the last quarter then our next training drill will go for an extra hour. We ended up winning by 27 goals and I don’t ever remember thinking about not taking the remainder of the game seriously. Now as I said it was only in a suburban league but I just cannot understand why any AFL coach would be prepared to be happy if his side loses any quarter of football.
I understand that they might change the style at some time but it wouldn’t be to let the opposition team back into the game. It just amazes me that supporters say after their side has a big lead early in the game but the other side comes back strongly later it is not because the opposition side outplayed them but it’s because their side took the foot off the pedal.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

Yattuzzi, that might happen towards the end of the game if you are 10 goals up but people are saying that Carlton became good because Richmond slowed up at 1/4 time. All teams would know that opposition sides could kick 2 or 3 quick goals and get back into the game.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

Sorry Richie, but I doubt any coach would allow his team to go into cruse control/momentum just because they believe they are in a winning position. Percentage can be a big factor in where you finish on the ladder. I also don’t believe players would ease up either knowing that if they don’t keep up the standard they could be playing reserves next week.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

Sorry Richie, I can’t believe any side that have a good first qtr. and a strong lead then go into cruise control. If I said Collingwood went into cruise control after dominating Richmond in the first quarter, what would you say?

The slow starts by Carlton has been a problem for the past couple of years.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

AD, not jumping to conclusions or critiquing, just offering an opinion. I couldn’t do an article like this week after week like you do so plaudits to ya.

AFL Power Rankings 2020: Round 2

Pretty funny hey Macca. The Port/Crows game was over at half-time but Port apparently didn’t hit the cruise button, but somehow he thinks Richmond did.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

AD, can’t agree with having Adelaide above Melbourne & Carlton. Adelaides % is 57.6 while Carlton’s is 84.3 & Melbournes is 80.2. I know Carlton are winless but in the 8 quarters they have won 5 & lost 3. Adelaide have won 2 quarters & lost 6.

AFL Power Rankings 2020: Round 2

Sachit, at the moment we have Weitering & Jones as our key defenders. Can’t see what McGovern could add to our defence unless the opposition are playing 3 tall forwards.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

If McGovern was actually having an influence during the games then he would be in the side but he isn’t doing much inside 50 & he seems to want to take ‘mark of the year’ every time he tries to mark, so for me he sit’s out. Levi is the better option as he can play ruck when needed. I actually believe if Jack Silvagni played yesterday instead of McGovern we would have won. Jack can take a mark, kick a goal and also apply pressure. If Charlie Curnow was fit then McGovern wouldn’t even be considered.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

Very frustrating for Blues supporters. Played 8 quarters and won 5, kicked 14 goals to 4 in the second half of the 2 games but remain winless. One would think if you are a Carlton supporter don’t bother watching the first half but turn the tv on after halftime.
Need to restructure the forward 50. Having 3 tall’s in there is not working, (a) because there have been very few inside 50 marks & (b) our kicks into the forward 50 have been very average. IMO only need Harry & Levi playing as our key forwards & four small/medium forwards who can crumb, kick goals and also put pressure on the opposition defence.

Your Bulldogs might beat us to it Matty.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

If the goal umpire only said he thought it was a point then that is why it was referred. If he said it was definitely a point maybe there would not have been a referral.

After 81 days, we get the ultimate letdown

Matto, wouldn’t ever disregard people’s comments because everyone has their own opinions. I just don’t understand why all these protests in countries all over the world only took place because of what happened in America, especially at a time when we are facing this COVID problem. If this happened to an indigenous person in Australia do you think there would be worldwide protests?

Tigers and Pies to kneel for Black Lives Matter movement

It looks like Pickett (Melbourne) could be ruled out of tomorrow’s game for breaching COVID rules.

AFL preview: Round 2

I would say Philp is a big chance. The emergencies that were named were Kennedy, Philp, Lang & Williamson. If we wanted extra pace I would go with Philp or Willo.
