NZR unilaterally blew up Super Rugby when Covid hit with a poorly conceived masterplan to launch a new competition which it would own and manage – a plan that ultimately wanted to reposition Australia as a subservient junior associate rather than trusted senior partner. – Gregor Paul Gregor Paul is one of New Zealand’s most respected rugby writers and columnists. False the Top 14 is largely self funded. Most clubs generate revenue from sponsorship at about 50%, then from broadcast rights close to 20% from the LNR, and around 10-20% from ticket and merchandise sales. Why is this not self funded?

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

JD you were educated on how NH teams rotate and rest their players, now you need an education on that false perception that you have on how billionaires are as you say incurring billions in loses. Start off buy looking at how many of the 30 pro French teams actually have billionaire owners, you will be surprised.

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

The deal with SANZAAR was concluded in Februry 2022 long before WR bought Rugbypass btw. One failed streaming service is the basis of NZ starting another is not a good sign.

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

It was called Rugbypass and for two years NZR failed miserably to sell to international viewers. Eventually they went on their knees to SANZAAR in early 2022 begging to have SRP included into the RC package at a giveaway price of nothing. What makes you think that another streaming service will do better.

Nothing to stop RA to not license it and White label as their product and sell direct to public in Oz if Stan/Foxtel go missing in terms of $$ for TV rights. .
.
It is called broadcast overheads. They can’t put GoPro cameras on the referees head and stream live and say it’s the same as having 13 cameras and crew at the match. The cost of the commentators alone will cripple RA.

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

That is what RA said before accepting a near 50 percent cut in broadcast revenue. So NZR are anticipating a big cut and want to sugarcoat it by hyping up some FTA nonsense that will simplify not pay the bills.

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

It’s called conference. Back in 2009 O’Neill was waxing lyrically about it trying to force the Rebels into SR to have his conference that would double as his domestic competition. Only SARU stood up against this mad idea as they were insistent on a 15 team single round robin competition featuring a 6th SA team. But what happened that traitor Tew sided with O’Neill. Eventually it was a corrupt kiwi arbitrator that ruled in favour of conference. So in 2011 Super Rugby died; and in 2012 the Reds despite not finishing in the top 8 were gifted a conference home playoff match.

Parochialism and denial runs rampant as Australia's rugby states are hunted by debt, one by one

They are not that great to be honest. Even with 9 players on 6N duty and with their two monster Springbok World Cup winning locks they are only in 11th place in the URC log.

Halfpenny danced the haka against the Munster B/C team, this only served to make them angry enough to put the sword to Penney’s weak team.

3rd XI ?

Does this writer know how to count? With close to seventy (70) of the top players drafted into the SA20 can one actually say that they are the 3rd XI

'We were completely outplayed': Zero surprises as Saffers' 3rd XI thrashed by New Zealand

You are the one talking nonsense about how 14 men were “disadvantaged” and you refuse to acknowledge that professional hit on Bongi that left the Boks without a hooker for close to 80 minutes leaving the scrum and maul totally de-powered. The Boks beat your overrated team with no power game … fact!

'Something we needed': Coles says ABs would not have made RWC final without Schmidt - and why Wallabies stand to benefit

When Felix Jones had his playing career suddenly cut short through injury he took the young 30 yer old man and spent 6 years teaching him everything that he knows as a coach and today Felix is regarded as probably the best young coach in the world.
Similarly Rassie has spent the last two years at least coaching Thor and will spend the 4 years preparing Thor to take over as Bok coach after 2027. It’s the kind of long term forward thinking that he does.

You refuse to acknowledge that NZ were handicapped by having a captain missing the top two inches of his brain. Cane and only Cane was to blame for his red card.

'Something we needed': Coles says ABs would not have made RWC final without Schmidt - and why Wallabies stand to benefit

I recall NZ walking out on a match minutes before it started but both teams managed to reschedule. No excuse for not rescheduling as the match can take place any time before 2027.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

Don’t be ignorant again. CSA asked to reschedule back in June 2023 but NZ cricket said no.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

Newsflash 13 man. The West Indies and every South Asian nation have blocked test cricket when their T20 leagues are being played. CSA just joined the party.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

As you have written CSA have already boldly decided not to send any test team to NZ ever again in summer. so as not to sully test cricket ever again. It is done. You should be pleased with this revelation 13 man it will save you from writing future articles like this one.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

You can’t understand that test cricket relies on teams touring other test nations to keep interest in test cricket and to keep the format alive. What ignorance is this? So if NZ does not send their test team on tours then test cricket is dead. What excuse is there for NZ not sending their test team to other nations in 11 to 15 years. NZ cricket killed test cricket. Case closed mr I don’t understand.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

Why have they not sent their test team to the West Indies in more than 13 years? Why have they not sent their test team to SA in 11 years? Answer the questions and don’t take the coward way out.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

Here is the problem with your assumption. CSA was always controlled by directors appointed from the provincial cricket unions. They were cricket people and so called red ball traditionalists, but they messed up big time to the point where they were forced to change the CSA constitution to allow for a majority on independent directors to take control of the board and the game.

The new board took power in 2022 comprising of directors from big companies only looking at the bottom line, and the bottom line is that test cricket bleeds money, so as a response these non test cricket loving people look to cut wasteful expenditure and redirect to other formats of the game that actually can turn a profit. I suspect that other professional cricket boards are doing the same responsible thing.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

I want to smoke the stuff that you are smoking. You want the IPL controlled ICC to kick out CSA for creating a competition for IPL teams. Keep smoking man!

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

Weak and feeble response. The facts hurt don’t they. NZ cricket is selfish and greedy and exposed for not willing to make a sacrifice for the good of test cricket. The cold hard fact is that CSA will likely never ever send any team to NZ during the CSA summer ever again.
BTW why have NZ have not even bothered to send their test team to the West Indies in more than 13 years? Why is that when India and England have just sent their test teams?

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

Don’t cry for NZ cricket they deserve no tears unless you can explain why they have not sent their test team to play against SA in 11 years. Their last visit in 2017 and nothing scheduled in this cycle ending in 2027. Why should CSA ever send their B team to NZ and take a financial hit when NZ does not want to take a financial hit to return the favour.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

You don’t see the big picture do you? CSA has just done what every other cricket nation has done and that is blocked out their summer for a T20 competition. Does Pakistan play any bilateral cricket when their T20 is played from February to March… No. Does Bangladesh play any bilateral cricket from January until February when their T20 is played … No. The ILT makes sure that Afghanistan does not play any bilateral cricket from January to February. All the top players from England and the West Indies winter by spending January to March playing in these so called “second rate” T20 competitions.. Why is that?

So CSA carved out a window for themselves to join the club. Going forward the months of a January to February no Proteas team will be playing bilateral cricket against any nation anywhere. That horse has bolted a long time ago and you only wake up now to what is going on. It’s like the sleepy NZ cricket board who will be waking up one day next month to realise that they are the only top 9 “test” nation without an international T20 competition leaving them out in the cold with no one to play bilateral cricket against from January until March because of the second rate T20 competitions eating their pudding.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

This is due to the fact that South African Cricket prioritised a domestic T20 competition, a second rate one at that

A second rate competition that in it’s first years drew a close to 15,000 people to the stadiums for all 33 matches. The second rate competition brings in revenue, the test series to NZ brings in zero, absolutely zero revenue.

This is great news for English rugby, and for the PRL. This coming off the news that CVC wants to bundle future URC and Prem deals as one package to broadcasters.
