At the time of writing, the most recent article the ABC online had published online relating to rugby was from Wednesday, May 27. I…
It’s funny 😂 😂 because its true.
Rugby league needs a new name but what can you call it to stand out in football’s confusingly crowded landscape of codes?
That’s exactly right London Panther. It won’t matter in a few years time anyway. Rugby League is only a step away from Oblivion at least as a viable professional sport of any real consequence is concerned. It just doesn’t know it yet.

Rugby is named after the school and town where it was established. Rugby League was founded in Huddersfield. There’s a suggestion.

I agree DP. I think that it should be called SPORTSBET. Its very existence as a main stream professional sport even in Australia is hanging by a thread and that thread is Gambling.

That’s a fair point Big Gordon. I can only surmise, so for what it is worth I can think of three possible reasons that V’Landy’s pulled the trigger and went to Vegas. One, as I alluded to before, because he is trying to court the gaming industry. Two, he understands Rugby Union’s growth trajectory in the U.S. They have well over 100000 registered players in the country now and are scheduled to host the Mens World cup in 2031 and the Women’s world cup two years after that. Rugby League made a big thing out of the games on the weekend being televised by Fox sports in the US but the USA Rugby Union just inked a deal to televise not one but 18 weeks of their very own professional and national MRL competition on Fox Sports so I think perhaps V’landy’s see’s value in following that tail wind. If he doesn’t he should and finally as mentioned previously and the point is not to be underestimated, he needs to be seen to be growing the game. As with all sports there is constant pressure from stakeholders to grow the game and what better way to APPEAR to be growing the game than showcasing Rugby League in what at first glance would appear to be one of the worlds most lucrative markets but I fear in this instance that the NRL’s eyes are bigger than its stomach.
Viva Las V'landys: Vegas party has started for the NRL but it is hard to tell if there's an American flavour ... yet
This Vegas thing is window dressing to give the appearance of growing the game outside of the two main eastern seaboard markets of NSW and Qld. Truth of the matter is there is little to no surplus funds at NRL headquarters to finance development programmes that would be an essential follow up to exhibitions of this sort to consolidate whatever slight impact that it may have had. Any cursory knowledge of the U.S sporting landscape will tell you that it is a notoriously hard nut to crack. People could be forgiven for forgetting that the ARL, as it was then called took State of Origin to the States in the 1980’s. Blink and you would have missed it. For years Football and Rugby Union have been trying to break into the US Sporting landscape. Both with vastly greater resources and presence in the States than Rugby League has or is ever likely to have. That’s what I know. Rugby League is sucking at the teat of the Gambling Industry and the regulators in Australia are coming after them and they are looking at squeezing more gambling dollars before the curtain is drawn across that revenue stream as well. That too I know. Talk about a last gasp act of desperation.

I’m glad you qualified your comment by referencing or confining your point to Rugby in Australia. To compare the two codes growth trajectory globally would just be embarrassing and frankly a bit like comparing apples and oranges. 😁 Cheers, Hope you enjoyed the game.

The whole thing is a bit of a joke. I am fairly certain that this is a kind of exhibition event to attract the gaming industry which is increasingly under political pressure to regulate in Australia but I’d love for someone to explain to me how exactly or how this novelty is of long term benefit to Rugby League. Surely, the NRL are not so naive as to think it is going to translate into any real long term growth for the game.

“The two-time World Cup winner added that Australia’s Super Rugby franchises had to accept the code was broke and urgent action was required to get the game back on track.” Does he mean get the game back on track or is that code for get the Wallabys back on track because they are not one of the same. The Rugby elites in this country just don’t get it. Making the Wallaby’s great again won’t make Rugby great again in Australia. It is putting a bandaid over a festering wound. Their focus should be on the community game not a handful of highly paid mercenaries.
'Our talent is spread too thin': Ex-Wallabies captain urges Rugby Australia to cut Super teams
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone.????
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
So sorry Champ, Did you want me to compare it to the other top 30 Rugby Nations ? Australia is the only nation on that list where Rugby League is a the stronger of the the two codes. Samuel Johnson understood that “Patriotism is the last refuge of the the scoundrel.” I am sure that you are not one of those types but hey, It’s a big world out there Champ. I’d suggest you explore it sometime only I am concerned that you will get lost in it. Judging from your reply you seem a little lost already in a world of your own.
10 reasons league and union should merge to become One Rugby - and give AFL nightmares
Well that doesn’t surprise me ????. I wonder how many games Rupert has watched.

and they are glad they did. Best thing the WORLD CHAMPS did was to leave Super Rugby. Wise move, I just wish NZR would kick Australia out as well because we are over it.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
I 25th that proposal. Let’s get out of Super Rugby
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Are you joking ? Why don’t you bring China and India into the competition whilst you are at it Jacko. Scary is about right. All the support for Super Rugby has been scared off already.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Exactly, they are only competing with themselves anyway. When will the penny drop. Super Rugby is dead. Let’s go domestic then Jacko can watch all the New Zealand Rugby he wants and well…. I can watch what I want, currently watching the Japanese Rugby and thoroughly enjoying it, at least until the Shute shield comes along. It’s not the same standard but at least it’s competitive and you don’t know who is going to win more often than not until the last minute. Haven’t been able to say that about Super Rugby for years.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
I agree. Please kill off Super Rugby. It’s lost in the Australian media landscape. Go Domestic with a return to the old school Qld VS NSW series just prior to the test matches. A limited state series would attract media attention. That is all that Australian Rugby can sustain. There is simply not the support in the media and with audiences and limited revenue for much else.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Too funny???? – When are Rugby people in Australia ever going to learn. They are not going to make rugby GREAT AGAIN by borrowing other peoples teams. This competition has more holes in it than swiss cheese and is about as stinky as Blue cheese. What can I say, It’s Cheesy. What about the Moscow Bears ….. does anyone remember them. Let’s bring them in as well.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
I agree Kingmaker. I would love to see the Jaguares but I think they are clutching at straws. Ever since Turnbull talked of taking the game professional as far back as the late 1980’s people in Australia have talked the big talk. Back then there was talk of bringing a team in from North America. It’s a fantasy. Their eyes are bigger than their stomachs. There simply isn’t the stomach for it. Let’s go back to basics.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Where did you hear that ?
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Why would they. Japan have a viable commercially appealing tournament of their own. Why would they wish to white ant that. Your logic makes no sense. Of course Tonga and Samoa and Fiji want to be a part of Super Rugby. What alternative do they have ? I would love to see the Jaguares. They would probably be the only matches I would want to watch but to me talk of their return smacks of desperation. Their home is in America. It’s one thing for their players to find greener pastures independently overseas and another to expect a whole squad of Rugby players to be globetrotting half way around the world for half the year only to play before a half empty stadium.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Maybe with all that Blue Sky thinking at Super Rugby and that growing bank balance maybe they might invest in their own planes. They talk the big talk at Super Rugby. I wondered what the Super in Super Rugby stood for. I now know it stands for “Super” Stupid.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
I am passionate about Argentinian Rugby and wish them all the best but I feel deeply concerned for Argentina if they were to join again Super Rugby. Rugby is growing nicely in Argentina. I would hate to think what would happen if they were
to be saddled into this dead horse of a tournament.
'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over
Well said Jeznez. We want a WELL BALANCED domestic competition. Super Rugby does not give us that, and we shouldn’t be paying top dollar for anyone. If they are good enough to get a bumper contract overseas let them go. RA’s duty is to ALL Australian stakeholders and not just a handful of headline grabbing rugby league recruits.
Super Round is a celebration of rugby - that's why it should have never been held in Melbourne
Obviously. Thought you were going to tell me they were invented in China.
