cs is a former No. 8 who remembers playing in a forward pack as the most (legal) fun he's ever had. These days he spends a fair share of his professional time crunching very hard numbers.

A big life in sport, and a Tahs fan if I recall correctly. RIP

RIP, David Lord: Australian sports journalism icon was 'always thoughtful and thought-provoking'

I dare say that Phil’s express coaching aim is looking a tad tenuous:

“I genuinely believe our competitive advantage in sport is being Australian, so we need to ensure there’s a really strong Australian flavour within the coaching structure. Whether that includes the head coach or not is less relevant, it’s around the culture installed across the broader coaching group. We’re really open-minded around whether the coach is an Australian or a foreigner, as long as the broader coaching environment is very Australian.”

Surely there will be a million or so conversations in RA on this issue by then?

Every present imagines itself more complex than the past, with debatable certainty..

For a reliably good laugh, I’d recommend listening to league coverage on the TV with the picture totally black.

Top shelf discussion. Like the old days.

Makes me wonder if speeding up the game matters. Back in the day, I enjoyed my rugby just as much, if not more, blessedly innocent of the knowledge that, one day in the future, the game would be faster. Is that what all the storm and stress of the recent decades finally comes down to? Producing something we didn’t know was missing?

Hmm, I feel I should but will rashly admit to not understanding mj.

What would we do without coaches to sack?

The Latu story always hurts.

Rugby must come to grips that players now value dollars over national service, they may not say so but always look what they do not what they say.

‘now’? Perhaps an unfair slur. Compared to ‘then’, there are ‘now’ many more possible dollars, not necessarily weaker national sentiment.

The peak rolling maul moment seems to have passed, not only in the Brumbies. Have the laws been changed, are they being reffed differently, or is it just the natural cycle of teams becoming much more skilled in defending against them?

The Quarters! I couldn’t say how strong and wide they were, but can testify to the ripples of interest that followed the quarters in my circles. Those two games certainly turned the heads of many Oz sports fans at large. ‘Electrified’ to be sure, if the Wallabies could produce rugby drama on that scale.

Guess that tends to underline how cosmopolitan we are, which kinda underlines your larger points.

It’s not for me to establish a clear regional identity. I can cope. It’s for those who complain about the weirdness of the comp and the low patronage to figure it out so Joe and Jill Punter will have some idea, apart from Australian provinces vs five blank NZ teams.

Love your touch Ben.

It’s the old story. If you can’t buy a Volkswagen you might as well not have a Rolls Royce.

Enough of realistic expectations, let's get excited about future Wallabies

Can’t believe you’ve only been here twice Harry. It wasn’t til I noticed someone in the crowd picking on you for being a South African that I realised you weren’t an Australian. Please tell me that at least one visit was extended.

I hate this, if it’s true. A test series is the best way to sort out the best teams. I hate it so much, I’m going to do a Trumpy and just pretend it’s fake news.

This is at least partly due to the fact that we only play New Zealand, i.e., only five different NZ teams. There is no other identity to hold onto. The New Zealand ‘Blues’ for godsakes? How much more invisible can a regional identity become?

Yeah, I know most people on the site know where the NZ super teams come from; yeah, I know potential fans can google and identify geographic divisions and try to remember them and their narratives in their own minds; yeah, I also know about the incongruence with NZ’s national comp. etc.

However valid the excuses, it doesn’t change the fundamental absence of regional NZ super identities (at least from an Australian perspective) and the ensuing weak traction in encouraging folks to discriminate between the five teams.

Shouldn’t the full stop come before ‘drug’?

Agree Harry, subject to an explicit preference for domestically based players, everything being more or less equal. In other words, only stars need apply. Perhapsers better stay home if they wannabe a Wallaby.

Agree, although I think ‘calm’ or ‘composed’ or self-possessed’ would serve just fine. What is the origin of ‘iceman’ in this context? Wiki tells me the term refers to an infamous killer and a marvel hero?

Hey Geoff, apropos something different, caught the Tedeschi Trucks Band on their tour. I remember you’re a bit of a fan. All I can say is: fabulous.

Sill feeling it! Cheers,

Gotta find some interest somewhere, in a bye week for the Mighty Tahs,

All right for Reds aficionados. Tate and Fraser are the main two draw cards for us southerners.
