I would actually suggest over here in NZ they actually advertise Super more than NPC Brendan. Funny thing is I can go to golf club, and a lot there are what I call casual fans ( just watch on tv etc and not attend games), most will talk about who Taranaki have got or how they went during NPC, than will discuss same with Super. Go figure huh?

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

Probably would up to a point JD, but I and a lot of us rugby people wouldn’t over here.

Well if the comp went longer it would be without test players and there would still be a problem. I don’t think anyone could afford to be in a comp where they had to cover enough players to be without test players at time of coming into finals. We are buggered with the size of the countires etc.

I would suggest that broadcasters have always had huge say in what or how comp is run? Didn’t Stan hold off signing up to rugby until they knew NZ and Aus were in agreement on super rugby? And Sky tv have said after new tv deal comes they will be probably wanting to change the amount of live tv of NPC and FPC as production cost are just so high. They will have more delayed and maybe less productions(cameras?) at some of the games. Has always been case, we used to comment that games of NRC were kicked off when TV told them it was right time etc. And why do we all think that the games are all at night? It’s not to get crowds and especially families in, pro rugby unfortunately meant bowing to tv paymasters!

Yeah?? Mind you it seems right, with all due respect to Force fans, might as well get it another past it player to join the rest in collecting their pension?

Geez I hope this has legs!! As a kiwi from this side of the ditch, I have no idea of problems of getting to stadium etc if it is difficult. But I just admit to being a rugby man, and don’t want any club anywhere to fold for economic reasons. Besides they look like they building a team that will be competitive there!

PE backed consortium 'in final stages' to save Melbourne Rebels with $30m injection and link with A-League club

Morning Geoff, good to get up and have a read of column as usual on a Monday. I must admit to being one who doesn’t quite understand the situation with Rebels and not just because I live in NZ. Seems some things get released/said to media that perhaps paint one side or other as problem, so I just wait and hope they get it sorted, I take no pleasure in any club in world suffering for financial reasons. On games, as a Canes man ,I was and am stoked with how they going, and gutted about Roigard’s injury. But they are a fun team to support always, and this year are building my hopes up even more. For all the brilliance in backline, that forward pack is where the biggest improvement is, loosies, who do you leave out etc, . I stayed up and the watched Reds Brumbies, and what a match that was too, loved it, great intensity and plenty of skill shown. All in all (apart form the RA/Rebels schmozzle) it’s a good time (well for always is) to be a rugby man!!

The Wrap: Good news and bad news for Rugby Australia as Brumbies and Rebels win local derbies

Well being in NZ, I watched the game until halftime, then being an old bugger went to bed. Was amazed when I got up this morning to hear the Tahs lost, after seeing Rebels capitulation against my Canes last week. What the hell is going wrong with Tahs?? They look to have reasonable line up etc.

'Something's not working': Tahs' Good Friday turns into a nightmare as Rebels recruit Daugunu seals upset win

Fairly hard to argue with a lot of points pointed out isn’t it? While I thought Hamish spoke out of turn an awful lot, I always wondered why board allowed it and didn’t rein him in a bit. So were complicit in what was being done/said.

'Previous chairman can not be a scapegoat': First salvo fired in bid to spill the Rugby Australia board

While understanding and agreeing with a lot of your article Ben, if you stop and think , it shows why we have to be careful pulling apart some parts of game. Maul is a very good point (not a huge fan of them either), but make them illegal and you just open up to your next point, defensive walls, the forwards not required in mauls etc will jsut clog up midfield defence etc. Even the scrum, if you have a dominant scrum and want to get rightfully rewarded for it, etc it’s quite hard if the opposition bores in etc. So you get penalties. I know (I’m coming up tp 70) when I played we and all teams did whatever they could get away with to negate other team’s strength. I couldn’t jump (was a lock) in a lineout using inside arm as that was being used to stop opposition holding me down, stop him jumping off my shoulder, or for me to jump of his etc. So it’s never easy as players will try to use laws etc to their own advantage . It’s a fact of life .

WR's mooted law changes are great - but show there's a hell of a lot wrong with rugby in 2024, and that sucks

Careful what you wish for though. He goes to Leinster he just may decide to make himself available for Tonga at WC? He could be worth more money to club if said that as he wouldn’t need a break for tests until he became eligible fot Tonga! But really it would do him good to go over, learn to be a proper prop?

'Such an emotional guy': Why RA should let their biggest star leave for the sake of the Wallabies

Yep Phil, as a couple have mentioned he from Holland. Got all keen on rugby and came to NZ when he was 16. He apparently found the game as nipper, and loved it. Was involved with a kids training thing that NZ 7s team took, and got keen on idea of trying the game in NZ. Some contacts made arrangements, he came to NZ at 16 (for 6 months or so), was already a big bugger and got in system. He caught my eye a few years ago, and just immediately thought/guessed he had a big future. Has an incredible workrate, funnily enough like young Anton Segner(wrokrate) at Blues from Germany on same kind of thing, came to NZ for a season to try things and been here since. Just great stories etc.

Razor's pursuit of 'hard bastard' Sam Whitelock reveals the ugly truth about the modern All Blacks

Actually JD the other one who reminds me of a young Sam W, is young Fabian Holland, when he becomes eligible at end of year, I can see him having a career similar to Sam’s, and in him and Lord we could very well have next SW/BBBR type locking set up.

Razor's pursuit of 'hard bastard' Sam Whitelock reveals the ugly truth about the modern All Blacks

Yep Oliver said that in his book JD, and I was pleased me to see it. Some players genuinely want more from game tham money.

Not arguing he was good FF, just saying he could of been great with all the skills, or maybe in right position. I used to actually laugh when commentator suggested he play at centre. He was a bloody good finisher etc, but do genuinely think he could of been a great.

Five things we learned: Schmidt's selection headache, Carter's a No.12 wildcard, and $1m Thor must step up

I think you will find it’s not about skewing the rules on overseas players, whipers around the place are that Sam W not finding the French experience what he hoping and wondering if he would take up second year option of contract. Some people just aren’t into the overseas thing! I know Anton Oliver said he knew after first game in France he wouldn’t stay a second year, he said in dressing room he realised that he was there playing for money and nothing else, as he said when he finished playing for the ABs the music died! I have no problems with Razor talking to him if he looking at coming back, another year or 2 would be good. I would be real pleased actually as I want AB tests to matter between WCs and not just load up with youngsters.

Kiwi, was at Palmerston on Friday, and Tupou seriously spent most of the half he was on walking around in middle of the field! I have noticed it on TV, but geez looks worse at field, and breaks into a trot now and then , and genuinely think he actually ‘ran’ as such 3 times!

Five things we learned: Schmidt's selection headache, Carter's a No.12 wildcard, and $1m Thor must step up

Boy do you and I agree on that Rugbytry, and I always said he should of been a right wing as he couldn’t pass of his left hand!

Ray, for the same reason every coach goes and does a scout of teams they are playing, to see how or what players they are likely to be playing against and what strengths and weaknesses they can expoit or counter. I recall Jase Ryan talking how he went to 6Ns befroe last years WC (in our off season) and came back with a interesting takes on how Irish were setting up mauls from lineout etc. at highest level it’s not just how your own team plays but how opposition plays as well.

The Wrap: Wallaby's brain fade that cost the Tahs, con job worthy of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

I agree JD, I not sure standard has dropped by any means, but more we getting more rugby as it should be played. For all anyone talks about clinical rugby etc, that is only ever in parts, really good rugby to me is usually chaos, and teams that handle the chaos best win! Was at Palmerston on Friday, and never thought there was a lesser standard, rather the Canes were winning real fast breakdown ball, and Rebels were in chaos trying to set defence. That is usually how good games are played etc.

Frankly I can assure you if the broadcasters wanted a domestic comp, RA would have it! I not sure if you remember when RA signed with Stan, they wouldn’t actually do it until they knew that RA and NZR has signed off on super. Much as I love your optimism, you would need a tv deal of at least another $20-30 mill to pay another 2-3 teams from Aus, and that very least, probably a lot more. And with Rebels going broke and probably gone even with 3 new teams it only leaves a 7 team comp, of questionable quality.

And idiotic posters, who really don’t know a lot pretend they know better . What a conundrum huh? Do we take notice of the ‘experts’ online, or the ones who actually know the laws and how they meant to be judicated?

Which sounds great, if you come up with the extra money to pay all these extra players!

The Rebels didn’t so much roll up sleeves as I got impression, they followed coaches instructions to slow game down come what may. They did the Sprinbaoks proud I thought at times. Was at game, and they looked completely worn out by haftime (I thought they were gone after 15 mins). Wasn’t one Rebels player I would of swapped for a Canes player last night. And that was with 13 changes for Canes in starting line up!
