Hey mate, appreciate the sentiment of the article and maybe it is the right solution for Australia – but it does seem a tad short sighted. Here in Germany not only are there ads for alcohol advertising, but they’re everywhere. Full strength beers are served at games and you’re allowed to walk down the street with a beer. Instead of tackling drinking, they tackle dickheads – which should be the target here in Aust.

It’s good to see the A-League have more rusted on support, with perhaps more casual supporters tuning in to the Prem.
That said, if Liverpool do mount a title challenge this year, I expect the bandwagon to roar through the wee hours of the morning.

Van Dijk was damn expensive but his influence has already been huge. Liverpool’s defence looks far better since he arrived, and he’s made the rest of the side play better – his partnership with Karius has been the main reason for the German grabbing the goalkeeping slot with both hands, which saves them money in the summer as they don’t need to find a new keeper now.

Don’t dodgy the stats mate, it’s three premierships and four grand finals in 20 years! Why cut off at 17? Why not make it 30 years, where they’ve won six premierships from seven appearances – with three of those coming with minimal salary cap relevance.
The Broncos are already at an advantage, it would be foolish to abandon equalisation. Even American sports get that right!

Tim I normally love your work but I gotta say this is well wide of the mark. As a Cairns kid who loves my league but now lives in Europe, I long for the days of a competitive league. We are incredibly lucky to have a league where realistically eight or so teams can win each year.
In the 20-year history of the NRL, we’ve had 12 premiers, with only four winning more than one. Only four teams have missed out of 16.
By all means introduce rewards for growing talent – all of the Storm’s greats have been homegrown, maybe excluding Crocker – but open slather will not end well.
Wealthy clubs are at an advantage already.
We might knock the NRL and with good reason, but this is something they’ve clearly got right.

There are great derbies in and around the Ruhrpott for sure, but the last-round finishes of the early 00s in the Bundesliga haven’t been seen for a few years.
Leverkusen could surprise a few people this year, and having a three way race for the title would be great for the Bundesliga internationally.
Domestically, Bayern could win the next 10 titles and the stadiums would still be sold out, such is the fan connection. But for international exposure, the thing needs to be more competitive.

They’ll miss Mkhitaryan for sure, although he only really had one great season in black and yellow. Some of the young guys – along with older heads like Gotze and Schurrle – will be great. Bayern could have some difficulties adjusting to their new coach’s style of play so I’d say the race is open.
But for a couple of late losses last year when the Bundesliga was already decided, Dortmund had the third best record in Europe. If they can keep that form going…then hey!

Plenty of frustration directed at the refs, which is understandable, but in the end it was Australia’s poor first half – where they were down by 12 at some stages – which left them with too much ground to cover.
Unlike Australia, the second half of the tournament has been great for Spain, who just made it into the knockouts with a win over Argentina after having lost their first two games. They have now been on the podium every one of the past three games.

Australia will be disappointed at the result, but should direct their emotion towards fixing their first half performance. They were trailing by 12 points at one stage, and while they made it up to lead late in the game – and with 10 seconds to go! – quality teams like Spain should not be given 12 point starts.
Andrew Bogut should have provided more as apparently Australia’s best, although he appeared to be carrying an injury. He only played 14 minutes all up, fouling out just after half-time.
A bronze would have been a great foundation for the future, but 2020 looks particularly bright for the Aussies. Imagine this team, probably sans Bogut, with Simmons, Maker and Exum jockeying for positions.

The foul call on Mills could have gone either way – Mills was falling at the time and began to celebrate once the ball went out of bounds – but the referee judged that he impeded Rodriguez.
Australia’s bridesmaid status in the men’s Olympic basketball continues, with four fourth-place finishes and no medals.
For Spain, it was a bronze to add to their two silvers from the previous two matches, ending the Gasol era in style.
The two best in the match were certainly the two San Antonio Spurs, with Gasol and Mills finishing with 31 and 30 respectively.

Well Australia’s heart was questioned after the loss to Serbia, but you couldn’t question their heart there. They showed desperation and skill, with Patty Mills shining for the Aussies.
In the end, it was Spain’s clutch free throw shooting – their last four points were from frees with the clock winding down – which brought them the bronze. Australia had possession with five seconds left, but couldn’t compose themselves enough to have a shot.
