Unabashed Carlton fan with the occasional ability for objectivity. Intuitive feel for slow left arm bowling talent.

Thanks Ben, this was a great read.

This is why Test cricket is played

Talking up a young player on the back of one game – not a bit hypocritical?

Nine quick takes from AFL Round 17

Me too Original Buzz. I was already expecting a smashing from my Port mates, could get ugly if Cripps and Kreuzer are out. I’d say Kerridge in for Cripps – purely for physical presence around the ball. Phillips for Kreuzer – but this seems a bit rushed. Polson for SPS. We could lose by a fair bit.

Macca that was against a bunch of kids. He has looked a long way off AFL level whenever he has played. I’d say his card is close to marked.

Steady on Bugaluggs (great name BTW as I can say that without being condescending). As a Carlton fan I loved Eddie and I still love watching him play. As a small forward he will always be better in a stronger team but he is not the sort of player who just relies on teammates. He creates many chances for himself and provides opportunities for others. I also don’t buy the mercenary bit. Eddie started as a rookie and through hard work and skill has forged a fantastic career. He is from South Australia and was being offered more money and contract length to return home – I have no problem with that. He is also a great mentor and leader for many young indigenous players. He strikes me as a genuinely lovely guy.

Don this article was about Carlton chances. I think there is one serious chance – Marchbank. I went and checked Sportsbet Market and guess what – Powell-Pepper is favourite, Phillips second and Marchbank third. I can’t be that crazy then. Also, Petrevski-Seton is on the next line of betting with McGrath. Logue is way back at $51 – equal with McKay and Silvagni and Curnow is ahead of them.

Is it Carlton’s year to have a rising star winner?

Good question. If you are going to open with a spinner why wouldn’t it be the guy who got 5 for in the 1st innings and it’s agreed is well suited to this pitch.

Still got SoK in with a chance of replacing Lyon Ronan? Is it now down to the 2nd innings of this test.

It was Smith – hilarious.

Lyon inspires Australia at Dharamsala

That’s my point, O’Keefe excels on pitches where two spinners are generally played. If you only need one – as it is pace friendly, Lyon will be the option.

Now Lyon bowling short – time for the quicks.

I think they should take the new ball with Cummins and keep Lyon on. O’Keefe is leaking too many runs and doesn’t look too threatening.

O’Keefe has bowled well but I think Lyon has shown again that he is at another level. I’ve watched the last 3 hours of play and he has just been brilliant whereas O’Keefe has been steady without getting the same spin or bounce or variation. Also today O’Keefe hasn’t been as accurate. I think he is a great second spin option when needed but I still don’t understand the calls to replace Lyon as our number one spinner.

He’s heard it a million times and he just keeps performing.

Assuming a spinner is played I can’t see Lyon missing out in Brisbane. He is just so well suited to that pitch.and has a great record there.
Agree 100% on Khawaja. I would play Maxwell over Marsh (agree Marsh has a poor record against pace) but it may come down to performance in this test.

Wade, Marsh, Lyon and Maxwell playing for spots at Dharamsala

Lyon has a fantastic record at the Gabba – it woud be hard to leave him out of the 1st test based on past performances.
Having said that if all 4 quicks are fit and in form it would be very hard to decide who misses out. Starc, Cummins and Pattenson also make for a very long batting line up as they are all really no.8’s.

Glenn Maxwell at six could help destroy England

I also feel for you when Australia do well I know it hurts you so much.

Plucky Australia banish demons of 2016

Well played Cam

The Roar’s 2017 AFL top 50 players: 20-11

Top stuff Ken and Ryan. On the evidence available (I do my best not to watch West Coast games as this would only blur the issue) Carlton won.

Kick to Kick: Who won the Chris Judd trade?

True on the gelling together – it’s more the combination of players coming together for the first time, half with a new coach and the fact the new players are likely to be a bit rusty – both physically and game ready. All up it would be amazing to see them make finals. I’m also not sure they have the talent across the board to this – but that’s just a different opinion on the playing group.

See the Bombers fly up, to finals and beyond

Essendon basically have to form a new team two years in a row. THe players suspended last year have not played under Worsfold and it will take a while to gel. I also think they are likely to suffer more soft tissue injuries due to their time away from competition. Lastly, they could be 1/2 a step off the pace – ok if one or two coming back – but this could be quite significant when half the team are returning.
All this says to me they are highly unlikely to make the finals. I’d say 13-16.

See the Bombers fly up, to finals and beyond

I do agree on the frees in H&A versus finals – although I think it is only partially relevant to Tim’s argument as he has made a couple of references to GFs the main premise seems to be points for throughout the H&A.

That’s a very good point Glenn. Performance needs to be looked at in context. In the context of these matches and pitches the batting has stood up quite well. The momentum swing in this match was day three – Australia’s tail failed and then the bowling at the start of the Indian innings was ordinary. In addition, the Pujara/Rahane partnership swung the match. This was not a failing of the top order.

Australia's number six conundrum continues

Welcome to the Roar Tim – and bringing up the 1970 GF is great for us long suffering Blues supporters!
I can see how paying more infringements helped to open the game and lead to more scoring in past seasons. I see a few counter arguments for the current game. One is that defence these days has a strong focus on small things like manning the mark which would reduce a players ability to quickly play on from a free kick. The second is that team defence like rolling zones means that the opposition is much quicker at resetting and making it difficult for successful attacks from a stop play and the third is the increased professionalism of umpiring (training, video analysis, etc) means they tend to only pay free kicks that are there. This is amplified by the focus of TV coverage on bad decisions. They are quickly replayed and reviewed and most times what looked like a missed free kick to the naked eye was actually not a free kick (e.g. Players actually get a fist to a ball that looks like it just spilled from a tackle or in the back/high tackles are actually legal). Most scoring these days seems to come from turnovers where the opposition can’t set up their defensive structure quick enough.

Nice try Paul we thought the same at Carlton but he is clearly not above avg. None of the players Josh mentioned are above avg.

Get the spoon ready for Carlton, they're forked
