The rebuild of the rebuild of the original rebuild which comes after Dean Bailey’s renovation

Infuriating and irrelevant, Melbourne push their fans to the edge

Hey Don,

I wrote that Petracca had tried all game, I agree that he did a lot to lift Melbourne.

Infuriating and irrelevant, Melbourne push their fans to the edge

Totally agree. The Joel Smith story has been under-reported because even to a novice, playing an injured player in JLT seems like poor management. Burgess becomes key to get Smith and VandenBerg back to form but add in a Karl Amon, Ed Langdon, Noah Anderson trifecta that would give Melbourne’s list greater balance. It’s an interesting few months ahead.

Can the Melbourne Football Club rebound from 2019?

Haha I wanted to roll out a ‘deesgrace’ in there but resisted the urge.

Can the Melbourne Football Club rebound from 2019?

I know I am a bit biased but with Melbourne, this season isn’t a reflection of their capabilities but it is a reflection of their culture and there isn’t anything which suggests they can turn it back around or that they’ve learnt or are willing to learn from their mistakes and I think that is quite an indictment.

Can the Melbourne Football Club rebound from 2019?

If we used similar logic, Michael Neser should be in line to bat 6 for Australia. Has a first-class top score of 77, averaging 23 and List-A hundred. It shouldn’t happen but that seems to be the thing we’re going for here.

The issue seems to be with picking players averaging mid-30’s in shield cricket, who aren’t in amazing form and watching them look out of place at the higher level.

The solution to Australian cricket's woes

Great piece Paul! Summed up what I think a lot of us think about NK

The paradox of Nick Kyrgios

If you can’t see the difference between displaying an Italian flag or swastika, you may want to take a long break as well.

Why I need to take a break from football

Yeah Usman is a strange one, you can only think maybe something behind the scenes is going on because whenever you see him play shorter form cricket he does well, especially for the Sydney Thunder. Maybe it’s because he prefers opening and Australia already has Finch and Warner.
To be honest, he completely slipped my mind when writing this piece, great call though.
I think Burns after his Big Bash form would’ve been so close to featuring in the International T20’s but unfortunately he tore his abductor or something.
Like both those calls.

Australia needs a tweak and NSW may offer the solution

I think Hughes may not be better but he is definitely equal to them, although I agree with you Lynn and co are quality players.

Hughes has a record which out performs Short and Turner over a similar time frame and while Short and Turner have both had good summers with the bat and look destined for bigger things, Hughes has performed equally well in the Matador Cup although he was shaded in the Big Bash.
Lynn is better when he is fully fit but at the moment he cannot seem to stay on the park, but I’d agree, when he is fit he’d be ahead of Hughes.

Maxwell always has people talking about his X-factor and limitless potential, at Sheffield Shield level he has performed to an elite level. At international level in an ODI he averages 31 over 80 games, he’s been tried and tested but he simply doesn’t deliver when he’s there.

Australia needs a tweak and NSW may offer the solution

I know its traditionally a rivalry, I just think in the Mark Neeld era and when Melbourne was utterly terrible it lost some of its gloss and anticipation especially with Collingwood being dominant during some of those times.

Nowadays Queens Birthday is a game I genuinely look forward too and it’s returning to being the rivalry it once was, hence ‘growing’.

How to schedule Round 1, 2018

Yeah the AFL definitely wouldn’t do it for commercial reasons I just think personally, 4 games on a Saturday is a bit much.

I can see Hawks and Brisbane, the Hodge angle and all plus since Dangerfield’s defection the Adelaide v Geelong games seem to draw well.

GMHBA Stadium doesn’t roll off the tongue.

How to schedule Round 1, 2018

Yeah I’ve been noticing this recently. Amazing the amount of PSG supporters who now exist after the transfer window.

Is it ever okay to change teams?

Actually, AFC Wimbledon was part of the reason for this article, I watched a news piece on their rise, very interesting story.

Yeah some very good points there Josh

Is it ever okay to change teams?

Thanks Rick

Is it ever okay to change teams?

That’s what I thought, I was trying to be the devil’s advocate but there were very few reasons I could come up with for changing teams

Is it ever okay to change teams?

Built for the now with regards to the squad demographic and the higher age profile in comparison to other seasons. Embarking on a new era because possibly this squad make-up will force Brisbane to play a different style of game to seasons last as well as change formation.

Brisbane Roar are built for the now and embarking on a new era

I think with the ball-playing options we have in midfield, a narrow diamond similar to what Swansea City used at times in the last EPL season could work. It compacts our midfield but would suit the likes of Holman and McKay, they could play in their natural positions. You can also go for a wide diamond and use the likes of Shannon Brady who is a good prospect, if they wanted to call him up.

Brisbane Roar are built for the now and embarking on a new era

I think there’s enough talent within Brisbane’s squad to put them around the mark for a run deep into finals come the end of the season. They’ve had some major losses especially in MacLaren, but they seem to have compensated fairly well and given the salary cap, every team has to be creative with their signings and everyone takes risks to some extent.

It’ll be interesting to see if it comes off for them.

Fahid Ben Khalfallah and Holman do give Aloisi of long range shooting which gives Brisbane options and some unpredictability. It’ll be interesting to see where Aloisi goes next because the name Guillermo Torres appeared on a team sheet during preseason, so maybe he’ll get a visa spot?

I think a back four of Brown, Devere, North/Avram, Hingert will probably be the go because it gives some stability and a 3-5-2 is a technical system which requires your wing-backs to be extraordinarily fit and it opens Brisbane up to counter-attack. Whether there is enough ability with Corey Brown, Dane Ingham, Jack Hingert and Connor O’Toole to run two-ways for an entire 90 minutes is another big question

Brisbane Roar are built for the now and embarking on a new era

I like your logic and it would play to Brisbane’s strength in midfield. The only questions I’d have is whether we have the wide capable enough of delivering an end product. Also, whether a defensive line of Luke Devere, Jade North and Avram Papadopoulos have enough speed to cover a quick breakaway attack against the likes of Connor Pain, Andrew Hoole etc.

It’d certainly make for a more interesting run to the end of the season and finals would be even more unpredictable.

Flying Swans are finals bound again

Love the thinking here, I often use it for Melbourne games.

Flying Swans are finals bound again

Those away games are winnable, especially three of them :

-Melbourne is in-form but injuries are piling up and key players are missing that might eventually pile up and affect their form.

– Adelaide have been hit and miss recently and with Sloane able to be tagged out of the game, they aren’t as invincible as they seemed earlier.

Huge questions over Geelong especially if Dangerfield and Selwood get injured or have an off game. Can they deliver if their stars don’t?

GWS have also been hit on the injury front but I couldn’t see Sydney winning here but 3 possible wins meaning they could get 12.

Flying Swans are finals bound again

Huge ‘what if’, you’re right but it’s just been such an unpredictable season, thank god I don’t do tipping
