Tennis and Golf are not quite the right comparison.

It is more like the NRL or the AFL. The ranking s are important because it is like a premiership, the teams are playing for a trophy and prize money.

Does Australia deserve to be ranked No. 1 in ODIs?

from 01/01/2010 Inida have played 25 games and won 17 and lost 7.
In the same period Australia has played 42 won 29 and lost 11.

The ranking reflect this. The rankings work perfectally well.

Does Australia deserve to be ranked No. 1 in ODIs?

Thats right, you are on top of the premiership because of points gained by results. It doesnt matter who is the best team this week.

Does Australia deserve to be ranked No. 1 in ODIs?

India beat Australia in one game last October (the other two games were rained out) that doesn’t make you number 1.

It is a premiership table. you have to win consistently.

I don’t think the system is flawed.

“There was one curious episode involving Matt Prior”.

Different teams get treated in different ways. If it was an Australian or a Pakistani it wouldnt have been described as “curious”. People would be screaming blue murder. It is interesting how the media covers it up for other teams.

Sorry …..to clarify I wasn’t talking about the selection panel……. I was talking about the comment

….”honestly believe that cricket is a dying game. Television lends itself to more explosive sports. I only have to look at my kids and their friends to see the future of cricket, and I have to say on that evidence the future of cricket is football, NRL and AFL…..”

Television lends itself to sports that have space for all the action on the screen. Hence the success of Cricket , NRL and NFL which are basically perfect made for TV sports.

Cricket and NFL have the added advantage of having many places for adds.

Making seeping statements based on personal experience really mean nothing.

I myself believe, that looking out my window at the park across from my home…….. watching kids play cricket all Sunday (since before the end of football season) that cricket is in good hands.…but again that means nothing

This is the problem with The Roar. People make sweeping statements based on their own personal experience, the so called “Moneyball” statements (. People seem to overgeneralize from personal experience: “People always thought their own experience was typical when it wasn’t. http://www.powells.com/review/2003_08_28.html). Our personal experiences are so small they really have no bearing on the big issues we discuss

We have to be careful with making sweeping statements because this can lead to lead to “truthiness” (Truthiness is a “truth” that a person claims to know intuitively “from the gut” without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.)

Asutralian cricketers do not pay the lowest of any male professional sport in the country

http://www.smh.com.au/business/nrl-players-at-the-bottom-of-the-pile-20100309-pvrt.html

“….Higher than expected earnings for Cricket Australia over the past four years meant its revenue was about $100 million above the $478 million forecast and, under a deal struck with the Australian Cricketers Association, players receive 25 per cent of total revenue generated.

AFL footballers also receive a quarter of total revenue from broadcasting rights, gate takings, sponsorship, merchandising and any other income received by the 16 clubs and the central administration.

Super 14 players receive 26 per cent of what is called ”player generated revenue”, a sum not comparable with total revenue because it excludes income such as foreign exchange earnings, interest received, rent and some grants. Rugby union players receive between 15 and 20 per cent of total revenue, about the same as NRL players……”

That’s a story about you, it doesnt mean anything.

I can no longer go down there, down to that sacred ground”

Well you havnt been going to the game for 31 years cause thats how long they have been wearing colored clothing

I wonder if an Australian grabbed an opposition player by the throat, like Trott did, what would the reaction be.

As always, it seems like the English are allowed to do what they want.

They are losing and at the same time they are accusing the other team of match fixing.

May long they continue to lose. It couldn’t happen to a nicer team.

from your link the game formed in 1848 was not Soccer

“…The Cambridge Rules, first drawn up at Cambridge University in 1848….”….”…They were not universally adopted. During the 1850s, many clubs unconnected to schools or universities were formed throughout the English-speaking world, to play various forms of football….”

Soccer started in 1863 with the formation of the FA even thought the game was probably more like the older Aussie rule because it involved

the following rules

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_association_football

“…..IX. A player shall be entitled to run with the ball towards his adversaries’ goal if he makes a fair catch, or catches the ball on the first bound; but in case of a fair catch, if he makes his mark he shall not run.
X. If any player shall run with the ball towards his adversaries’ goal, any player on the opposite side shall be at liberty to charge, hold, trip or hack him, or to wrest the ball from him, but no player shall be held and hacked at the same time…..”

Test cricket has risen in importance in recent years especially since the decline in ODI importanc

Cold hard facts show Tendulkar is overrated

How can you say they are dying out?. Lee palyed longer than most.

Lee played 76 tests. Mcgrath is the only Australian pace bowler to play more in 133 years.

Retiring Lee falls just short of cricket greatness
