AFL in 2020: It's not all bad news

There has been a lot of negativity in the media over the 2020 season so far over umpiring, complaining coaches, unfair fixtures, players diving, cheap shots, inconsistent match review decisions, low scores, inaccurate kicking and so on and so forth.

Gawn is the best ruckman of 2021, closely followed by Darcy.
Then a gap to Hickey, Nik Nat and Grundy.
However, the premiership is not necessarily won by the side with the best ruckman and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Dees slip to 5th after losses to the Eagles and Geelong.
Alternatively, if they win those two games (and their other two), they can still finish top.

'Isn’t going to cut it in September': Melbourne losing form at the wrong time

It is not going to make much difference but the fight for 8th spot will be interesting.
Realistically, there are only 5 teams that are challenging and there are only 3 games featuring two of these sides. As they all continue to falter, this may mean a team finishes 8th with only 9 wins and 13 losses.
Freo v Richmond, GWS v Richmond and St Kila v Freo are the three games we must give out 4 points.
All other games featuring these teams could (realistically) generate no wins.

'Missing the minor premiership might be the least of their worries': Six talking points from AFL Round 19

I think Cerra would be a good fit for the Blues. Personally, I’d like to see him stay at Freo but I expect him to go back to Vic.

I’d throw St Kilda into the discussion – finished 6th in 2020 with a percentage of 116.

Doesn’t matter who finishes 8th. Also, I think Sydney are still a sneaky chance for the top 4 (which is what I think ABRP was saying).

Max King is going to be a super star.
If he’s interested in moving to WA, the Eagles will have a spot for him as JK will be retiring soon.

Eagles survive King's masterclass

Not sure about Richmond winning their last 4 – they are scheduled to travel to Perth to play Freo and I think no Dusty will make that a particularly hard game. They are also scheduled to go to Sydney to play the Giants and have lost their last 4 there.
Of course, Covid may conspire to force these games into neutral venues which will give the Tigers an advantage.
If Richmond drop one of these games, the Bombers come in at the expense of the Eagles. If they drop both of these games then they finish 9th or 10th.
Not sure any of this really matters as the 7th or 8th placed teams are unlikely to progress beyond week one of the finals.

48 points is the magic finals number

It was an accident – nothing more, nothing less.
Martin did not do anything untoward and your comments are out of line (clearly others think they don’t even warranted a response). What evidence do you have that he attempted “to remove Robinson’s head from his shoulders”?
I’m not a Richmond supporter but Dustin Martin is not a dirty player.

Done and dusted: Tigers champ gets worst possible news after kidney injury

The Optus Stadium surface is looking under stress. The use has been only slightly more than usual but I think the problem has been that we just haven’t had real any break from the weather.
This complicates the AFL’s fixturing issues – there are only 5 more games scheduled there this season and not likely to be any planned finals, so if everything went to plan, there wouldn’t be a problem.
Unfortunately, Covid doesn’t follow our plans so there may necessarily be a heavier load on the ground over the next 5 or 6 weeks. The AFL will also want to keep it in relatively good condition in case some finals games need to be played outside of Victoria.
Once the rain in Perth breaks (usually late August), the ground will recover quickly.

Cats unsure of where to go next

Good analysis Dem.
All season, I’ve been saying the GF will be Brisbane and Bulldogs.
Dees have continued to perform when I thought they would drop off and the Cats seem to be getting better.
The Dogs are still in the hunt but the only other team I see causing trouble for these three is Sydney.
Brisbane appear to have an easy run home but …..

One of those days, or a real sign of worry for the Lions?

If it does hurt when he laughs, it might be hurting for a few days – 69 point thrashing of a fellow finals contender on their home deck!
Cats looking good.

Dockers forward reported for rib-crunching bump in first quarter

Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Plowman’s shouldn’t have been a free kick (let alone 2 weeks). This was a free kick but nothing more.

Heard of a tipster last week who forgot to put his tips in – got all the away teams and “picked 8”.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 18

Just found out the game has been switched to Metricon.
Not sure this makes much difference – instead of 20,000 at the G, there’ll be 5,000 at Metricon.
Still going with Tigers, I think it will take Brisbane a week or two to cover for Hipwood.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 18

Can they lose 5 in a row? I hope so but I think Brisbane might struggle without Hipwood and Adams – especially at the G. Also, Nank is back for the Tigers.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 18

Yep, probably should also award the 2021 Premiership to the Tigers as they have been the best team over the last 5 years.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 18

Last week’s tipping looked easy until about 6pm Thursday night.
This week looks precarious.
Here goes:
Freo
Richmond
Swans
Zero confidence in the first 3 tips
Bulldogs 80% confidence
Melbourne 80% confidence
St Kilda
Essendon
Collingwood
West Coast
Zero confidence in the last 4 tips

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 18

I agree with the general thread of the article but surely the question should be asked – why don’t we have a final 6 rather 8?
Other than when the Bulldogs finished 7th in 2016, there has really been no challenges from the 7th and 8th teams. Many finals games featuring these 7th and 8th placed teams have been a complete thrashing – if not the first week then definitely the 2nd week.
So, we have a final 8 for one reason only – $$$$

'Who can do the best Bradbury?' Six mediocre teams fighting out two finals spots

I referred to the Saints as a contender for 7th or 8th. I don’t consider them a contender for the flag – I think there are only 5 (maybe 6) teams that can win the premiership and they are all in the top 6 now.

Six talking points from AFL Round 17

The AFL is not about fairness, it’s about money.
5,000 at GHMBA vs 35,000 at Optus?

Six talking points from AFL Round 17

I think most fans are as bad as each other. I mentioned to someone the other day that some fans would complain if their team got 40 free kicks and the opposition none.
The umpires get it right most of the time.

Six talking points from AFL Round 17

Carlton got 2 home games against Freo because WA was unable to host a game. NSW are unable to host a game so the Swans game could be in Perth – it would even up Freo’s home and away ledger (currently 7 home and 9 away).
It would need to be either Sydney or Saints and as games can continue in Melbourne, it seems silly to change the St Kilda game.

Six talking points from AFL Round 17

Not really a “new” theory but that’s ok.
These lesser players are just as crucial when you have a fully fit squad. As fringe players they should be desperate at training to impress the coaches and to put pressure on other players. During games, they should be laying more tackles, creating space and providing shepherd’s etc.
Richmond’s success in 2017, 2019 and 2020 was not because of Dusty, it was because of Richmond’s whole list.
As an example, Dusty was credited with just 5 tackles in total over those three GF victories.

Do you also want 2.5 times the free kicks they receive?

Six talking points from AFL Round 17

Fair enough but it is coming across as though you have a chip on the shoulder with Liam. All teams get critiqued on these pages and it’s ok to disagree (that’s what the forum is for) but bottom line is Carlton have under performed on expectations for 2021.
Anything you, Liam or I say is not going to change that.
