I haven’t seen anyone properly explain how this is going to pay “huge dividends” in the future commercially. People say it will get more women to become pro, that doesn’t make sense as this is just the national team getting a raise. The world may take note for a minute and say “good on you Australia”, then quickly move on to the next news story. How is this going to pay huge dividends in the future commercially?

Matildas' equal-pay reports capture football's optimistic outlook - and the PFA's crucial role
The original comment here implied the matildas don’t deserve a 50/50 split of the combined revenue of both the men’s and women’s team considering they lose to U15 boys. The next commentator asked rather nonesensically what the point of that argument is, as you just did, I clarified the point, you said I’m hysterical. Now you are dragging tennis into it. Some people think women in sport shouldn’t receive the same pay as men, as they are the equivalent of teenage boys in regards to talent and ability, I’m not actually one of them, my argument is purely based on economics, you deserve to be paid appropriately by weigh of the money you make for your sponsors, team, competition and any other stakeholders.

Explain to me what part you disagree with? Do you believe the matildas are more talented than the Socceroos because they beat the Brazilian women’s side, and the Socceroos lose to the Brazilian men’s team?

What a silly thing to say, to imply I’m privileged? I’m guessing just because I’m male? And that negates the substance of my arguments? You are trying to weaken the substance of my arguments through means other than addressing them with your own. Yet I’m the one who is hysterical?

No, that would be cricket, then basketball

Because the best women lose against 15 year old boys, yet you are trying to somehow say that because those same women who lose to 15 year old boys, are somehow better than their male counterparts because they beat the Brazilian women’s side. Let’s see them play the Brazilian men’s side.

Paying matildas more by dipping into the Socceroos revenue isn’t gonna stop clubs prioritising boys teams. It would be fair to share like you said, I won’t lie though, I wouldn’t be stoked to playing on the cricket pitch while women are on the main, but fairs fair, and it should be shared.

Way to completely miss every point genius. Let me make another point, the women’s World Cup made less than 500mil, the men’s made more than 5bil. Sport is business

Her point is those women get paid the same or more than their male counterparts because they earnt it

I had this same thought, but thankfully, at least to my understanding this doesn’t include prize money, I could be wrong though

I’ve given you a reply to that in a different comment thread. Basketball is a better comparison for the effects of women’s pro teams and leagues on men’s (which is none) as women’s basketball has been pro longer than football, we have a sample to look at.

And I don’t care if those men make a million a day, it doesn’t entitle anyone else to a dollar of it. Should Ronaldo give his teammates a few thousand dollars out of his salary, just because he makes a ridiculous amount? He earnt it, he deserves it and it doesn’t entitle anyone else to a dollar of it. “Oh gee wiz, your men’s league makes so much money, can we have some so we can have or own pro league?” “If you wanna be pro, shouldn’t your league make its own money?”, “yeah but we can’t make profit as no one watches, but we sure do love playing sport”, “than go play amateur”, “but we want to be pro and have a career out of it!” So would I, but there isn’t such thing as a league for guys who aren’t good enough to be pro but would like to be, because no one would pay to watch.

Sharing would be fine, however, I agree with European clubs having to field women’s teams, why should they? If women’s football is burgeoning, why do they need existing clubs to create teams and leagues for them?

No $350 is the amount I’m complaining about, I don’t care what goes to the FFA, we produce the their players, they don’t do jack for grassroots, they FFA should subsidise refs and ground fees etc, but now they have no way of doing that. The FFA has an obvious incentive in the success of the A league as a revenue generator and they blew it through mismanagement, now we will probably end up footing the bill as they have no way of producing funds.

A professional sporting league is like a single entity, due to its nature, you are going to have winners and losers. Sure the winners deserve more for there merits, and they get more for their merits through attendance, sponsorship and prize money etc. All professional televised leagueS give out an equal amount of revenue raised to keep the losers competitive, boosting success of the whole league, and making those big winners even more money. For example, look at the EPL and NBA, those leagues were built by big teams, those big teams are now richer than ever because they have made their competitors more successful, “a rising tide raises all ships”. This logic does not apply to successes of men’s and women’s leagues, their success are not at all driven or affected by the other’s. Look at Australian basketball, the women have been successful for a long time, and that has zero correlation with the current success of the men’s team.

Equity has its place, not in a competitive environment. Equity is equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity

I did buy a matildas jersey because I like the design hahah

You are misrepresenting me and I accept your apology. One way to look at this is taking the logic to the end, all professionals should get the same pay because they all put in the same amount of work, that’s just not how sports and other industries such as acting work. Most top level pros work as hard as Ronaldo or Lebron James, but they won’t ever be as good or draw as much revenue.

Good for you, I’d be happy for them to EARN their pay too, as it stands it’s not equal

What part? That it is stupid to think people should be paid from what they earn? Yeah I agree, it doesn’t make sense
Matildas set for equal pay under landmark deal
It’s more than few thousand dollars in the long run. I understand that bias, if you are faced with a choice as to who gets the better fields or sheds between boys and girls of the same age, who are playing at the same time, I’m gonna choose boys, if I’m faced with the same decision between an U13 boys team and a senior women’s team, I’m gonna choose the senior women. How would you justify the opposite?

I’ve been watching the Joeys, the definitely playing a more entertaining brand than the Socceroos right now. But I agree it is stupid to think someone should be paid from what they earn

They (robbie) almost touched on it on the big sports breakfast this morning, but Robbie and Laurie got side tracked arguing how famous Sam Kerr is, right as one of the blokes was trying to ask Robbie if it’s good or bad giving the women a raise partly out of Socceroos revenue.
