Watson has averaged 73 with the ball over the last couple of years so I don’t think there’s any point of bringing him in for his bowling. His record has him as one of Australia’s best every one-day cricketers but he’s been out of form for too long to justify his selection.
It’s great to have a lot of bowling options but if that comes at the expense of a decent batting line-up it’s not worth it. If Maxwell is batting at five against a team who can put the ball in the right spot and move it around a bit Australia could be in a bit of trouble.

FULL-TIME
GWS 9.12.66
Essendon 11.15.81
Not a huge margin but the Giants really put in a strong performance tongiht. The Bombers could have been a bit cleaner but that sort of intensity is promising after their recent form. Daniher took some strong contested marks in the forward line. The Bombers managed to create some space down there which suited him. Shiel and Treloar battled hard in the midfield all night.

THREE-QUARTER TIME
GWS 5.9.39
Essendon 8.11.59
Exciting end to that quarter. Both teams scuffle after Myers throws an elbow at Smith that will almost certainly draw weeks, if anyone can make predict how the match review panel will allot points. That act injected passion into a game that certainly hasn’t lacked for intensity. The Bombers have cost themselves a few goals tonight with poor ball-handling, especially through the middle of the ground.

I like your point. Selectors definitely take a shine to some players without much evidence and sometimes it works (MIchael Clarke, David Warner) and sometimes it doesn’t (Shane Watson in Tests, Shaun Marsh). Glenn Maxwell is another who gets a great run because of his potential. Pretty unfair on guys who consistently perform at state level.
For the sake of balance, Bailey must replace Marsh
