The difference being first time around Stan had very little to no data to go by, certainly nothing that was primary data based on their own system’s viewing information. All they really had was what Fox/Kayo gave them, and even then Fox didn’t have a complete data model since a large chunk of their customers were still on Foxtel cable only (which unless connected to the IQ system, did not provide info on who was watching what when back upstream).

So Stan went into the deal without a complete picture of what it is worth.

Now they have a few years of solid data they can use to measure the true value of the Super Rugby offering.

That data would make for some interesting reading / analysis.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

Given that this horrible occurrence happened AFTER the players were shown the red cheese it should have no bearing in the outcome of their judicial hearings.

But we know it will.

Regarding broadcast negotiations, SANZAR (or whatever they call themselves these days) are novices taking plastic swords to a fight with seasoned media professionals armed with viewing data across the whole competition.
They are outgunned, outclassed, and outwitted. There is little hope of coming away with a ‘good deal’ that will financially secure the competition or the product. Instead they will come away with a poor deal which sees the group having to seek external funding to help fund Stan and Sky’s content production.
What they need is a visionary that can put together a 5 year strategic plan for growth and funding of the Super Rugby hierarchy to ensure that there is enough funds to keep the clubs in the game, and generate the exposure and audience that will have sponsors knocking on their doors, not the other way around.
It is a shame that to date we have seen little evidence anyone involved in Super Rugby either side of the Tasman has the brains or the ability to pull this together.
The best they have is “Rugby is a world game!”. Dopes.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

YouTube has started to move into YouTube originals and funding production of content. Accessible only to subscribers.

Super Rugby AU really should be talking to them. Especially if they have an eye on the US market.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

Absolutely… but the ‘earn’ calculation is a tricky one. The model appears to be quantity over quality, and the ‘earn’ is calculated a proportion of monthly subscription. Probably a whole new field of economics 🙂

Netflix has proven the model isn’t about ‘wowing’ viewers, it’s about giving them just enough to keep them from unsubscribing.

The slide of Disney+ content quality as it tries to make its bottom line work is further proof.

When it comes to broadcasting I always wonder why they don’t approach YouTube and see if they’re interested.

YouTube is the sleeping giant in sports broadcasting.

Broadcasters have shown already all they want is more content. Quality seems of very little concern.

Probably the worst week of Super Rugby 2024 so far. Congrats to the Brumbies but WTF Waratahs and Force?!

Meanwhile all the news around the ‘hood is back to the future aka we’re going to keep doing the same things that got us here and it has been a sharp descent from the first few rounds.

Brumbies make it 12 straight against Tahs as Bell hobbles off in worrying sign for Wallabies

And this is the player safety concern. The scrum is won. The ball should be played.
The scrum should be about winning possession, not winning penalties.

'Insane and total stupidity': Drua have two SENT OFF as Rebels score 33 unanswered points to win again

The thing that annoys me especially under current interpretations is you must use the ball immediately from the base of a ruck but you can hold it there forever in a scrum until the referee decides to give you a penalty.

Surely for player safety and entertainment if the ball is available at a scrum it must be used.

Nearly 20 years ago I played a season of Rugby for the Sharjah Wanderers. Was a vibrant club full of people from all over and enjoyed the status of being the only place in the Emirate where you could have a beer after a game of rugger.

Oh yeah wow. So why only now do we hear it was a problem?
Not like Stiles would have any Ill feeling towards the Reds is it?

Gordon as a test standard inside centre?

Based on?

Five things we learnt: Why Cheika could be the man to resurrect Tahs, Thor is the new Quade, value of sevens

I’m not going to question whether he played high minutes for the Reds in 2022, he certainly did. However, he also played 0 minutes for the Reds in 2023 and went into a Rugby Australia managed rehab program to try and get him fit for the World Cup.
Why is it only now we are hearing he is still recovering from his high minutes from nearly 2 years ago? Has it been mentioned before?
And FWIW I want to see the big fella fit and firing and wish him all the best in his recovery. I am not down on him as some posters are for picking up a paycheque whilst doing so.

I’m guessing he’s been promised the gig before the first round of this season. We’ll never know though.

Just fortuitous to be the guy standing there waiting for the phone to ring I guess.

You don’t think Coleman deserves more support and time? Especially more support.

It appears decisions have already been made long ago and the incoming coach already lined up.

Just need to watch the motions now.

Clearly? I had clearly avoided saying Cheika was the one with his hand on the knife.

He did not benefit from it?

He certainly benefited from it whether he had a hand in it or not.
