Once in a tipping comp I came 3rd (out of 20something) tipping the entire season before a ball was kicked. Think it was the year we lost the GF to the storm (and Billy Slater almost lost an ear), so tipping those two every week had definitely helped.

NRL tipping cheat sheet: How to solve your weekly struggles when it comes to footy predictions

The only good thing about Souths winning on good Friday was that we were gifted one wonderful week free of “Bunnies in Crisis!” articles. Oh well, it was good while it lasted…

NRL News: Wighton says 'sorry' Latrell has burning desire after Gus raises retirement call, Annesley refutes hip-drop critics

Yeah, I’m probably being a bit too negative. The good was really good.

There was a just a set of the one out stuff early in the second, and I was “uh oh, I’ve seen this before”. I guess some of that was fatigue, heavy track and no one (other than penrith) keeps that early pace going all game

Overall I feel happy about it

Young send-off 'over the top', Radley sin-bin 'ridiculous' says Robbo as Roosters reduced to 11 on nightmare night

I’ll take the win, and the first 20 minutes, but not much to smile about other than that.
But we still seem to be one the “laziest” (probably a bit too harsh a term) teams in posession, when we know we’re doing a one out hit up the entire rest of the side just stands and watches, and so then the opposition know it as well. Desperately need some support runners to give the ball carrier a chance of winning the collision.

That said, I’ll happily take the two, and the obvious improvement over last year

Do you think the Knights have similar issues to the Raiders (and maybe the Cowboys too), namely young fellas would prefer to live in the bigger cities?
Not saying it’s a major issue, just that it’s a factor which makes it harder to recruit a top quality roster. Anecdotally it seems that they both recuit from the UK more than other clubs.

Knights already at sixes and sevens again: What exactly was the rush to re-sign O’Brien long term?

I’d rather players have the leverage than TV/NRL executives or gambling companies.

Getting value for money from stars is the biggest competitive advantage in the NRL - and the flip side can be devastating

The souths hype is a bit over the top. Titan’s haven’t won a game or looked any good this year, but there’s not 2 stories a day about them. I get the NRL is a soap opera for blokes and we all apparently love drama drama drama, but we’re only 3 weeks in. And I (obviously) sincerely hope they go 0-4 tomorrow

NRL Round 3 Talking Points: Blowouts, bad bunnies, and bunker babies are back

Vossy would be the perfect “colour guy” commentator, with another as the the play-by-play. Unfortunately only ex players are given that role, so he’s kind of stuck. I’ve said before Fox must love him, he takes the scatter gun approach to searching for drama/controversy/sensation in every game, which I assume is one of the things they ask from their staff. I like what I’ve seen of his shows, “Boots and all”, “The fan”, etc.

The world cup was eye openning, the UK commentators were so much better than ours. Much more “old school” media as opposed to the “everything is a controversy” tabloid crap we have unfortunately become used to here.

NRL Round 3 Talking Points: Blowouts, bad bunnies, and bunker babies are back

While I really enjoyed my team getting a convincing win, Raiders v Warriors was the best game I watched over the weekend. Speed, intensity, and not many errors.

Not sure about the stats, but both Souths and the Storm seemed to drop a LOT of ball. Surprised the storm weren’t flogged. Is it that they’re still that good, or are the Knights ordinary. And the storm butchered that early Paps/Meany chance too.

Souths really walked though us last good Friday, so hoping for something better this year. A bit worried about the bounce back after Souths big loss to the Roosters. Fingers crossed.

NRL Round 3 Talking Points: Blowouts, bad bunnies, and bunker babies are back

One thing I noticed was the Raiders wingers held their width in defense, rarely left the opposing winger unmarked, seemed very effective. But guess the downside is the risk of one-on-one misses like when Young missed RTS.

Also think the raiders need to start with Hosking. Had a couple of mistakes, but overall I thought he added more than Whitehead. Wish my team had those sort of dilemas.

Wow. One of the most unique interviews I’ve seen. Full credit to him

Demetriou has 'no doubt' he can turn around Souths after disaster derby sees Latrell binned in Roosters riot

Thought the Raiders number 17 also had a top game. Heavily involved in a lot of the goal line defence

NRL Round 2 Talking Points: Robberies in the north and south, high shots are back and some good losers

I was ok with it. He definitely dropped it (not inteding to kick), but to me it looked like he (accidentally) got is shin to it before it hit the ground, so I don’t think it was a knock on.

'It didn't look great': Ciraldo rages at ref after Nikora escapes send-off on wild night in Cronulla

As I said in the live chat, I hate granting a penalty for something that occurred several tackles previously. Is there a limit on how far back they can go? Effectively how much of the game can be “erased”?

I’m fine with putting players on report or in the bin after the fact. But surely if we’re onto the next play it’s too late to go back and award a penalty. When reviewing tries they never go back further than the previous tackle.

More bunker…
Exactly what fans have been clamouring for

NRL News: Field goal rules changed, Sticky fires up over 'inconsistency' in All Stars ban, Wigan prop out of Panthers duel

Didn’t think I explained myself well. They article made me consider that the fact he has a reputation for the risky/silly pass means defenders are less likely to go “he’s obviously not going to pass” and jam in on him. Not saying the silly/risky every works, just the fact it’s an option helps keep defenders guessing. Not something I’d thought about before.

I definitely agree that as he gets more experience/smarts/composure/class with time he’ll be able to keep defenders guessing without the risky/silly reputation.

Walsh v the NRL: How far can the fullback go now that every team has seen the Broncos' best move?

I agree he’ll be much better when “the gave slows down for him”.

But I think the article is saying the risky passes is part of his arsenal. Makes it harder for defenders to make early decisions, because they know it’s a fair chance he’ll try the “crazy play”. Like everything, it’s a delicate balance, but I don’t think a consistently mistake free Walsh offers as much threat overall.

Walsh v the NRL: How far can the fullback go now that every team has seen the Broncos' best move?

Billy Slater missed several seasons worth of footy, but you’d always have him back. And his form was consistently good when he was on the field.

Papenhuyzen v Meaney v Faalogo: How can the Storm fit all of their fullbacks into one team?

Hard no from me. I want Australia to win everything we compete in, every time.

I acknowledge the better team won when we lose. And admire performances like that amazing spell from Joseph (when was the last time an Aussie quick bowled a 10 over spell, and then kept going after the session break – incredible!). But I am still dissappointed.

It's not un-Australian to cheer against Australia - in fact, in our favourite sports, it is the best option

spectacular

Masters of the Air: The NRL’s ten best acrobatic tries featuring GI, Folau, Young ... and a prop

I have vague memories of one test against the kiwis, around 2016-18 I think. Dugan at centre with Matt Gillette inside him completely dominated their side of the field, both with and (even more so) without the ball. Awesome performance from the pair of them.

Zac v Tyrell: If the Dragons want to get the most out of their spine, they have to get the best out of Sloan

One big difference with Drinkwater, is he does organise the defence well. While he is a poor individual defender there was an artical last year which hilighted that the Cowboys defended much better as a team when he was on the field. I don’t think Sloan offers that, which basically means he offers little when they don’t have the ball. But he is still pretty young, and you would expect will definitely improve in that area.

Is Cody Ramsey likely to come back? Or is he done for good?

Zac v Tyrell: If the Dragons want to get the most out of their spine, they have to get the best out of Sloan

Some of this could depend on how much Brandon Smith’s fitness has improved. If he can get close to 80 minutes, then there’s a chance they play Sualii off the bench, similar to how the Storm have used Papenhauzen. It is an option they have, seeing as Manu can cover 6 and 1, while Keary could easily cover 7, but would leave them a bit exposed at 9.

On paper their lineup looks pretty damn good, and they are due some luck with injuries, been a while since they’ve had their first choice all on the field for most of a season.

Joey v Dom v Toops: Why the Roosters should ditch Suaalii from their backline for Round 1

I think it’s all a bit harsh. 3rd on the ladder is still one hell of an achievement. And over 25 games I don’t think it an be put down to luck.

Like all top clubs they lose players to salary cap, and have done before. But never 4 international quality players at the same time. With only Kafusi not part of the 2022 world cup (he had a difficult year spending a lot of time away in the US where his dad was sick). I incorrectly predicted 2023 be the year the Storm fell away, and feel I was proven comprehensively wrong. I think they would be very happy with the year.

For mine Penrith are a once-in-a-lifetime quality team. Not being as good as them is nothing to be ashamed of.

Pressure Points: Cameron Munster will know that 2023 wasn't his best - but he remains key to Storm's 2024
