I appreciate your words, Jason, but while I absolutely agree that this accusation shouldn’t be ignored, he was never actually charged. There’s a tricky balance to be made when discussing Winston and this issue, and I think that scares people into either ignoring it completely or going too far in the other direction.
I too have noticed this offseason how little NFL writers and fans make mention of all the things wrong with the investigation and how the college acted, and I am unsure if that’s just because they don’t know, or simply don’t care because of his talent. I hope it’s the former.
Jameis Winston brings talent and risk to NFL Draft
I think you’re both right. With the state attorney declining to charge him, I don’t think there’s any chance he’ll go to prison now (of course, he’d still need to be proven guilty, too). I’m happy to be proved wrong here. Even if the new civil suit against him forces him to apologize and pay, I have doubts that it would change any NFL minds.
Jameis Winston brings talent and risk to NFL Draft
Only a few hours after my article is published and more news on Winston breaks: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/04/16/erica-kinsman-civil-lawsuit-jameis-winston-rape-florida-state/25896871/ Interested to see if this impacts where he is drafted.
Jameis Winston brings talent and risk to NFL Draft
Absolutely agree that his playoff record should factor into the discussion, but I think everything else far outweighs it. I really don’t want to make the call, but gun to my head I would *probably* have Brady and Montana above him, but that’s all.
Peyton Manning has one more big record to break
Ha! I guess I am a lame apologist then! You’ll excuse me if I’m not willing to dismiss the player who will own every single meaningful QB record by the time he finishes his career.
Peyton Manning has one more big record to break
I can understand Josh’s point. Peyton Manning’s postseason record will always be a part of his legacy, but you can’t use it to dismiss his place in history. He will most likely own every major QB record by the end of this season. I don’t think we should consider postseason performance as the most important factor in determining a QB’s worth. Certainly a factor, but not the biggest one.
Peyton Manning has one more big record to break
Thanks Brin. That QB-Coach relationship is going to be very interesting. It seems like Kubiak is set to do everything it takes to keep Manning fresh for the entire season. Could that mean he gets taken out early in winning games? Perhaps, but given how competitive Manning is, it might take an actual injury to see him off the field.
Peyton Manning has one more big record to break
Not sure I can agree with you there Joe. When you own every major QB record at the end of your career and five MVPs, I think it’s safe to say you’re one of the all-time greats. His playoff record will always be a knock against him, sure, but on the whole it’s him, Brady and Montana in my book as the best all-time and I’m not sure I could break them up.
Don’t forget, the Colts defense certainly played well in their Super Bowl win, but they were ranked 21st overall in the season and it was Manning who won the Super Bowl MVP on the day.

Great list Ned. I can only agree with you. I think the Revis-Jets signing is probably the only one that could really work.
NFL Free Agency: Five moves I hated
There’s some pretty compelling football reasons to want to keep him on the team. The Vikings believe they’re ready for a playoff push. Not sure I buy it, but they’re probably closer than most believe.
For Adrian Peterson and the Vikings, breaking up is hard to do
I can’t fault anything you’re stated above, Ben. It’s hard when a player of his caliber has this kind of falling out with this team. That said, I do wonder how different the situation would be if he wasn’t an elite player.
I believe he thinks his team betrayed him because of the way they worked with the NFL to get him on the exempt list. As you say, that actually allowed him to get paid. I guess he just wanted his team to fight for him more?

Those kinds of moves and tricks still take skill and entertain.
Proposed changes to NHL overtime will mean more winners and fewer shootouts
It’s an interesting idea. I was never a huge fan of the shootouts, but I always enjoyed a crazy spinning goals or cool tricks.
Proposed changes to NHL overtime will mean more winners and fewer shootouts
I wouldn’t recommending going away from the way we have it now. Because the season is so short, it’s really hard to gauge the true worth of a team based on record alone. This is especially complicated given how some teams simply have tougher schedules than others (not to mention how fluky some wins and losses can be). Don’t forget the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks proved they belonged in the playoffs by beating the 11-5 Saints in the wildcard round of the 2010-11 season.
The NFC South debacle should be a catalyst for change
Hey mate! I’d love to, but unfortunately I am limited to helping out in the background for now. Hopefully some time in the future.
RGIII a Washington wash-out
Only my Washington Redskins could so skillfully take a talent like RG3 and grind him to dust.
RGIII a Washington wash-out
Definitely a more important catch by Tyree, but I think Beckham’s one showed more skill and athletic ability. Hard to judge for me.
Odell Beckham's one-handed NFL catch labelled 'the best ever'
Good read Sam. Certainly something to think about. While I don’t think the legal system gave him the punishment he deserved, it’s clear the NFL is trying to make amends for their Ray Rice mistakes.
Peterson being punished for the acts of others
Great read Andrew. I have to say he completely slipped under my radar. I may need to turn my NHL fan membership card back in.
The Dominator enters the hockey hall of fame
Fantastic read Mark, well done.
MLB's Australian series is a big opportunity for the local game
Ha! You’re the worst O’Connell.
Now clearly what was really missing was some Robert Griffin III.
The Super Bowl is a poor NFL advertisement
I think you’re captured the primary issue here, Joe. Winston wasn’t charged, but the investigation was a completely mess / hampered with. This creates a kind of tension for the NFL evaluators, teams, and fans. Certainly worth discussing.
