If fixtures were ever going to be cut from the schedule, it has to happen now with the broadcast rights and CBA being renegotiated. As we know, less games equals a pay cut for players, which you can bet they won’t ever agree to.
The 17+5 I don’t mind, but I’ve always been in favour of a two year rolling fixture, with certain ‘cash in’ fixtures set aside. One thing the NHL does well is emphasise famous rivalries and emerging powers. The New York Rangers aren’t playing a bunch of meaningless fixtures against San Jose, but you can bet they’ll match up five times a season against cross town rivals the Islanders. Let’s see more derbies, showdowns and blockbusters, while also having a fair fixture. That’s the best of both worlds.
