RE – Hiding Rugby behind a paywall. Have a listen to the Australian’s podcast The Breakdown which professes to “uncover” the reason for Rugby’s decent in popularity in Australian. Not 1 mention of the pay TV deal that took the game away from mainstream audiences & game NRL & AFL a free ride for 25 years.

The Wrap: Wallabies squad unveiling a step forward and a step backward

Well written. Living in Melbourne I don’t read Buzz but I do watch alot of Fox. Personally have never cared for what I see as an agenda driven journo who’s opinions & the topics of conversation he raises generally aren’t “the main game” he appears to be of the opinion that if someone doesn’t in his mind”respect buzz” they are legit targets. Many times you hear him complain that “they didnt return my calls” like it’s a hanging offence. Over the last few months it has become obvious that his colleagues are less & less accepting of his view point as well which hit peak this week. A lot of them particular Paul Kent go silent when he goes on one almost to not fuel further talk just get it overwith.

2018: The year rugby league turned on Buzz Rothfield

you lost me at Hannigan.

With Israel Folau out injured, it's time to bite the bullet and make some changes

Credibility lost the moment you named Hannigan in your run on team pre cut.

Some of Michael Cheika's Bledisloe Cup selections don't make any sense

Gus Gould – grain of salt. Sounds like a politics play….. Toxic management particularly the running comentary by himself. shows waht sort of bloke he is.

Gould again slams 'embarrassing' Griffin

that Buzz bloke is the worst…..

Ref bashing, the low-hanging fruit of rugby league journalism

The no “dickheads” policy is in the eye of the beholder, especially in the case of QC. He has rehabilitated himself after a stupid youth. One might argue he & Kurtly Beale are a similar narrative except that Beale is being allowed to flourish at NSW & the Wallabies. Both huge talents, big personalities, sketchy defenders but great in attack.

that its Thorn who determines the “dickhead” policy worries me as he is reported to be in the job for 10 years & things can easily turn into the “coach is God policy” where sycophants prosper. Strong teams have an inclusive culture that attempts to work with the whole group. Thorn did not even try to work with his inherited roster. Instead we suffer another dismal SR season & the QRU burns more & more money.

The blind faith in Thorn because of his playing career is troubling as he has no runs on the board as coach (An NRC means nothing Stiles won 2) nor at Qld Rugby & is now ending careers of servants of Qld Rugby, something he has yet to prove he is a servant of. I will Qld to win every week but the play this year particularly without a 10 has been 1 dimensional. The scrum-yes awesome, (helps that a once in a generation prop is on board) but the forgetable backline play sucks.

Brad Thorn's selection policy has him on the right track for a Reds resurrection

Discipline yes. There is a complete & utter lack of discipline in Australian Rugby – agreed. But it is greater than the players, its the administration -the hap hazard approach to running the game.

There has been a complete lack of LEADERSHIP.

Lordie all your examples are correct but you are not seeing the common denominator that drives discipline…. Great leaders.

Australia still hasn't come to grips with professional rugby

For me its a simple equation. QC $600K, KMH, ~ $500K, Graham & Stiles still on the payroll. It sickens me to see so much $$$ wasted. Imagine what this could be used for with youth development / retention.

I say have Cooper involved & get your $ worth. Have him mentor Stewart & co. I don’t long for Harlem Globetrotter stuff just a well run back line…. Use the guy you are paying so much too even to pass on some knowledge.

Reds tame the mighty Lions, thousands left disappointed

At the game on Saturday it was quite obvious that the minute Willy G left the field the Rebels became a Rabble….. When decisions were to be made opinions were flying thick & fast (looked like some bickering too).

Coleman may be captain in the team sheet but Genia leads this team. Without Genia & Hodge there is no decision maker.

It was so frustrating to see it unfold in front of me.

No Genia, no worries for Rebels: Hodge

hmm…. the plethora of lost souls accepted back into NRL, Matt Lodge et al vs a happy clapping, bible bashing, sober athlete that is a community role model…

yes his opinions are from a darker time but really? You’d rather have all the dregs given “second chances” vs burn in hell Izzy? I don’t see any video footage of him beating anyone doing the rounds…..

I’d be pleased to see him back in Broncos colours…. I hate seeing him in Waratah colours…..

Tell your story walking Israel. The NRL doesn’t want your crap

Agree with the sentiments entirely. I have 2 daughters & nothing has brought the culture I grew up within the 1980’s Brisvegas into sharper contrast than their arrival. I feel the current catharsis that the media & broader society is undergoing will make their lot easier when they reach their teens/adolescence.

I’ll ask this though. Where were these good thoughts & intentions when KB allegedly behaved so abhorrently towards a female wallabies staffer. From the outside it looked like the wallaby coach took a stand only for the “boys club” to rally & he “lost” the dressing room. Media then beat up a story that essentially victim shamed & KB returned to the fold the “naughty boy”…..

Its when the pure words written above are actually followed through with deeds that we as a community can have hope for our daughters

Maybe it’s time to break the bro-code

yet we hear a load of pontification about a no excuses culture…..

Michael Cheika deserves a break - and our respect

noun
1.
a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, achievements.

Abilities – Questionable. Game plans, defensive structure & skill levels of the team have been poor over the Chieka Tenure. He obviously has the ability to inspire, fire up & motivate. His players appear to unite with him.

Qualities- this is where I struggle. Chieka has very little self awareness. His behaviour in the public space is deeply floored. This is the leader of this team, the culture lead. He sets a low benchmark in his disrespect for fans, former players (ie The Michael Lynagh outburst), referees & officials, members of the crowd (what did he mouth off in retaliation to an English fan’s lip on his trip to the sideline last week?).

The behaviour & lack of control he shows to the rugby community almost weekly at games, after games, in press conference is terrible. It is not that he is “passionate” or wears his “heart on his sleeve” it is immature and shows a deeply lacking self awareness.

Achievements – Yes he has won a SR title, had success with Munster & got the WBs to a World Cup final. I acknowledge these.

For me the reason I cannot respect Michael Chieka is in his qualities as a leader & person. The lack of self awareness & overall character traits that make me cringe every time I & my kids watch a Wallaby game.
