There was little practical benefit to either the NRL playign in vegas or the AFL playing in the northern states a week early. ALL the benefit is in PR value. The NRL looks fun, reckless and maybe forward looking. The AFL looks petty and insecure. Huge win for the NRL honestly.

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

The proposition is for two games (three when you include 7’s) but one governing body? The managerial class always dreams up situations where they would be able to manage even bigger bureaucracies. The managers get paid more but it won’t actually change the reality that the competition between League and Union is a zero sum game for Players, Sponsorships, Publicity, Ticket Sales and Broadcasting deals. Considering League is way ahead in Australia in all of these areas the net affect will be paying some people a exorbitant amount to enforce League’s assistance of Union. Even if it was the other way around you are dreaming if you think two smaller self interested organizations can not work to better outcomes for them game than some mega bureaucracy.

10 reasons league and union should merge to become One Rugby - and give AFL nightmares

I felt sorry for Rodgers, I interpreted his move to Union as resulting from Sailor and Tuqiri freezing him out of rep football in League. Then both Sailor and Tuqiri followed him over to Union.

Regardless I think the real message of league to Union conversion is to aim for Wallabies, rather than the All Blacks.

RTS a cautionary tale for code hoppers, heavyweight stars slim down, Reece for Dally M: NRL Week 1 Trials Talking Points

A Samoan player telling an Aboriginal player to stop whinging about race, would be an interesting controversy for the media to tackle, but I don’t think this is what this actually is. I think the way it would be handled is that anyone that is Christian is basically white.

Manly star in strife over 'accidentally' liking racially charged Latrell social media post: 'Not intentional at all'

Would have loved to see Mam and Walsh play with Hynes and LAttrell. Or Walsh on the same team as Ponga and Johnson. Unfortunatly neither happening.

All Stars teams CONFIRMED: Walker OUT and in race for Sin City, other key stars locked in, Titans young gun gets call-up

Origin is getting in the way of League LARPing as if it has an international game by encouraging people who grew up in Australia to play for Australia. It is mazing how committed people are to this LARP.

If Kiwis and Poms are allowed to play, Origin might be about to stumble into eligibility rules that work

a. What is the point of having this competition AND the world cup
b. Is Australia still a tier 1 nation?

'It will kill rugby': Minnows feel shafted as World Rugby hails 'historic' revamp with exclusive Nations Championship

Really the statement sets out a necessary but not sufficient requirement, it does not really promise Grand Final winners success in future years. But is there any evidence that teams with long absences from the GF (say five years) are less likely to win. My first Rugby League Memory is the Broncos winning their first ever Grand Final in 1992 so I have always thought the statement was false. Storm in 2000, Cronulla is 2016 and the Resurgent Dragons in 2010 and Souths 2014 would back this up but this is hardly a statistical analysis.

Fact or fable - do you really have to lose a grand final to win one?

Sports should be included in the Olympics that increase the sports profile, not with the aim of improving the Olympics profile. Cricket is a horrible inclusion and they should at least be made to sacrifice having one of their world cups if it is to be included.

Cricket set for Olympic comeback in LA after 128 years on the outer - but Australia may struggle to qualify

I would also suggest that rep sports is actually at odds with modern professionalism. There is space for rep sports to be a cherry on top of regular club content (Football World Cups, Origin and Dream team at the Olympics) it has to work in with the main content making domestic competitions. Even in Cricket domestic t20 competitions are starting to squeeze out the international competition.

Don't blame Latrell for picking the Koori Knockout over the Kangaroos - ask why the Roos brand is so devalued

No one cares about their national identity any more they only care about their ethnic identity. Lewis and Pearce’s ethnic and national identity were entirely aligned, there was no tension. They also did not have to cringe at having Australian as a key part of their identity. Very few people want to play for Australia because they strongly identify as Australian. Now the Australian team is made up of people who either or:
1) don’t have another ethnic identity competing in the International (really inter ethnic) Rugby League
2) still see some prestige playing for the Kangaroos since it is the best football team
3) see it as a step up in their career.
the Kiwis are in an even worse position than the Kangaroos now since point 2 does not apply to them either.

Don't blame Latrell for picking the Koori Knockout over the Kangaroos - ask why the Roos brand is so devalued

It is very naïve to not to realize that “women’s sport needs more investment” is a far more powerful political narrative than “soccer needs more investment”

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naïve

To be fair the is will affect the youngsters through their Kayo subscriptions which they will keep to watch American sports. To be honest its American sport which is actually on the ascendancy here.

Foxtel's axing of beIN Sports is another slap in the face for football fans

When Foxtel had the rights to everything everything life was great. I used to love to watch the New Zealand leg of the Super Rugby before I switched over to the later NRL matches. During summer I could watch the Big Bash during the week, but then watch the A League over the weekend rather than get burnt out on Twenty 20 cricket.

Don’t ask me why but I used to love the set up where the same Foxtel hosts were in the studio for the A League and then the Premier League. And while I am not a Football expert the BEIN offering still gave me something to watch between the end of the last NRL game on Saturday night until I fell asleep. Now everything is on its own subscription service I can’t really warrant these extra costs for these small joys. .

He wasn’t that good in last years Origin either. HE just has a lot of run metres.

We need to talk about Teddy: Why a Game 2 defeat might spell the end for the Blues captain in Origin

People who are in favor of the Voice (or any other “progressive” cause )are in favor of here to now apolitical organizations coming out in favor of the voice (or any other progressive causes). They understand if you care about something you need to get everyone on side. People who are against the Voice etc. want organizations to remain neutral. Its a pity that the people against the current progressive cause-de-jour were not more demanding.

Should Australian sport be raising its voice?

The problem with the hip drop is that no one, (including this author) agree on what the hip drop is. The match review committee is of the belief that Patrick Carrigan did not perform a hip drop. Nothing to do with people thinking the game has gone soft.

End of the world all over again: The non-existent hip drop crisis

The biggest risk with Ponga is him getting knocked out. The obvious thing to do then is to select Ponga at fullback but Walsh at 18th man.

Billy don't be silly and just pick Reece

The tigers (and on the flipside the Roosters) show that a badly run team will always suck no matter what mechanisms are in place to even the competition and a well run team will never be far away from being competitive. And to be honest this is fine, what value is there in achieving something in competition engineered to ensure you are a net winner at least half the time.

Intervention needed: NRL should bring in transfer windows or draft to help toothless Tigers regain some bite

Doesn’t make it any more accessible

On a global scale, Australian rugby's war with rugby league is meaningless

A new hooker ( or Cory Paix developing more minutes) and someone to replace Farnsworth and Flegler all sound great. However you are picking the wrong time to declare that they are not premiership contenders. I wouldn’t want to limit my expectations on the Broncos any more than I want to get to excited about their great start. Happy to just wait and watch how this season plays out.

The three signings that would make the Broncos premiership contenders

“My game is big in Kazakstan” is an odd cope.

On a global scale, Australian rugby's war with rugby league is meaningless

If Rugby can’t hang with League, AFL and Cricket in Australia, it will not be able to hang with NFL, Hockey, Basketball and Baseball in the states.

On a global scale, Australian rugby's war with rugby league is meaningless

Pre War on terror USA and Tokugawa Japan (Japan started opening up with the Meiji period after 1862) were proud confident nations that valued their own culture. If these natiosn were insecure and felt the need to prove themselves by doing the same thing everyone else was doing they would never have become the worlds to biggest cultural exporters.

On a global scale, Australian rugby's war with rugby league is meaningless

To be honest I don’t think Grass roots neglect is the issue. They probably should have looked into expanding past the private schools, but to be honest the private schools should have at least been a solid base. There are currently 16 pathways to a professional career in league in Australia. There are 5 for Union.
