The ARL was jointly founded by the NSWRL and the QRL, the NRL didn’t exist until 1998 and is directly managed by the ARL. And yet the NSWRL is the only party that gets any historical recognition

😱 where the hell did you come from???

Maybe it was more of a south side thing, but driving from Logan to Robina was about the same as going to Suncorp and quicker by train. Even driving from the Redlands where I was at the time to Robina was quicker then a train to Suncorp thanks to the wonky Cleveland line. But there was definately a ton of promotion for the Titans, I’ve still got a Titans jacket from ’07 and I’ve never been a supporter

They’ve had player insurance since 2014. But they’re not asking for more insurance, they want to set up a fund that can be accessed to pay for surgeries when needed. A fund that would fit under the proposed cap.

“Becoming an alternative to the Broncos has always been our aim and to draw back to our game fans who may have slipped across to AFL as a result of the Lions’ success,” Michael Searle 2006 (https://amp.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/canny-titans-get-the-foundations-right-starting-with-young-legs-20060716-gdnz13.html)
I think you may be surprised about how much of redcliffe supporter base was pre-existing

I was there 10 years ago!! Where abouts were you? Coverage was starting to ramp up a bit when I left, but that also aligned with the Origin game at the MCG

At least they’re included in hall of fame stat’s now. Would’ve been funny seeing Wally with a three year career

Silly man, those sides don’t count. Just look up premiership winners on nrl.com. Goes all the way back to 1908 and clearly no QLD teams played that entire time

Does that help their home games?

The Bronco’s were built off the back of Origin’s popularity and the Storm has taken 25 years to get where it is.
The Titans marketing strategy coming in was to be an alternative to the Bronco’s and to be everyones second team. They weren’t restricting themselves to the GC. They also signed guys like Campbell, Rogers, Walker, Prince and Bailey. Crowds dropped significantly after those guys retired. Dolphins meanwhile still don’t have a marque signing

They’ve got about the same relevance in Perth

On the other hand, people in Brisbane actually knew who the Sharks were when it was being floated. It was still a horrible idea. Valleys Diehards are a foundational club of the sport too, but I wouldn’t be promoting sending them to Perth

That escalated quickly….
Talking about wiping the history books pre nrl might be a little out of touch in a thread involving historical qrl teams though…

It was the same in Melbourne 10 years ago, articles on the Storm would be found about six pages in under the netball results. No other NRL results, just a small fluff piece about Slater scoring a try. And any games scheduled on gem had an 80% chance of being replaced by sitcom reruns without notice.
The NRL can break into these markets, but it takes more investment then just relocating a side loved elsewhere

I dunno, that was the rationale behind the Titans predictions for success. 15 years later and they have the lowest reported members in the NRL (despite club records) and average crowds. In six months the Dolphins have nearly triple the members and the third highest home crowds. It seems that more then population is needed

I see. Well in that case QLD were robbed!! They were 10 minutes away from 12 in a row thanks to game 2 in 2014!!

Wasn’t meaning to dismiss his performances, just saying he’s built a good platform to carry it on against better competition coming up. I see how that sounded

Storm did have 40,000ish members last year and were in the top 3 for home crowds despite the difficulty for visiting supporters. Growth is very much happening (https://www.melbournestorm.com.au/news/2023/04/19/rugby-league-hitting-record-numbers-in-victoria/). I lived there for several years from ’11 and many people literally didn’t know what league was, I had workmates asking what our chances were against the All Blacks, making any dent there is massive accomplishment

I hate Thursday night games, but unfortunately they’re better then Monday games were. I know the article wants to reduce the season, but surely the obvious answer is to introduce an extra day into the week and have a three day weekend. Same amount of games but it isn’t impacted by the work week and keeps businesses happy. Surely everyone can get behind that

oh? never heard of it.
