I thought there was a good 20-minute stretch in the second where the Tillies dominated midfield- had that little bit of extra time to find feet with passes and break out when passing from the back after a goalkick, and were easily picking off English attempts to pass through. Credit to England for quickly recognising this and taking the midfield out of the equation- their long ball approach made us take the same in response much of the time on rebound.

Sam missile strikes with World Cup worldie but Matildas bow out as Lionesses roar into Final

Yeah, first half they weren’t great and ended up having to hoof it a fair bit, because of the intense midfield pressure. But they were still trying and found much more space in second half to either pass out when needed, or hit up an outlet for fast break. Fowler was brilliant at this, working the triangles and then turning inside to switch.
I thought it was much more the Poms who hoofed in the second half for hit and run when they started to lose the midfield. They did it very well though and were very effective, finding channels and hitting it low, early deep crosses too. Really worked out how best to make our backs unsettled- hence second goal.

Out of order comments striking again!

Six Points: Defending Josh Rachele, the Blues' unsung hero, and why the Dogs would be mad to sack Bevo

I counter that with the Dees having had only 2 players reach 300 games (Neitz & Jones)

Cracking read that Ben. You’ve nailed it for me- fear of losing is key to how Test cricket should be played, and the individual and team bravery will come through in many different ways in that context.

Why Bazball will never save Test cricket - and England didn't 'win' no matter what they claim

I was at that final too- coldest I’ve ever been. Had played soccer that arvo out at RMC with about 4 layers on! And the famous Raiders v Tigers snow game was the next day. What a weekend.

Two issues the Brumbies need to address urgently – plus one they can’t control at all

They do now actually- my Dees had played a few times twice well before playing Carlton for the first and only time in R22 last year. Pretty sure it’s only become a thing in the last few years, long after the NRL abandoned playing everyone else once first before double-ups.

Have the APL made the right call with the next stage of expansion?

Criminally underrated in Japan but probably too old now to move back to Europe. Would be well worth a shot for a Champo club, or NED/BEL with his current form.

Graham Arnold has turned the Socceroos into a genuinely exciting side

Oh, and you just use the old school hand-roller to select parts of a deck. That’s much narrower than the ride-on.

India face pitch doctoring claims over stunning photos of ‘selective’ watering as another Aussie star drops out

It might just have been curators having a laugh after the fact but I think I read it in Gideon’s On Warne that they had owned up to it.

India face pitch doctoring claims over stunning photos of ‘selective’ watering as another Aussie star drops out

It has happened before, sort of. Back in Warne’s day the curators in India would roll the crap out of the middle of the pitch to really flatten that down and reduce his impact, and leave the off and leg side pretty much alone. Didn’t affect Kumble as he never turned it anyway and his wrong-un pitching outside off was way more effective. And same for Harby, turning it in from off stump. But this was about favouring their bowlers rather than nullifying batsmen.

Well that would be absolutely ideal, but unfortunately FFA don’t do the WCQ draw. Unless we can find a few big brown paper bags to hand over to the AFC bigwigs…

Four more years: Arnie given new contract, but turns focus beyond Socceroos

Okon the Younger is a deadset gun- just signed with Benfica and will be playing for the Young Socceroos in the next few weeks. Big things expected.

Worries settle as Rogic signs Championship deal

Hrustic just moved onwards to Hellas Verona, got 20 minutes in the weekend’s loss to Lazio. Reckon he’ll get enough time to be right for the WC now.

gaah, wrong comment replying to!
How do you reckon your Bulldogs will go next year- bottom of the 8 a realistic target?

Experts Roar: Should NRL finals format be changed, number of teams reduced or expanded?

I quite like the idea posed by others of paring back the NRL comp to 17 rounds plus an 8 team finals (home and away across 2 seasons), and taking on our own version of the Challenge Cup to bulk out the year. I know the NSWRL is full of feeder/reserves, and the QRL has that too, but just rig the draw so you don’t play against your firsts as far as possible. Open up the early rounds to the prior year grand final teams from all the Groups in Country footy (including Canberra. Newy etc) and you’ll have a well proper comp.

Experts Roar: Should NRL finals format be changed, number of teams reduced or expanded?

Nah, Hagan’s idea is silly. What happens if you finish 3-4 and lose first week- no home final at any time for you. Why would you bother trying to finish 3-4? Sure you get the second chance but you’d want that home final first week at 5th spot, even if it is elimination.
It’s good as it is now if you keep the 1v4, 2v3 etc system.

Experts Roar: Should NRL finals format be changed, number of teams reduced or expanded?

Right, and have the NRL pay for the travel costs of all of the teams in Conference Not-Sydney please. And two weeks off for them before the finals to compensate for having to travel half the year while the Sydney teams just have to go to the other side of the city.
Stupid idea.

Experts Roar: Should NRL finals format be changed, number of teams reduced or expanded?

It’s ok- most people do. Particularly at NRL HQ.

What if? Rugby league’s sliding door moments – Part III, Super League

No Canberra, who along with the Ponies were the bedrock of Super League?

Noting that Freo result, I wonder if they’ll ever actually take up the first week of finals offer in the new bigger Cattery?

Suburban stadium playoff policy underlines why AFL is ahead of not-so-National Rugby League

I can see your argument but maybe this year wasn’t the one to do it- the Raiders in 8th had a record that most years would be 5th or even 4th.
But yeah, there has definitely in the recent past been 8th and 7th teams that were blown away in the finals having gassed it just trying to get there. Problem is top 6 just doesn’t work that well- see A-League. And too many dud games at the end of season.

It’s time for the NRL to ditch the top eight

Geelong playing at the MCG is a very different story. They always play home games against the big Melbourne clubs (Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon, Carlton and Hawthorn) at the G, not down at Kardinia, as a direct result of the potential crowd size being huge. Easter Monday v Hawthorn always gets 75k plus, regardless of the home side. They play the lower drawing and interstate teams at Kardinia, and first week finals v interstate teams as well. Yes the members can get a bit uppity and that’s part of why they are expanding Kardinia’s size, but the MCG arrangement won’t change. Crowd size is king and that’s how it should be. And privately, the Cats know that they have to be able win big games on the G to win the cup, so they embrace the arrangement.

They need to bring back Campo from retirement- he’s still got it, just named best player in the Canberra comp yet again.
