I don’t think our backline defence is going to improve in the space of a week. I thought Donaldson had a blinder, completely wrong footing me. But he’s not really a defensive 15, once the Fijians get through our first line of defence it’s a try.

Our strategy has to be completely keep it as tight as possible. We can beat them with our front 5, not our back 3.

This won’t be Eddie’s strategy, but we always need a kicker on the field. I would start with Isaac Fines and Ben Donaldson and then replace them at the 50-60 minute with Nic White and Kellaway. Or maybe the opposite. But whatever the case we need to have a goal kicker on the ground.

Five things we learned: 'F--king do your job' - Moment Skelton proved Eddie right, Wallabies' rivals put on show

I agreed with everything else above, but the following was a strange reading:

Nic White – 4.5
Came on early for the concussed McDermott, the Wallabies’ pace and tempo went away once White came on.

The pace and tempo went up very noticeably when Nic White came on. It might be argued the increased pace of the game didn’t actually suit the Wallabies since they didn’t convert the increased pace into points, but to say the pace and tempo went down would require not watching the game.

Player ratings: Skelton, Tupou Wallabies' best despite Donno's day out in World Cup opener

Whoever tops our group will probably play England with Farrell back as half. Argentina should be favourites to beat England without Farrell and top pool D.

But we are not even sure to get out of our group, one of us Fiji and Wales won’t, and currently Fiji are two places ahead of us in the international rankings so it could well be between us and Wales who gets knocked out.

CONFIRMED: Wallabies' two-decade first for RWC opener as Eddie explains Donaldson's selection

I think AAA played LH as a junior. I’d agree if Slipper got injured. But it would pretty much mean Tupou playing 80 minutes.

‘We’ve got to be better’: Rennie makes just one change but demands more from 'soft' Wallabies

To’omua was the one player I thought would be benched or left out. Over the last year his form has really dropped. I guess he is there as the old wise head because there is not a lot of experience in the rest of the backline.

‘We’ve got to be better’: Rennie makes just one change but demands more from 'soft' Wallabies

It’ll be hard to beat the French with only 14 men for half the game.

‘We’ve got to be better’: Rennie makes just one change but demands more from 'soft' Wallabies

He’s In the top three Aussie Scrumhalves, but will have to compete with Nic White to even get a start at the Brumbies. That’s not good

Joe Powell has more than just Super Rugby wins to worry about this season

My brother in law invited me to the opening Brumbies vs Reds game. I’m predicting whoever wins that game will win the Australian conference.

Reds continue good pre-season form

Smith and Labuschagne came in at a situation, shit we need at least a big century and then still another 50. They did this at a run a ball. Something not to be sniffed at. Agar came in twice in difficult situations. Everyone around him was getting out, and he needed to score at over two runs a ball. So you can’t really blame him for not being even close to that level of batsman. But we have batsman who can.

Three players Australia must select to tour South Africa

There’s no way Agar would be in the T20 team, although he is quite economical as a bowler. Starting the tail/allrounders at 4 is suicidal. Number 3 is Chris Lynn with everyone else dropped down one pos.

I don’t think Maxwell was not selected. He said he was suffering from mental health issues around the time when the selections were made. The selectors seemed to have been respectful of this. The team selected was a weak one, but young. It wasn’t the strongest team, but it was obviously selected with the 2023 World Cup in mind. And it answered some questions. Zampa, probably. Turner not. Agar, didn’t rule himself out (which surprised me).

Agar is definitely not an allrounder. He’s a bowler, and bowled pretty economically, but Zampa was by a distance the better bowler of the two of them.

Five things we learnt from India vs Australia

Although I would agree with the selfishness thing. When the run rate was as high as it was, I found it very frustrating that Steve Smith turned many two’s into singles. Maybe he is not as athletic as someone like Maxwell, but we were losing 1-2 runs an over because he wasn’t prepared to turn a single into a fairly safe two.

Five things we learnt from India vs Australia

I’d disagree with number 4. Having 2 accumulators in the team, Smith and Labuschagne, is not a problem. They can both accumulate at a run a ball and make 50’s / centuries. They were not the problem. But they probably shouldn’t be batting together, each needs a big batsman as a partner. If our openers don’t smash the hell out of the ball, after Smith and Labuschagne, we didn’t have anyone capable of accelerating. The Indian bowlers were good enough to keep Cary under a run a ball. Turner was good for about 4 runs. And Agar was couldn’t even manage a run a ball when pinch hitting was required.

Five things we learnt from India vs Australia

He averages about 20 with the bat, so can’t be classed as a batting allrounder.

It’s hard to compare Larkham to anyone. His highlights real isn’t all that great. He wasn’t individually brilliant. He was a bit average. However he made every player outside of him brilliant. If there was a miscount on the left or right he would immediately throw the ball that side. If Mortlock was running at a 50cm hole in the defensive line he would pick it and throw a centimeter perfect pass for Mortlock to run at that hole. If our defense had a 50cm hole he’d notice it quickly and re-arrange our defense.

The 80/20 effect is true. In his last year the Brumbies won 80% of games he played in and 20% of the games he was injured.

Can Isaac Lucas become the new Stephen Larkham?

When we had to score 340 we needed someone to score close to a century and he did it at about a run a ball. His role is as an accumulator. It was the other batsmen (Labuschagne aside) that were the problem. if he takes time to get is eye in, good for him.

Impressive India set up ODI series decider against Australia

Based on current form there’s going to be a lot of competition for the all-rounder role come the WC. Maxwell, Mitch Marsh and Stoinis all putting their hands up.

Glenn Maxwell's ODI axing could boost Australia's World Cup hopes

With Lyon, plus La Bousch and Smith as potential rest bowlers, it’s hard to make a place for a bowling all rounder, such as Mitch Marsh. Ironically, Smith’s concussion, and Labuschagnes replacement, pretty much ended his international career.

Could Mitch Marsh's best years still be ahead?

Jake ball was actually a pretty sensible way to play. Kick the shit out of the ball when in your own red zone, and attack when you are in their green zone. I don’t think Cheika was a bad coach, his results with the Waratahs and overseas were pretty impressive, as was 2015. But his refusal to play strategic “jake-ball” rugby was his downfall. It wasn’t the Australian way as he kept on saying, it was just playing dumb rugby, trying to run out of your own 22.

How Stephen Larkham is finding his feet at Munster

Larkham was still pretty green when selected as the Brumbies coach and then the Wallabies attack coach. He is a very smart guy and will probably be a great coach. In 10 years time. Graham Henry wasn’t born a great coach, he spent 20 years coaching at school levels before he coached NZ. Eddie Jones was a vastly better coach for Japan and now England than he was 15 years earlier in Oz.

The idea that having been coached can make someone a good coach a year later is simply wrong. The top coaches are like good wines or whiskies, and improve as they age. When Larkham has 10-15 years of international coaching experience under his belt is when we should start putting him into the equation for a Wallabies coaching role. Not even necessarily international, Henry was able to build up from junior level. But that experience was what made him one of the worlds top coaches.

How Stephen Larkham is finding his feet at Munster

Head obviously has massive talent, but is somewhat immature. I only followed the NZ test via cricinfo commentary, but with 10 overs under lights to go before the close, the obvious strategy should have been to play fairly conservatively to get through the next day. I think 3rd or 4th ball he hit a 4 that the cricinfo commentators described as “very brave”. ie. a two sided compliment. A ball or two later he got out trying another “brave” shot.

The good thing is that talent is something you can’t train, you have it or you don’t, but maturity is something that can be trained and will come.

It’s all in the Head for Australia’s talented number six

I don’t think there is any intention to win the series. We are sending a weak team. But a very young team. I think it is purely a strategic decision to see how our younger players can perform against the best (or second best) one day team in the world.

A remarkable changing of Australia's ODI guard

SoK has been our best spin bowler for the past 15 years. I think his non-selection is purely a personality difference and nothing to do with his form. He’s reaching the end of his career, but even this year I think he still has the best spin bowling stats.

A remarkable changing of Australia's ODI guard

I’d hardly call this the strongest squad Australia have played between world cups, pretty much the complete opposite. It’s fairly young, so obviously looking to build the next generation of players, but also probably one of the weakest squads we’ve sent overseas. Two spinners who are 20/20 specialists but not great in ODI at domestic level, plus Ashton Turner who is similar as a 20/20 batsman, and Handscomb and Carey, who are good future possibilities, but still young and developing. This is a young team, that hopefully will develop towards the next World Cup, but a long way from a good team.
