Finally some commonsense on that call. It wasn’t even a chargedown. He brushed SJ’s ankle and then SJ goes down simulating absolute agony, clutching his shin when there was no contact with his shin. He then magically recovers and runs over to kick the penalty goal. Absolute rubbish decision from a pretty useless referee who played to the crowd. The only thing keeping NZ in the game were the constant 6-Agains. As usual, Manly couldn’t get one for all money. As with all the rule changes in the NRL, they throw a blanket over the problem and leave no room in the interpretation for any kind of discretion. It’s like the 7 tackle set. Teams are afraid to attempt FG’s because if they miss, it’s 7 tackles from the 20. The rule was brought in to stop teams kicking the ball dead on purpose to slow down the play and use negative strategies. Attempting a FG to win a game is not negative play. Running in a straight line to attempt a chargedown is not negative or dangerous play. Absolutely ridiculous. Was neither foul play nor a dangerous tackle and SJ hammed up the acting to win the penalty.

DCE and Johnson put on masterclass as Warriors and Manly can't be split after controversial Bunker call

After the disgustingly biased refereeing of the All Blacks in 2011 against the French, Joubert deserved all he copped and a whole lot more. His performance in the final was nothing short of disgraceful. I never rated him as a referee. In fact the only one that has ever had my respect would have to be Wayne Barnes. Nigel Owens made some glaring mistakes in the First Half of the 2015 final that pretty much put the AB’s out of our reach, despite our comeback.

I actually think they were not good enough. Very much a men against boys against a pretty ordinary Welsh team who waited for the infringements and took the 3 points on offer. They won’t go any further

On current rankings we will be in a Pool with two heavyweights.this could spell the end of us reaching a quarter final next WC too

'Bloody disappointed: Wallabies OUT of World Cup as nation to miss finals for first time, Eddie fights for survival

Agreed, but was it really a “pool of death”? England were terrible and didn’t even get out of the Pool at home. Top spot meant Scotland and Argentina and avoiding Springboks or All Blacks until the final. We should have lost to Scotland, let’s not forget, but benefited from a dubious call against the Scots at the end, not to mention they were yellow carded in the First Half. All that and we still only won 35-33

The knee-jerk sacking of Rennie not long after appointment, just before a WC, that RA still has to pay, smacks of an organisation that is desperate and unprofessional. I suspect RA has the answer. They just don’t want to put the organisation under a microscope as it would mean examining the colossal waste of money on trimmings and the leaches who constitute the fat of the organisation. If the culture is such that EJ was confident in spending $1M on psychologists, then that is a very big part of the problem. We can all talk about fostering ties with the Pacific nations and developing developing talent rather than simply poaching it. We can talk about spending on grass roots rugby at the local and country level. We can talk about players being veing selected on merit and not on the basis of whether they are at grammar or private school. We can talk about appointments on basis of ability and not post codes. It won’t happen of course. If it was going to, it would have happened after we lost five in a row to England culminating in a RWC Final loss at home in 2003. Unfortunately, an easy draw to the final in 2015 papered over the glaring cracks, and in a way, we should be thankful for this first ever group stage exit with a solitary win over Georgia. It won’t change anything, however RA can’t pretend all is good. That is a victory of some sort

Result! We qualified and NZ didn’t. If only that could happen in the rugby!

'Something special about this group': Raso brace seals victory over Olympic champions as Matildas through to round of 16

Why is it 100 too many? Is this an indightment of the low level of confidence we have in our batsmen? The lack of confidence is well-founded based on this series in particular. However, as professionals, any batsman worth his dollars should rub his hands together and embrace two full days on a great batting wicket to chase what still might be under 400. 4/250 at end of Day 4 means a chase of 150 at less than two runs an over on the last day. That is extremely gettable given how far down we bat. This could be Warner’s Ashes swansong, Kharwaja propping up the other end, laying the platform for Smith and Labs to consolidate. With enough runs on the board, that may well leave Head and Marsh the freedom for the fireworks they have already shown they are capable of this series. To be honest, if they can’t get 400 in six sessions on a flat deck with tired bowlers at the end of long series, then there is something seriously wrong with Australian cricket. But then, given how disrespectfully the Sheffield Shield is treated as a breeding ground for selection, there will be no need to look for excuses should we fail tomorrow.

Aussies Bazballed again as Root, Bairstow and Crawley power England towards series-levelling win

Almost two full days on a good batting wicket to chase what will probably be 400? I’m pretty happy with that. If we can go to Day 5 at 4/250 then the test is ours. Ashes in the bank. Should be batting with no pressure. Not bazball ridiculous batting, but no pressure. Looking forward to the chase.

Aussies Bazballed again as Root, Bairstow and Crawley power England towards series-levelling win

yes but Stokes job is safe for now if he learns from it. if Cummins rocks up to the Oval resuming the bouncer war with a defensive field defending nothing then he needs to be replaced as captain. never should have been captain. his bowling has suffered and he doesn’t look like he is enjoying himself nearly as much as before. catapulted in after Paine resigned, with Paine there only because Warner and Smith are a pair of cheats.

All eyes on the skies as Labuschagne ton, Manchester rain gives Aussies a shot at great escape

spot on! you don’t bat on until nearly 600 when there is heavy rain forecast.

All eyes on the skies as Labuschagne ton, Manchester rain gives Aussies a shot at great escape

but we may not have batted as well had we been under more pressure the day before. I’m seriously glad England waited until they were bowled out.

terribly costly and a total brain fade by Stokes and co…thankfully!!

For sure. that’s what getting your eye in is all about. and the English were looking tired. wood is super quick but it takes a toll. English traditionally have not taken great care of their speedsters in the past. Wood has been off. Archer disappeared off the radar with injury after threatening to destroy our top order and terrorise our low order.

looks like Day 5 will be a total washout. 90 to 95% chance of rain all day long. annoying that Marnus had to play that cut and get out when he did. as always, he does the hard work and then gets out. close to the end of the day. that wasn’t the shot he should have been playing. we needed a Crawley 189.

Love it!
Saturday. Heavy rain
Sunday. Heavy rain
Monday. Light rain changing to sunny intervals late morning.

Not really. Stokes, McCullum and co talked it up themselves, nobody else.

Why? Is it a constant reminder that you don’t have any? 😂

Don’t forget the fake injuries so bowlers could go off for showers, massages and change of clothes, circa 2005.

'Incredibly proud' Bairstow's think of the kiddies sledge for Aussies over that stumping

Once again, classless…boorish. whatever your age, plenty of growing up to do

Bairstow 99, Wood's triple strike crush Aussies as series hangs on incoming Manchester downpour

Thank you for providing the empirical evidence regarding English supporters being both classless and boorish. You have both in abundance.

Bairstow 99, Wood's triple strike crush Aussies as series hangs on incoming Manchester downpour

Yes, but as Australians, we don’t pretend to be the yardstick of what is in the spirit of cricket, etc. Secondly, it doesn’t take away from the fact that their crowds have been extremely badly behaved. I don’t recall an Englishman challenged like our players were at Lords.

Bairstow 99, Wood's triple strike crush Aussies as series hangs on incoming Manchester downpour

Absolute hypocrites. Terrible losers and even worse winners. English crowds have been boorish and classless for the most part. I don’t know how long I had to hear about England and their victory in 2005, forgetting that Warne nearly beat them on his own, and had McGrath played all five tests, it most likely would have been 4 or 5-nil. All the more reason to want to hold on for a draw and retain the Urn. That was always the first objective. None of this would have happened had we dropped Warner and added Nesser. Bag of wickets and 176 in England, but no, let’s pick and stick.

Bairstow 99, Wood's triple strike crush Aussies as series hangs on incoming Manchester downpour

Rain looking like a real saviour as 90% chance and heavy downpour forecast for all of Days 4 and 5. Cummins will have to be on guard as officials will look for every opportunity to get us out there on what will turn into an unplayable pitch with the weather.

Bairstow 99, Wood's triple strike crush Aussies as series hangs on incoming Manchester downpour

Yes. Ridiculous sensationalism. The series turned on England choosing Wood and Woakes. We picked an all-pace attack and then started with the rubbish field placings and bouncer war again. Totally flat batting pitches and we try and bounce England out of the game. Once, twice, thrice. Worked once at Lords and we have stuck to it in the absence of wanting to toil for wickets. I do hope for rain as England are the absolute worst winners in the world. Stokes is the epitome of arrogance, rather unjustifiably considering his average. Unfortunately the baffling dedication to a plan with no plan for the last three tests has invited England back. I’m happy with retaining the Ashes and I’ll happily take an escape from Old Trafford. If England can scheme a draw in 2009 with Panesar and Anderson changing their gloves every five minutes then I’ll take the weather over gamesmanship every day of the week. Pity we are making Wood look like a world beater with our inept batting. It really is a pathetic rearguard. Even more hopeless than our first innings where top scores of 51 and limping to 317 lost us any chance of victory.
