Except that it isn’t one day. Its three straight tests where he has persisted with defensive fields that actually defend against nothing, short-pitched bowling as the main strategy as opposed to a shock strategy and using his second tier bowlers piecemeal. He misused Murphy at Headingly. He was then dropped for Green when in reality, Warner should have been dropped for Nesser and Murphy retain his place. He almost lost us Lords with an approach to buy wickets once things got challenging and he has learnt nothing to change the approach here. We should have been attacking England with a regulation field, not four boundary riders.

Totally crazy. Green is rubbish

Renshaw has had more than his fair share of chances. He is not top level material. Bancroft the same

If Cummins gives Boland the ball, we are a chance. I forgot he was playing when Cummins was bowling himself constantly. Yes he took 6 wickets but he bought the last few and both himself and Starc leaked runs in the process. That 100 runs we should have been leading by has really cosy us. Predictable tactics tomorrow. Short-pitched rubbish that the top order will flay to all parts of the ground while setting defensive fields that allow England a single whenever they want one. Still, there is a chance. In 2005 we had two and a half days to chase 282 and failed…just. should have been chasing a lot less but let Flintoff smash a ton and rescue England. I hope we don’t lose the Ashes as this is just not a great English team. This test, they have played bad, but we have been worse

Definitely. Conditions were made for Boland. Cummins wasted the new ball. Test has followed predictable pattern. Another middle order collapse for a pathetic 224 and then wayward bowling to allow England to whittle off 27 runs in just 5 overs.

What a joke! Day should have been called off. Fading light at 5pm and the officials bust a gut to get us out there and give England two hours to bowl us out. The most satisfying thing if we manage to come home with the Ashes still in our possession is that England and the officials have done everything in their power to scheme an England victory and it won’t be enough.

Our biggest chance is the rain forecast at 11am for the rest of the day. Like the Soviets at Moscow in 1941, General Weather to the rescue.

SevenTEENth heaven: Warner Broad's bunny again as Smith, Marnus brain fades leave Ashes in Marsh's hands

They have done that all series. Line and length. On the stumps. When England bowled us out for 60 in 2015, they admitted the tactic was to bowl very full outside offstump to attract a knick behind or very full on the stumps. Miss and you’re bowled. And that is what happened, in just under 20 overs. You would think a bowling attack that comes from the same country as Glenn McGrath would take a few hints on how to negotiate tailenders. Blocked, blocked, blocked, MISSSED! Bowled. MISSED! LBW.

100%. Not sure what is the bigger mystery, why have Smith and Marnus found Ali harder to negotiate than pronouncing Labushagne, or how the hell has Ali claimed 200 wickets in test cricket?

I don’t think the two need to be mutually exclusive, although different circumstances. Warner is Broad’s Bunny, whereas Marnus keeps getting good starts and then throws his wicket away, on this series at least. Marnus is too good a batsman to sell his scalp cheaply. Double that for Smith.

Umpires to the rescue of England again. This is the problem I have with DRS. The umpire gives it out, batsman reviews, if it’s close but hitting, umpires call and he’s out. The reverse if umpire gives it not out. Dharmasena was determined to not give Stokes out, same as his ridiculously incompetent colleague in 2019. As far as I could see, both were absolutely plumb and those dubious not out calls decided the test in 2019 and have altered the dynamic at the same ground in 2023. Its not good enough from the officials.

All the more reason to recall him with a warning to not stray out of his crease between deliveries.

'Worst thing I’ve ever seen in cricket': Broad, McCullum whinge about Bairstow drama but McDonald returns serve

Thing is though that Starc was lazy. The laws do state ball can’t cone in contact with the ground until you’ve stopped. I saw what you saw, that Starc cleanly and clearly caught the ball for a second or two and then skidded the ball along the ground. No bobble, no release from hand, but the rules state that it can’t be given. With Bairstow I also agree the rules were followed. He left his crease before the call of Over. It was first touted as a Run Out but couldn’t be given as Bairstow not attempting a run. It was then adjudicated as a Stumping. By the letter of the law it was a Stumping but I think he should have been recalled. I like to think we have more integrity than that, and given that Bairstow thought the play was over and the over complete, I would have thought Cummins would have recalled him. He may come to regret working this play out with Carey in the way Chappell later regretted directing his brother to bowl underarm to the Kiwi’s.
