Blues in a bit of strife here, rookie prop, busted, reserve grade back row, most of the back line playing out of position (as usual). Bhagavad Brad has lost his marbles.

REVEALED: NSW Blues and Queensland Maroons teams for State of Origin 1

I played about 20 years myself. I’ve heard it all on the field, so I know the language can be colourful. I’m not suggesting we hear everything that is said, more just that I don’t think we need every second of the game saturated with the amplification and hyperbole. After a whistle is blown, complete silence from commentators, refs are turned up, hear the call and the discussion, when commentators return, they discuss the play not the call.

The uncomfortable truth about the NRL’s horrible media coverage

“Have they got research that says they’re giving punters what they want.”

I think this is a point worthy of discussion. When the cricket is broadcast from England, there are long lulls of quiet, no banal banter or pointless drivel (until Warne comes back on). Would it be worthwhile trialling a similar approach. Turn up ref’s mics, hear more on-field player chat, maybe hear chat between coach and bench, tone down the running commentary and just hear the game in it’s more ‘natural’ state. The hits, the calls, the back and forth between refs, teammates and opposition. The odd sideline comment about an injury, or a play or the state of the game. Maybe some chat about the ‘thinking’ behind the play as it unfolds “they’ve two-passed to the open 70 to engage the prop and hooker, they’ll take one short side in behind the markers to drag the open side A defender in, then they’ll spread it open with the fullback acting as a third receiver to play for the overlap”, actual tactical discussion instead of just ‘here’s Bateman, on to Whitehead, Sezer coming under’ aka the stuff we can plainly see. I can’t watch the game with commentary any more. I put on music and play the game on mute. Maybe Fox could have a channel option that switches between regular commentary and none to trial. I don’t know, but I’m sick of it too.

Fifita is twice the grub of Smith, McGuire, Slater and maybe, maybe, JWH. He’s not the only school of hard knocks, troubled past, redemption story in the game, but he’s most visibly the dirtiest. Spare me the ‘decisions in the heat of battle’ harangue, if he wants to be a leader he needs to clean his act up and get the garbage out of his game. Deputising beneath Gallen might make that a harder task for Andrew.

Fifita gets it wrong, but he's not the first or last

On two of your points: I think Melbourne have to say ‘thanks but no thanks’ to Croft and move Hughes to 7 alongside Munster and play Papa at 1. Croft has definitely improved these last few weeks and got Stimson right into the game on Sunday, but he’s not the best pick. The other, regarding Ethan Lowe, I think that the fuss around Hess was more his undoing at the Cowboys. His form never waned that much in my opinion, but he didn’t have the hype that Hess did and was dropped. He will have the last laugh as Hess’s potential isn’t all it was made out to be and Lowe might have locked in a spot in the Qld 17 and in this year’s finals series.

Eight talking points from NRL Round 18

I just don’t know about the comment “If a Wighton pass doesn’t get intercepted by Dane Gagai the result could have easily gone the other way..” and Buzz & co. all week saying there was only an intercept in it. If there’s only an intercept in it, then there was only an inch in it for Oates’ no try, only a millimetre in it for Napa’s no try, only one pass in it for the Munster/Chambers break, only the Fox in it for the pass over the top off the scrum. There was more than just that one moment in the game so using it to argue against changes is a fairly fickle argument.

Was that a collective sigh of relief we heard from Kevvie and Will after Latrell's omission?

My tip: Cleary will continue to not live up to the hype. You heard it here first.

The Roar's NRL expert tips and predictions: Round 14

Strong mail Bird will go back to the Shire and SJ will end up in Brisbane.

Sharks most likely destination for Shaun Johnson

Tedesco was outstanding. I get it that there has to be a changing of the guard at some point, but I would’ve loved to have seen how the Aus team played if Teddy (and Latrell) ever had the opportunity to run off Smith, Cronk and JT. The Roos were still a bit clunky in patches, a few poor defensive reads and rudderless attacking plays, but starting to gel more. I’m still waiting for the candid camera to pop out and say “gotcha!!” in regards to Woods’ selection.

Tedesco stars as Kangaroos topple Tonga in historical match

I like the look of the Broncos. Ali is a great ballplayer and Breayley is an excellent dummyhalf. Her service is better than most in the NRL, she has a great running game and tackles well. Their back three is very strong and Baker at fullback is a point of difference as she reads the game exceptionally well, has a turn of speed, a great passing game and is an excellent defender. The back row is tough and the bench is strong.

Carn the Broncos.

Who will play in the NRLW Grand Final?

Far less painful than taking it on the spine.

Roosters' Mitchell takes finals ban on chin

Agreed. Fifita could play centre too. He’s very quick.

Nine talking points from NRL Round 25

You should go back through all your lists and see if you have a team of the year based on these articles. Or not. Whatever. Up to you.

NRL team of the week Round 25

The recent Storm loss to the Rabbits is pure mind games. The Storm will win the GF this year.

It’s the business end: Here are the contenders and the pretenders

+ a in-form Cook.

Eight talking points NRL Round 18

Best team imo:

Ponga/Slater
Holmes
GI
Chambers
Gagai
Munster
Hunt
Wallace
Macca
Moose
Papa
Fus
Arrow

Which leaves
Napa
Hess
Cooper
Ponga (if Slater’s fit)
Glasby (If Slater’s not)

I think we’ve messed up showing loyalty to some of the game one team.

Queensland Origin 2 team expert reaction: Can Queensland rebound? We’ve seen it before

I don’t know which is more amusing, the fact that it still occurs, or the fact that New South Welshman still get upset about it.

Who will play for the New South Wales Blues?

All but 3 NSW players are in teams currently in the top 8. QLD have picked 8 players in teams outside the top 8. There are ‘some’ arguments for underdog status.

Who will play for the New South Wales Blues?

They’re bottom on the list of penalties received and conceded. 16th out of 16.

What would be Queensland's dream Blues team?

Yeah tbh, the only reason I put him in there was due to being the incumbent captain, basically going against the rest of my selections. Crichton probably merits selection before Cordner on current form, followed by Jackson.

Can NSW fans handle an Origin ‘rebuild’?

Picking on current form:

1. Dufty
2. JAC
3. Aitken
4. Roberts
5. Cotric
6. Green
7. Maloney
8. Vaughn
9. Cook
10. RCG
11. Frizell
12. Cordner
13. JDB
14. Peachey
15. Jurbo
16. Sims
17. Sutton

Call me crazy, but there needs to be a significant change.

Can NSW fans handle an Origin ‘rebuild’?

How the hell does JWH not get pinged for lifting the elbow? He does it every time. Every. Single. Run.

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters: NRL live scores, blog

I think teams should get bonus points for scoring off a set play from a scrum.

Or get the option to kick from in front.

Rugby league is not a rubbish game, it doesn't know what it is

The proof is outlined in the article I would have thought: “After bringing a long-awaited premiership to Townsville in 2015 and taking the side to the grand final last year… Green has taken North Queensland to the finals every year since the beginning of his tenure in 2014.”
