What is amazing is that the Gold Coast Suns have achieved the level of membership and attendance at games that they have, despite the poor on field performance for many years. When the Suns finally do achieve strong on field performance, watch the membership and attendance go up even further.
As a personal example, I live in Southeast Queensland and was an inaugural member of the Gold Coast Suns. However, to be honest, years of poor onfield performance put me off. Yet, metricon stadium is a great boutique stadium and public access to the stadium for me by train is very convenient, so when the Suns do give me a reason to get excited by better on field performance, I’ll be back.

As a South East Queensland AFL fan, I would love to be more enthusiastic about the Suns, as I think many others would also be. But I’m tired of the years of poor performance on field. If they could at least, finally, get to mid table, the crowds will come. I never understood why the Suns’ management thought Stuart Dew would be the saviour of the team.

It may be hard for non-Suns supporters to understand how much supporters of this team have suffered. This team has NEVER made finals. The fairest test of the success of AFL on the Gold Coast will be if the suns have a run of on-field success, including a few years in the finals, and we see how attendance and membership grows. I predict with on field success, both attendance and membership will grow, and grow more than people outside of Gold Coast might expect.
