Thanks again Chris for lending weight to my argument by discrediting yourself.

Comparing the WC or organising a WC with socialism?

The ultimate World Cup stadium solution

I agree with Vinay, I don’t think Aljay’s views hold much water.

Taylor has always been a bit of a cricket romantic, I don’t particularly like him in the commentary box but you can tell that he knows his stuff, he knows history and he knew just how important that milestone was to Australian’s.

That he elected not to surpass it is for mine what cricket is all about, in what other sport would you expect such humbleness? He knew he was nothing on Sir Donald, everyone did and not breaking his record was a very honourable thing to do.

For all of Hayden’s 380 I can’t help but feel it was arrogance that pushed him past this mark, he scored them against Zimbabwe on a flat track when he really shouldn’t have – I really lost respect for him that day.

The truth on why Taylor didn't overtake The Don

Thankyou Chris, for justifying my argument. It doesn’t matter if you’re an expert engineer, that is only ONE aspect out of hundreds to be considered, this is a multi-billon dollar event that needs to be planned right down to the last detail which means they need a few more experts than an engineer.

An expert in common sense probably won’t help a great deal either unlesss you know a lot about infrastructure, transport, building hotels, upgrading roads and have the ability to plan it all, I think there was an opening over at Cricket Australia though for someone with your skills.

The ultimate World Cup stadium solution

Wow, that is a pretty big call there, hope you feel better now that you got that off your chest.

Have you actually followed these articles for the last week? I think not.

The ultimate World Cup stadium solution

“New Zealand has managed to do what over a hundred other teams have failed to do and they did it with next to no competition with barely any english premiership players and a team full of part timers and phoenix players so Ai believe their feat is all the more worthwhile.” – how am I making the argument suit myself? You’re talking up the All Whites and marvelling at their use of domestic players which is utter rubbish, the domestic players are well and truly the exception.

I’m not going to bother retaliating to your petty comments, that you try to call me childish for using facts, well it shows a lot.

I’ve seen some of your brilliant work over on another thread, attempting to make some ridiculous point against Greg Russell whose intellect and knowledge make you look stupid and I’ll note that you couldn’t even spell Ryan NELSEN correctly which is probably an indicator of your footballing knowledge.

You don’t watch a lot of German football, that is apparent from your comment as the stereotypes do have a basis but that is the 70s, that is no longer the German team, they are made up of a mixture of just about everything, where once it was Müller and Maier it’s now name’s you’d associate with Polish plumbers and the bartender at the Mexican joint.

What is efficient about Gomez? Marin has no brilliant organizational qualities, neither does Özil. Perhaps that’s made up for by the oh so German qualities of Aaron Hunt or Piotr Trochowski?

Now we know our World Cup opponents, let's prepare

What is there to explain with Auckland City?! They don’t make up the numbers for the All Whites, (they have ONE player who spent a large part of his career and Europe) and that is what your initial comment was about, just how amazing they were to make the WC.

And how did they make the WCC? Oh my god. Europe sends one representative. South America sends one and so on and so on so Auckland’s strongest competition is coming from Samoa or some other little pissant island. OF COURSE a NZ team made the WCC.

I have no problem congratulating NZ, I’ve said countless times that for such a small nation they consistenly punch above their weight but Australia is no different, in fact while Australia has a larger population, to give them a higher chance of being successful, they have had bigger obstacles ie. distance, infrastructure, the presence of THREE football codes.

Co-host Football World Cup with New Zealand

No, by all means comment, I’m saying that it is totally pointless.

Your opinions on the Henry handball or the European betting scandal, that’s where internet Users can truly made themselves heard, tangible things but this is BIG business, like anyone here has any idea about the aspects that are involved.

It’s a total waste of time reading these articles and they multiply by the day.

The ultimate World Cup stadium solution

“Typically, the Germans will be strong, organized, efficient and ready to capitalize on errors” – not to mention blonde haired with blue eyes. The Germans aren’t strong, Australia are a far more combative an physical team because Germany possesses plenty of quality on the ball.

Organised. Well only at a national team level, if the German’s bring their club form with them there is every chance if Australia get an early goal that they’d wipe the floor with them.

‘Efficient’ – How does efficient apply in footballing terms? The only thing I can think of is not wasting chances but Germany aren’t great at that, Podolski has a great record at an international level but I’ve seen both him and Klose miss plenty of easy chances, neither are what one would call ‘lethal’.

My only hope is that they schedule one game against a minnow, leave Cahill out and play McDonald up front with another striker, give him those elements and he will have the best possible chance of breaking his drought which is vital, I wouldn’t want him going into a WC with still no goals next to his name.

Now we know our World Cup opponents, let's prepare

“Everyone has seen the articles coming out at the moment regarding the use of the MCG, and more particularly, Docklands Stadium as World Cup venues and the impact it will have on the AFL season.” – Why couldn’t you just stop there?

Why do Roarer’s feel the need to try and solve this issue? It’s not like any of us have any idea and yet the comments run into the thousands and every day there are new posts from the crowd and the journo’s on this issue, how to get it to work, what the benefits are blah blah blah.

You won’t be able to write any “Ultimate World Cup Stadium Solution”s in a Roar article, you’d need an army of people to consider the aspects of planning, finances, transport, infrastructure, planning etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

There are people doing this for a job, hopefully qualified people so why do we need to bother trying to come up with a solution when it’s impossible for you to do anything more than scratch the surface?

“while improvements to stadiums in Adelaide and Perth would present the NRL with an opportunity to move into those markets after the tournament ended.” – As the old AFL ad goes; ‘I’d like to see that’. NRL will never survive in either city, in Adelaide it would be an absolute death sentence for any club, wouldn’t last 3 years.

Pros and cons of World Cup bid for NRL, AFL

This is the list of steps to bring the WC to Aus?

Where are numbers 7-750?

The steps to bring the World Cup to Australia

The Auckland City player you are probably referring to is Ivan Vicelich who played for a number of years in the Netherlands – more experience than most of the rest of the team and apart from that, how many players do they use from NZ on a regular basis?

Co-host Football World Cup with New Zealand

We’re talking about cricket. Does Australia buy their cricketers?

What have been the best Test matches ever?

Australia qualified via the Oceania route, I’m not discounting it, it’s simply not as amazing and rare as you might like to think. Everything you said applies to Australia ‘mate’ so I don’t see what your point is yet again.

Asia ARE high and mighty, Australia joining them has done nothing for their competition, Australia just rolled into the WC this time around but it hasn’t improved Australian or AFC standards, it’s just a lot easier when you don’t have to play the 5th ranked South American’s.

And NZ isn’t made up of part-timers. They’ve got a number of players in Britain, the Blackburn Rovers captain, half the Phoenix team which is part of the A-League (all Pro’s), a couple playing in the MLS and just a couple of players who play domestically.

Co-host Football World Cup with New Zealand

Australia got to the same place while in Oceania so what’s your point? That Asia has made them better? No, all the Australian players are playing in Europe, they don’t need to play Bahrain or Qatar to improve, they would learn more against English second tier teams.

NZ is the same. All that Asia offers is an easier route to the WC and some additional revenue but it won’t improve the football side of things a great deal.

“you inadvertently give the idea merit. It appears that you repeatedly need to keep slamming the idea for fear of someone taking the idea seriously.” – Sure I do.

I don’t care if anyone takes this seriously but let them, I don’t care, my comments are directed at you and your idea, no-one else and still, your idea is rubbish.

“And if Geelong cant afford it, well, this is what the salary cap is for – spreading the talent around the competition, and preventing dynasties.”

No, that is the inherent problem with the salary cap. No-one down at Geelong will want to see him go and that he might have to is utterly ridiculous.

All the salary cap does is ruin the great players careers. Ablett deserves a fortune more than his peers but he won’t be paid it, he might go down in history as being the greatest player of his generation yet he earns the same sort of money as Fevola et al.

Players careers are only so long, they should be able to maximise their earning potential for the duration of that time, that they can’t shows the biggest flaw in the AFL and if they want the game to stay as the number one sport they’re going to need to come up with a solution to entice people to become professional’s.

As it stands they train ridiculously hard, play a game that takes an incredible amount of the body and are compensated with meagre wages when compared to any other professional sport.

The AFL shouldn’t discourage dynasties, on the contrary, they should be trying to have clubs build a history, you do that by winning multiple flags, not making the competition so even that the flag changes hands every year.

Was Gary Ablett out of line meeting with Gold Coast?

Well Vinay, it would certainly be interesting if he did get a bit of a run-out but then there is the dilemman, who makes way?

Watson will most likely retain his spot in the side but I think most people agree that he isn’t the opener Australia is looking for which is somewhat strange in my opinion as Aus have Jacques, Hughes, Warner and Katich who are all capable of opening, why do we need to add extra pressure on to an all-rounder who isn’t cut out for that role anyway?

I’d like to see North retained, I like his technique and I think he will be a solid player for a number of years to come whereas Hussey (who is pushing 35) has been given far too many opportunities and what the hell is he doing batting at 4 anyway? He’s a 6/7, I feel like Clarke is shirking some responsibility, he should be coming in at 4 and building the Australian innings, Hussey is the kind of player to finish one off.

Anyway Vinay, why North and not Hussey? And where does Smith slot in? My key stats for this:

*North – 30.5 years old – 9 tests with 3 hundreds – century every third test (plus he is a good bowler)
*Hussey – 34.5 years old – 44 Tests with 10 hundreds – century/4.4 Tests .

Lamenting the end of a great cricketing era

“as for the so-called ‘freud of football’, cahill was once more of an attacking midfielder but it is moyes who has developed him into a striker of sorts rather than him affording cahill any luxury… to intimate cahill is ‘lucky’ smacks of an agenda that some rigorous analysis could purge… i guess its up to the ‘freud of football’ to seek the appropriate guidance…”

I know what Cahill was, I’ve seen him play since his Millwall days and clearly remember him in the FA Cup Final against Man United, he was the only player who looked like he could compete at that level.

But even back then he was seen as an attacking/centre midfielder who was good going forward but mediocre in the middle, in his time at Everton he pushed forward further, sort of ‘in the hole’ but then again not really as he is not a playmaker so all he really did was get in Arteta’s (who by the way is far better than Cahill – yes I’m looking at you David) way, so he went ahead of Arteta but still didn’t play as a genuine striker, he doesn’t play off the shoulder and he doesn’t play just in behind, he’s plays in a hole in front of the hole.

He roams and he does this because his all-round skills aren’t good enough for him to be a genuine striker or a genuine number 10. He is given freedom because that is the best way to utilise his ‘instinct’, which Estragon, I said is what Cahill had, I distanced myself from calling him ‘Lucky’ as his goals – the most important part of his game for club and country – aren’t luck, they are predatory – go back and read over that one again.

A look at the Socceroos' Golden Thirties players

The question doesn’t remain, about 500 questions remain unanswered and no-one is even scratching the surface here.

A solution to the AFL stadium issue

No I’m not joking. He may be one of our best but “one of the English Premier Leagues’ best players.” he is not. He is totally overrated and as both myself and Fisher Price have noted, requires a very specific system to fit in.

If you want to know why McDonald hasn’t scored for Aus, look no further than Cahill. McDonald plays well with another forward alongside him or in front but with Cahill playing for Aus he occupies some of the space that McDonald otherwise would and Cahill isn’t creative, he’s not good on the ball, he’s no fantastic leader, his defensive skills are non-existant and he doesn’t have the best shot on him for a supposed forward.

Cahill has his strengths and in Moyes and Verbeek, two men who know how to utilise them. He often gets carried through games simply because he only needs one corner or one half chance and he can change the game. Rarely is he best-afield, that’s just not his game, he isn’t an all-rounder, he’s a poacher and good from set-pieces but that doesn’t make him;

“one of the English Premier Leagues’ best players.”

A look at the Socceroos' Golden Thirties players

Yes, I have to admit that while I find some of Ian’s reminiscing nauseating especially of such a mediocre cricketing nation it is nice to know they have a supporter in him, adds a little bit of diversity to The Roar.

What have been the best Test matches ever?

Where the hell did this come from?

The West Indies comprises of 12 nations, I’d say that alone makes them imcomparable to other cricketing nations. Name one other board that has to appease 12 countries, that has to deal with the infighting of nations, not states under one flag, separate countries.

And yes, India should flog the world given they have 1 Billion people, that they can’t (and probably won’t for at least 20 years) has to do with the fact that they started later than other countries, generally (of course you will find an exception if you look) Australians, Kiwis and SAFfers are far better natural athletes and all three, as well as England have a very very good domestic cricket scene while India continues to struggle domestically with power.

I don’t remember any Windian great who was fully of Indian heritage, they have mostly been mixed players but the iconic players are all tall, lean and black – sort of the anti-Indian.

Lamenting the end of a great cricketing era

I don’t know that he is ready. I’ve only read good things about him and haven’t had the chance of seeing him play yet but by all accounts he has got the goods and considering Katich is old enough to be his father I’d much rather see Smith given his chance.

Australia needs players who will go on to have 100-125 Test matches in there career, Katich might make 70-80 and even then he will have been hanging on, he is 34 already and seeing as he got his chance so late he won’t bow out, he’ll have to be forced.
