30 or 40 years ago, Aussie Soccer was a bunch of rank amateurs with the occasional player being good enough to get a gig in England. We now have Socceroo and Matildas teams where a lot (if not a majority of players) play professionally all around the world, and Soccer has been sensible enough to have dedicated test windows for years. Our world rankings have soared as a result.
We have some bloody good Rugby players in Europe, Japan and USA and should not be shy about picking them. A rising tide lifts all boats and the blokes left behind in Oz will all need to work harder or try harder.

Fair dinkum – there are some real whingers in this mob. If they go belly up, they won’t be playing anywhere. At least at Tarniet, they are still alive and kicking. Uncharacteristically, for Rugby, the organisers of this Private Equity deal sound like they have some brains and vision – very un-Rugby like. Here is an interesting perspective.
For those of us who watched hte fantastic match between Leicester and Newcastle over the weekend, there is an argument for not stopping the clock, at least from the point of view of Leicester fans.
Newcastle were 6 points behind at the 80 minute mark. They got a penalty in kicking range, but obviiously were not going to kick, they had had trouble all night with the Leicester defence, so did not opt for lineouts, so took a scrum. Drew a penalty and a yellow card early on. Freddie Steward was already sidelined with a yellow, so two down, Newcastle took another scrum and then another and another – 20 minutes of extra time, with no result. Leicester drew a 3rd yellow card, but the extra time was so long that 2 out of hte 3 yellows returned to the field.
That would not have happened if the ref stopped the clock for each scrum.
I won’t tell you the result – you can watch it on Stan and I recommend that you do.

SR is not the be all and end all of Rugby, despite what many armchair Roar experts think. To us Clubbies that was an entirely appropriate way to program the day. Just so you know we started at 9.00 am with a 3rd grade trial against Wests, then the women played their trial, then a second curtain raiser Roma -v- Maroochydore, the curtain raiser, Brisbane Wests -v- Tuggeranong Vikings (Canberra) and then the main game followed by a car park party well into the night – which I confess I didn’t stay for, as I wanted to and did get home for The Brumbies and the other games on Stan. Pretty bloody good day, actually and by the way the game is also available to watch on Stan. So anyone who still has an issue about programming, just does not understand the nature of club rugby.

It’s a carnival day with a lot of other games and activities going on (and I’ll be there). You can them amble (or stagger) home and watch the STAN replays of the Super RC. Much rather watch a good club game, anyway, and have great day out with mates, where you can get up close and personal to the game, and this one should be a cracker.

It probably doesn’t hurt as much at the time, compared to later on when you look back on it and realise all the good things that flow from the win – the place on the ladder, positive press written about your heroism, your own highlights reel and the fact that you missed in public… which is why there is always a next week in Rugby..

It would not only have given more players an opportunities, but brought in revenues, improved coaching standards as well as refereeing standards, and it is a product that Stan could easily take on board. My guess is that “tribal identities” would have developed over time and most fans would now be taking that in their stride.
It’s the jersey that people take pride in, not the bloke wearing it. Most fans would not know which state or town a player comes from as long as he is doing their jersey proud. Most big professional sports work like that.
