Yes, they are superior on paper, but if you show that you can play too you can cause an upset. We had the one-goal advantage and we let them play to break us down. We sat too deep and we should have defended more up in the front third. Kusini Yengi, for Bruno Fornaroli who was never going to do it. We needed an aggressive front third to stop the wave of attacks starting from their backline.

Zonal defence is letting them have the ball, how many times did you see our boys press in the front third? 80% to our 20% possession is letting them have the ball in my book.

The first half was outstanding. We lost the game in the second half. We sat too deep and our subs were ineffective. We should’ve defended in front third, instead of letting SK have total possession.

When I go to Bunnings, Harvey Norman, or recently my pool shop wearing my old Chelsea Cap; I’m asked by the staffer, if I am a Chelsea supporter and do I think Chelsea will beat Liverpool. I reply sadly when manager Mourinho left Chelsea, I’m now a rusted-on follower of SFC, with a soft spot for the Brisbane Roar in the A-League. And I am always greeted in a bemused way. Australian Football fans need to come out of their closets and start making a stand.

The Socceroos aren't the only 'favourite' battling their way through the Asian Cup... It's a bloody hard tournament

I believe that the match ball, the Nike VORTEXAC23+ has been the reason, the highly fancied Asian teams, have found it difficult to dominate the tournament. The ‘Roos have had real issues with the match ball which was noticeably brought out in our passing. In my view, the match ball has certainly played a big part in levelling the playing field.

We have to get back to playing ‘keep-ball’. There were too many turnovers and players caught in possession, and there were too many sloppy passes.
We have to keep the passing sure and simple; retain possession and win the ball back quickly when we lose it. That was the lesson I got out of that game. Goodwin’s return was a delight tho.

Terrific read Johan. I love these visionary articles.

As Western United kick on with their $2 billion masterplan, it's time to turn the A-League focus onto a complacent Melbourne City

Yep, Zola, what a player!

We haven’t been able to find anyone to fill Mooy’s boots yet. I would like to see more of Silvera. Perhaps Silvera could do the job as the creative playmaker we don’t seem to have found yet.

And of course the national teams.

The APL is doomed to fail until it starts focusing on football

I see nothing has changed here on the Roar Football Tab. I was starting to enjoy my football experience again, away from the football trolls and the Roar negativity. I just dropped in to see if anything positive has been written—it looks like it hasn’t, so I will go on and continue with my other passions. Go SFC and CCM on Paramount +.

I agree, it was obvious the ref was fearful of the Victorian spectators. As a result not only did Irankunda have to put up with the constant booing from being constantly fouled, which led to the Vic CB being sent off, but then Irankunda, who protested against, not only one, but three fouls in succession, to bring him down. Irankunda, demonstrating against it was sent off; appalling officiating. As usual, the Vics supporters displayed a poor exhibition of fan base sportsmanship, which led to a disgraceful refereeing performance.

Irankunda sent off as Original Rivalry kicks off big time with two reds, two goals and a heap of controversy

Great comment.

If the Matildas can draw sell-out crowds, why can't the A-League Men?

FiL – It may not be apparent to some who come and post here on the Football tab, but Australian Football is slowly winning the minds and hearts of the younger generations. Full house in Perth with the Matildas 60K and in Melbourne the RL Aust vs NZ at AAMI Melbourne only 20K. A very poor attendance.

If the Matildas can draw sell-out crowds, why can't the A-League Men?

Still, plenty of time for Corica to get the house in order. 👍

I have always been of the opinion that Lolly has been one of the poorest visa players SFC bought. Mak is also too slow, and as for Brattan, he’s not a captain.

Season 21-22 | Games 163 | Total 896,242 | Average 5,602

“NRL, AFL, and NBL are all back at, or above, crowds before COVID.”
The ‘A-Leagues seasons’ do not coincide with the Winer codes. Therefore recovery time can’t be compared accurately as Football was much closer to the end of Covid than the other codes.

Therefore the confidence in returning to watching A-Leagues will be slower understandably.

However, what is clear evidence here now, is that ALM trajectory is pointing in the right direction. All be it with Australian Football’s poor scheduling and if shooting itself in the foot can be avoided.

If the Matildas can draw sell-out crowds, why can't the A-League Men?

Mike, averages are up on the last two previous ALM seasons, the trajectory is pointing upwards, so your pessimism is a bit unfair. Nonetheless, I want to say what a performance it was by the Matildas yesterday. On that display, a gold medal awaits us in the Paris Olympics. An outstanding display by our girls. As a past critic of Tony G, full credit must go to him and his staff for that A-class win, we are looking very good for a gold medal in the Paris Olympics.

I forgot to mention the surface was grass.

Kris – Expressions of interest from Eddie McGuire’s “EFTE roof over the MCG” all are welcome. Christo wants to wrap the MGG in glad wrap. WOW, that’s what we all want to see… 😂

“most of the world doesn’t have air conditioning”. Most of the world doesn’t have the dryest and hottest climate like we have. Except for the Middle East where air conditioning is a reality. (and USA)

We are a rich country, the problem is that the government sports money goes to the Olympics, AFL, and cricket and football gets only crumbs.

I didn’t know that grade cricket is experiencing record crowds.

You’re stuck in the 50s man.
“All stadiums used for the World Cup in Qatar were air-conditioned by altering the design of the stadium to block warm air from entering the stadium. Then, the spot cooling method is used in which only the air about 2 meters above the ground is cooled to reduce energy wastage.”

To add these stadiums did not have total roof cover. Do a bit of research.

Have you noticed in today’s summer sport that the heat through greenhouse and ozone layer depletion is abnormally unbearable compared to what it was in the 1950s? You solve the cricket dilemma and I’ll comment on today’s football problems. If you want to burn your brain out sitting on a grassy hill with the bindies up your backside, 1950s style, that’s your problem, I’m for the state-of-the-art stadia for football experience.
