I think ‘Turbo’ should have a name change. Although he is still a good strike player he has been permanently downgraded from a V8 to V6. He will never be faster than 50% – 70% of his top speed circa 2021.

Wighton, Graham, Arrow and Munro are all out, JD is persisting with a HB who should be playing NSW Cup and his two star players Latrell and Cody have a licence to play whenever they feel like it.
Jye Gray will get his shot and Tallis Duncan will play more minutes. Jack Wighton will give the side a lift and Cody and Latrell a kick in the pants when needed.
Souths will turn a corner in the coming weeks weeks. Wait and see. Their season is not doomed from the beginning.

What other reason would JD be picking Ilias based on his lack of form basically since day one of playing in the NRL.

He made a tackle and let go. The whistle wasn’t blown until after the contact with Cook and Reynolds throwing himself to the ground. He never used to do that at Souths but he does it regularly at the Broncos. Coincidence or typical QLDer tactics?

All 4 clubs who travelled to the US will be somewhat jaded in the first few weeks. That is why the NRL has organised a round robin schedule with all 4 teams playing each other over the first 2 rounds.
Souths problems run much deeper though with a coach who sticks with a HB just because they share the same heritage. Ilias is better suited to hooker and is NOT a HB!
Demetriou is also to scared to put pressure on his 2 stars Latrell and Cody and refuses to hold them accountable for their lacklustre, sub-par performances.
He also insists on playing reserve graders Kennar and Milne and Chee Kam (as an extended reserve looking close to a call up.
The fact remains Demetriou is lost without Wayne Bennett. His side has conceded 64 points, 24 errors and and 67 missed tackles in 2 weeks!
Russell Crowe needs to sack JD, bring Wayne Bennett back to Redfern in 2025 and offer Billy Slater $2 mill a season to take over the head coach role in 2025 with Bennett in a mentoring role going forward.

Referee Gerard Sutton quite rightly raised 10 fingers to signal a sin bin after Reynolds was rag-dolled after the initial tackle…
You should have gone to Specsavers! Watch the replay again from the reverse angle. Cook barely touches Reynolds while Reynolds throws himself backwards and then jumps to his feet appealing for a sin-bin. The ref was conned!
Congrats Broncos fans. The Broncos were too good but still very clunky.
Souths were woeful. Demetriou is to blame for poor coaching and not holding Latrell, Cody or Ilias accountable for their poor performances. Bennett wouldn’t play favourites and pull punches.

If the rankings were for attitude and resolve I assure you Souths would have ended up towards the bottom.
I’m sure they will plummet from the top 8 next week if that makes things better. I’m not expected Souths to snap out of their indifferent attitude until Jack Wighton gives them an on-field spray in round 3.
From the on the only way is up for the Bunnies. Especially once they dump Ilias for Gray.
I think we can both agree the Dolphins deserved to be ranked well below Souths.

I speak from experience, HfC. I grew up one. I’m not one now though. These days it’s more salt and pepper.
I had to chose a ‘minority’ for comedic effect and I picked one that was was bred to survive and thrive through adversity not roll over and meekly succumb to it.
From my experience people only puck on redheads once. Then never again. They usually find ut’s too much trouble for too little reward.

It’s still 4 weeks short of the 12-week ban I was calling for. But hey, it’s the Roosters, and you have to be grateful that it wasn’t just a 4-week suspended sentence and yet another token fine paid for by the Uncle Nick Brown paper bag fund.
NRL players need to reflect on this as a line in the sand not to cross again. Personal vilification (other than for readheads) will not be tolerated.

As for all the praise being heaped on young Laybutt, he had a good game but I’ll reserve judgement until later in the season.
One thing I can say is that Laybutt is a clear upgrade on Hiku.

I think Jack Wighton will influence the attitudes and involvement of both Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker on the field.
Jack will be reminding them he didn’t switch clubs for the pleasure of their company alone but to win a premiership. He will remind them that he joined a club that had finished in the top 4 and appeared in 1 GF in the previous 5 seasons before he signed with Souths.

Souths deserve their current place on the NRL ladder and don’t deserve to be ranked any higher in the power rankings.
Souths fortunes should improve now that Jack Wighton joins the team and now that Ilias has finally been hooked in favour of a natural, if albeit a NSW Cup, HB. I’d still prefer to see Latrell shifted to left centre, Jack to right centre and Murray back at lock. Souths are more than capable of beating the Roosters, but not without a complete change in their attitude and commitment in defence.
