Great article. That ‘84 Wynnum side had Origin and Test players such as Colin Scott, Terry Butler, Brett and Ian French, Gene Miles, Wally Lewis, Greg Dowling and Gary Coyne. Also local legends like Mal Green, Brian Walsh, David Green and Peter Dawes. And then they signed Bob Lindner for ‘85 and 86.

Rugby league pioneers series: The 1988 Brisbane Broncos

Love it, great side. Looking forward to Queensland’s.

The New South Wales Origin point-scoring machines

Have really enjoyed these articles, but this one in particular was superbly written.

The best South Sydney players who never played representative football

Richie Twist was stiff-armed in a vicious hit from John Elford in the first interstate game in 1972, rendering him unconscious. Although he was with Wests in those Premierships years of 75/6, he was never the same player again. Elford actually starting walking off the field after the hit before he’d been sent off…he knew it was bad.

Footy Card heroes of the Interstate Series

Love the article – Ron Raper went on to be a great coach, winning premierships at Wests in ‘75 and ‘76 after they got the wooden spoon in ‘74. He came back to coach Wests in 1983, won the pre-season cup but injuries to Tony Currie, Norm Carr and others cruelled their season. Also, Wally learned so many tricks from the Rat, Strudwick.

Another great article.

The Queensland State of Origin heavyweights

Great player but was short and nuggety- wouldn’t have topped 90kgs.

The Queensland State of Origin heavyweights

Billy J. Smith was colourful and witty but a very average commentator. He had a very superficial knowledge of Rugby League. He once called a 1981 Interstate game and mixed up the NSW 2nd rowers…called Paul McCabe Des O’Reilly for the whole game and vice versa.

That's not a try, that's a lead runner contacting the outside shoulder

Very true. He did make his one-day debut that year against the Windies and carried us to victory against the Poms, batting through the innings.

An Australian cricket team by the numbers – with a twist!

Yes, love these articles. Poor Robbie Kerr – could’ve been picked a couple of years before this series but unfortunately was out of form when eventually chosen. Oh, and he had to face Hadlee.

An Australian cricket team by the numbers – with a twist!

Fantastic and refreshing article. Wests’ Wayne Carr played for QLD in the 1979 interstate series but injuries cruelled him. Another Wests player in the late 80s/early 90s was Tat Whaleboat.

The name game: A team with unusual or unfortunate names

Another great article. A little-known fact is that Andy Platt (and Neil Holding) played for Brisbane Wests in 1985. Mal Meninga, with his St Helens connections, wanted them to play for Souths but there was no way they’d play first grade (Souths won the premiership that year) so he and Wayne Bennett (coach) organised for them to play for cellar dwellers, Wests, who came last or second last every year from 1980-87. They were great and always gave their all. Platt’s career really kicked off from then on.

Forget about the GOAT for a minute and check out this team of Pommy legends

Thank you for this article – That Man Harry was one of my favourite players growing up. Coached Wests in 1980 after a couple of seasons in Ipswich and even put the boots back on after an injury crisis.

Remembering the players who left us in 2021 – Part 1

Great team – can only think of Mark Murray who might be pushing Morgan for a spot.

Big boppers and brilliant backs: Rugby league’s alliterative XIII

Certainly did! Both State reps as well.

A couple from the BRL in the 70s/80s – Brian Bird and Bob Cock.

Sad couple of days with Ashley Mallett, Alan Davidson and now Bert Newton.

Alan was his uncle and had a long career with Souths Brisbane and QLD. I’m sure he played for Wests in Sydney too.

The guys I would've loved to see play for the mighty Dragons

Didn’t come much tougher than Hornery – he dismantled the Poms in ‘75 playing for Brisbane.

The guys I would've loved to see play for the mighty Dragons

I see the validity here but that ‘86 Ashes backline was incredible: Jack, Shearer, Kenny, Miles, O’Conner, Lewis, Sterling…so good Big Mal was on the bench.

It certainly wasn’t 7-1 when they were both five-eighths, more like around 8-4. NSW kept picking Alan Thompson, even as late as ‘84, which we thought hilarious.

The guys I would've loved to see play for the mighty Dragons

I remember the battles between Fahey and Boustead on the wings in interstate football in ‘78 and then in ‘82. Bowie chopped him down every time.

A team of great characters, some of my favourites. All Queenslanders rate Kenny, there’s no doubt about it but he being a “better player by some distance” than Lewis is certainly an opinion you can keep.

Incredible gully fieldsman (or is it now fielder). No offence to Lyon, but Mallet IMO was the better off-spinner. From the wonderful Chappell era where he was a cult hero and later a very respected author. Clumsy and awkward, but so very effective. RIP Rowdy.

Beetson came to Redcliffe in 81 and played in that grand final they lost with the last play. Zulu was such a popular player, Heugh was good…so many others like Rod Morris and Gavin Jones.
