I have zero interest in Lions tours so would second the sentiment that they should be scrapped.

'Time to move on': Gatland rules himself out of Lions duties for Australia tour - and nominates the best coach for the job

I can’t say I’d be in favour of the concept of a southern hemisphere Lions equivalent, just as I think the existing Lions concept is antiquated. Granted, the New Zealand v Lions series had some great games, but I’d prefer to see the individual countries (England, Wales, etc) playing and I’d much rather see World Rugby expand the international schedule/calendar and include more games between the tier 1 and tier 2 teams.

Time to 'do a Lions' and pick a Southern Hemisphere All Stars to bring four nations together

Good article and to the point. It was a great atmosphere at the stadium but the spectacle on the field was a bit dour due to the constant box kicking, handling errors and a couple of injury disruptions. The first and last 5 mins of the Boks v ABs game was fantastic, but the rest was a bit of an arm-wrestle. Wallabies v Argies game had a bit more, but the jumper clash was not ideal.

The Boks and All Blacks should try again

Good write up Geoff. Was hoping for some genuine contests on Saturday in Brisbane and Hamilton but it wasn’t to be. That first try conceded by the Reds was like watching a disaster in slow motion. Really hope we get a bit of improvement over the next few weeks.

The Wrap: New Zealand sides ruthlessly hunt Super Rugby bonus points

The potential was there throughout the last six test matches (with the exception of the game in Sydney) but the execution and decision making was just a bit off when it counted wasn’t it. In an alternative reality, Hodge kicks 2 out of 3 of those at the death and we’re then talking about 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses, although, at the end of the day, I think the final results are a fair reflection of where we’re at at international level. Lots for the coaches to work on over the next few months and I’m eternally optimistic that we can sharpen the skills and decision making to the point where we just start making a habit of winning.

The Wrap: Wallabies fans, stop me if you’ve heard this one before

Thanks Geoff. Agree about the viewing experience problem, but perhaps that could be solved by also putting a time limit from when the whistle blows for the penalty to when the scrum packs down? Thirty seconds should be enough, would just mean the forwards would have to trot over and get in position quicker.

The Wrap: Rugby learnings 101 - All Blacks show how it’s done in Newcastle

Re- the scrum resets, why not just stop the clock at scrum set/reset time? The ball is not in play so why does the clock keep ticking over? Stop the clock at the blow of the whistle, start the clock again when the forwards engage. Could apply the same principle every time the ball goes dead. Works well in a number of other sports.

The Wrap: Rugby learnings 101 - All Blacks show how it’s done in Newcastle

There is a seemingly unanimous cry of despair from all supporters (myself incl) looking at the comments here and elsewhere about AAC inclusion and Banks being left out. For my own two cents worth, I would have Pete Samu in over LSL.
There is a lot to like about this Wallabies team (assuming they can fix the scrum issues from last week), but there’s 2-3 selections here that are genuine head-scratchers.

Wallabies name 31-man squad for 2019 Rugby World Cup

Great summary Geoff. The national coach (and tv commentators) talking about the ref after games is getting quite tiring. I would have thought leaving a clear 10 points on the field just before half time, not applying scoreboard pressure, etc, had just as much bearing on the result. Regardless, I thought there were signs of life from the Wallabies in that game, but hard to really know how we’re tracking when we were playing the SA B team. We’ll get a much better idea over the next couple of weeks against the Argies and Kiwis.

The Wrap: Are the Wallabies cursed? Too right they are

There are arguments on both sides of this one (protection of free speech / expressing discriminatory views). Regardless of which side of the coin you agree with, he has basically backed RA into a corner. His position is untenable and they really have no other option but to let him go. Disappointing as he will be a massive loss to the wallabies squad when the World Cup rolls around later this year.

Rugby union would be a more inclusive, kinder place without Israel Folau and his backwards views

It’s been a pretty tough couple of weeks for any rusted-on Bombers fan to watch. There were signs of life in the second half last week, but the week before was the worst game I’ve seen them play since last year’s Anzac day match. I’ll be tipping the Demons but hope I’m wrong.

Death-match at the MCG

This seemed like a genuine opportunity to grow the game that has been cooked due to financial self-interest, topped up with some rhetoric about the concern for player welfare. It’s pretty clear that all involved in the 6 nations are on a pretty sweet wicket, and that those involved don’t want to cook the golden goose. The northern hemisphere unions will profit from a chunky new tv deal and the player drain from the southern hemisphere will just continue. At some point, the ARU will surely have to look at reducing down the number of caps for wallabies eligibility for overseas players so that we can get all of our top-end talent playing for the national team.

Nations League proposal set for the scrapheap as England reportedly opt out

I have never understood the decision to include the Sunwolves in the Super Rugby competition. By including them and the Jaguares at the same time the competition has became far too splintered. Their on-field results are improving, but there aren’t that many home-grown players on the field in any given week (unlike the other four countries involved). In my opinion, the decision to remove them from the competition is probably overdue, but the timing is pretty abysmal.

Sunwolves reportedly axed from Super Rugby

For my two cents worth:

* I would demolish the whole conference/pool system so that you’d only have teams getting through to the finals on merit.
* Getting a PI island team involved (probably as a collective between Fiji, Tonga and Samoa) is an interesting idea, but how would that work logistically?
* I cannot understand the continued interest in involving a Japanese team in the comp. I’m sure there’s a market to be tapped into and that Japan is a decent source of revenue, but the real cost is diminished interest in the comp by Aus and NZ (and SA) rugby supporters (local rivalries are much more interesting than some blow-in Japanese team)

Completely agree with the premise of the article that something needs to be done to reverse diminishing attendances

An alternative to Super Rugby

True, it could be split into 4 pools, each with 4 teams (or 3 pools each with 5 teams for a 15 team comp). The pools could be changed each year based on rankings changes. Something like that would still hold more appeal to me than a set-in-stone 12 team comp, which should already have been thrown in the dustbin.

The World Rugby 12-team league is a Six Nations set-up

Very good article. The whole world league idea is terrible … as if union is not already regarded as an elitist sport. One thought though, why the continued insistence on 12 teams? Why not expand it to 15/16 teams. That way, you’d be able to keep the tier one teams at greatest risk of relegation (USA, Japan, Italy) and you could also include the Pacific teams. What the Pacific island nations lack in commercial potential they make up for in the flair they bring to the game. Why not model any such comp (with a grain of salt) on what the Rugby 7’s are doing?

The World Rugby 12-team league is a Six Nations set-up

Yep, you can’t fault the effort of either player but the skills are just not up to scratch for RWC. Desperately need to fix our set piece issues as well, ball got pilfered at the line out far too often last year.

Wallabies misery means more at stake in Super Rugby

Just an idea, but get a Friday night game on free-to-air TV in Aus and actually promote it. The average punter in Australia does not care about rugby, partly because the game is hidden behind a paywall. At least try something to spark some interest from the general public.

Time for administrators to wake up on failing Super Rugby: Wessels

Great write up. This game, as usual, had some good moments but was interspersed with a lot of ordinary rugby and some poor decision making. Not a great game by either team and probably deserved a draw really but well done Wales for coming away with the points
