By the way, you look like a 2 year old kid repeating the same thing over and over again.

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

Racism is a worldwide issue and football is a worldwide game. Unfortunately, racism occurs. What is wrong with little old AFL, a small domestic game in relation to the world, that can have so much racism with so few involved? I haven’t heard of a football player in Australia having to leave the game due to constant booing by crowds, I haven’t heard of a football player in Australia having a banana thrown at them, I can’t recall the Human Rights Commission having to investigate racism in football, but I can for AFL. What is wrong with your game?

You brought up bigotry and when you follow AFL you live in a very fragile glass house.

From Doug Nicholls in 1927 who was rejected by Carlton due to his colour and smell to 2016 and the banana incident and the present Human Rights Commission investigation into racism and I don’t have time to mention Adam Goodes or Nicky Winmar, etc!

What is wrong with this little game.
This AFL has a lot of cleaning up to do and that doesn’t mean sweeping it under the carpet.
You brought up bigotry and when you follow AFL you’re in a glass house!

I can only imagine the bigotry on show if little old AFL was a world game. The industrial scale bigotry that exists is amazing for a game only played in Australia and mostly only southern Australia. You really punch above your weight.

Even with the culture of silence and the AFL sweeping all their dirt under the carpet, their problems are well known. You should have a read of Michael Holding’s – ‘Why We Kneel How We Rise’. There’s a whole chapter on AFL. This is probably the only time AFL becomes known to the world – when racism is discussed.

I only started following Sydney as they were the only team that I could go to – no other reason. At that time I was more interested in the NRL. Virtually 20 years later it turned out they were a great team to follow and I have little interest in the NRL.

I used to respect you – a theatre goer!
When I was in Melbourne I saw Groundhog Day with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It is a must see, absolutely brilliant, but don’t let anyone else know that I’m a theatre goer as well.
And the seating prices for theatre are now ridiculously overpriced. I tried to get last minute tickets, but they don’t happen. 139 dollars per ticket for the worst seats in the theatre. A good ticket for the theatre isn’t much less than a season pass to Sydney. There’s your reason to buy a season pass. Check out Cove Heights – atmosphere of the Cove, can’t get wet or sunburnt and a great view – especially when Sydney get last second winners at your end.

It’s also amazing how many former Sydney FC players/juniors score against us. The list would be quite large – Petratos, Antonis, Sapsford, etc.

One dumb person does something obnoxious (which is now a criminal act) and that is news for football and it will be followed up on. Hundreds of AFL players are using illegal drugs and ….
And while on the subject of bigotry and hatred let’s just say AFL! That dreadful treatment of First Nations players has crossed many borders in that game.

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

The funny thing is – people who follow NRL teams – attachment? People live in Liverpool and support Manly or in Narellan and follow the Roosters! There’s no real attachment for most fans other than they chose a colour or team. What was their actual reason for following a team? There’s usually no significant reason.

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

Kids are becoming attached. I see it at the school I work at. We read about it with our players. There are a lot of Hayden Matthew’s out there (Sydney’s young centre back) who grew up following Sydney and has autographs and photos of him with Sydney players that he admired. Just like our academies are producing a real talent line, the fans can come too. Like Midfielder bangs on about – our clubs need to get to grassroots games/training sessions and encourage the youngsters more.

Thanks David – the derby was brilliant. There was a good crowd, the Cove were amazing, the game was exciting and the finish was wonderful – a last moment goal by Kurcharski. I also liked how Talay acknowledged what the Cove did to be the 12th man and help get Sydney home. I also like how Sydney started with Matthew’s and Rodwell on the bench. This would never have happened in seasons gone by.
Adelaide were the better team for 80 minutes and lost. Nestory’s goal was brilliant and I also rate Ibusuki. I think Ibusuki would be even better with Jovanovic next to him. It’s hard to predict what Macarthur will do in the next 5 minutes, let alone the finals!
Perhaps City are back. Their team is coming together again and their confidence will be sky high after that win. I also felt sorry for Perth and Stajic as they are a better team than that. Their “glory” days will return with their new leadership.
I really hope Newcastle are in next season as they are a great football area. However, if there’s no owner to “invest” in them then we have to move on. They are not the only “business” to go bust in Australia. Owners with deep pockets are hard to find. Anyone who supports a club that has no financial concerns should be sending an email of thanks to that owner!

Guys with too much time and money doing drugs. The AFL pretending it is not happening and condoning it. It is not a welfare matter, it should be a police matter.

Western United's football-specific facility is a milestone worth celebrating

Ha ha ha – player welfare! AFL image welfare is what it is. Keep sweeping it under the carpet Mike, right alongside racism.

Faaaabbbiioooh!

That’s true to some degree, but many clubs (Sydney definitely) keep a good core of players Because football is a world game there will be more turnover. Even our young players, pre A League, are all over the world! Players get very good money in so many countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, etc before you even think of Europe. You will never get that problem in AFL or even NRL because they’re not world games and there can never be anywhere near that sort of room for movement.

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

Maybe they can’t. It is a great product from the highest participation base of any sport in the country. I go and I love it, others don’t. Basketball has similar issues. Great game, great product and not a huge interest from the public or media because there is the NBA. In cricket there is great interest in the national team and none in the shield. Where are all those stories? No one, and I mean no one goes to the Sheffield Shield, In my opinion the derbies in football (Melbourne and Sydney) are the best sporting events I’ve been to. Nothing rivals them for atmosphere and I’ve been to a lot of different sporting events. It is what it is and the clubs and the APL need to solve it. And if they don’t, I’ll continue to enjoy the product we have. More advertising is needed, but …The AFL is constantly advertised and would I go? Only if they paid me to attend because think the game is rubbish!

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

AFL fan boys like you actually believe this. It’s an AFL cover up because … “Peter Larkins claimed every club doctor had an arrangement with the AFL that players could have positive drug tests covered up. “This was a system deliberately put in place to assist players to get off the system if they were caught up in societal drug use,”

The Sydney FC club is brilliant to be a member of. Their membership team is amazing and we are well looked after.

Agree – I drove down to and enjoyed the Melbourne derby last week and attended the Sydney derby this last weekend. They were great sporting events.

Well written – so true.

How can the APL convince casual fans the A-League Men is worth supporting?

It’s not a joke – covering up drug use is a crime. That’s not funny. Another AFL cover up and everyone knows it.

Western United's football-specific facility is a milestone worth celebrating

Will they make the 6? Only one point away. Will they overtake Macarthur or Sydney? I was hoping for Sydney 4 and Macarthur 5.
