Still, you have to make allowances for the time, 1934, middle of the great depression, politically, Europe is in a state of flux with WWII only 5 years away, long voyages to cross the Atlantic, etc, etc.

It remains a remarkable feat that they managed to to have 3 world cups prior to the start of WWII.

if fans of this site want it so, then yes, I will avail myself to make witty comments through every WC game played live.

We are all worthy of redemption.

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

Chris

I was recently promoted to Guru.

My guess is that it was a result of having written so many highly acclaimed posts on this site, and being much loved and revered by the footballing community.

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

I find all people are ignorant, certainly very few live up to my high expectations.

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

Why does anyone have to stand up for football?

Surely it’s big enough and ugly enough to stand up for itself.

Also, it’s WC time, it’s a time when people come out of the woodwork and pretend to like football, at least allow me the one luxury of being a pretender at this most opportune of times.

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

She probably didn’t like any sport – do you doubt there might exist one Argentinian out there who dislikes football?

I can’t attest to her propensity to initiate online discussions on sports forums.

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

He may have captained the last game, but only as a fill in, he did not start the season as the regular captain (understandable, aged 21).

He only started playing senior football last season when the first choice right-back got a long-term injury.

Nevertheless, good on him, he is an intriguing player, he got a chance and took it with both hands, and my gut feel is that he has the mentality and maturity to impress Lambertus and get a WC gig.

Having grown up in Croatia, he’ll have the best football education of any current socceroo, and the level he is playing at would easily be the equal of a Millwall.

A debate has two sides, he has given his side, admittedly it’s pretty weak, and now you get to give your side, which should be a lot stronger (although by attacking the author and the Roar, it hardly strengthens your side of the argument).

And most probably he has written this tongue in cheek, and perhaps my opening line is in-kind.

And perhaps he dislikes football, but so what.

I once met an Argentinian lady who disliked football.

It does happen.

Thomas English is a Roar Guru….respect.

He lists his favourite sports as cricket and rugby.

I for one welcome views on football from the followers of such sports.

We can all learn something.

Whether we like it or not, the BBL, inside 9 weeks gets more than triple the TV ratings of what the A-League gets in 27 weeks (and the BBL is playing one less game per week over those 9 weeks).

So if you are having a good hearty laugh at the BBL, what is your reaction to the A-League?

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

Obviously it’s absurd, so why get uptight about something so patently absurd?

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

That’s tellin’ ’em Waz.

I think back to the Twisted Sister classic: We’re not gonna take it!!

We’re not gonna take it….anymooore!!

The other day I said that the fact that we have two players from MIllwall in the squad probably tells us everything about the quality of the squad.

We now have only one player from MIlwall in the squad (the other is now unemployed).

Socceroos release 32-man World Cup squad

He captains the U21 team.

Lambertus was guarded when discussing him.

He was born in Croatia (never been to Australia) and learned his craft in Croatia, so odds on he has received a far better football education than most of the squad (indeed, most of any socceroo in its history).

He is a specialist right-back, and thus the only specialist right-back in the squad (every other option can play there as a secondary role).

He’s a big risk, but he is actually a very good chance of making it if he can impress Lambertus.

Socceroos release 32-man World Cup squad

A welcome addition to the debate.

It’s certainly true that currently, Oct-Nov is the very best window for the A-League. That has been proven during the past decade consistently in terms of attendances and ratings.

Other sports are waking up to this, so even that Oct-Nov window will gradually tighten.

All that aside, I believe 9 weeks is far too short to run a football competition, and with aspirations to increase the size of the league to 16 clubs, it must have a minimum of 15 rounds, but preferably 30 rounds.

The A-League needs to be completely slashed

On the one hand, it’s probably not possible to sign up a player like Iniesta wihout the help of the FFA, but on the other hand, the FFA shouldn’t really be helping out just the one club in the name of promotion (unless, perhaps if its a 1:3 matching exercise or similar, but even then….)

FFA to contact Iniesta over A-League move

The one big advantage Australia has, is Australia itself.

VAR: This is what they warned you about

If a 36 year old Tim Cahill was worth $4 mill a year, then a 33 year old Iniesta is worth at least three times that figure….at least.

FFA to contact Iniesta over A-League move

Ha ha, yes, one of the controversies I had in mind!

VAR: This is what they warned you about

Six players is over half your outfield team.

Can Arnold's Sydney FC model work for the Socceroos?

Here’s a huge positive story:

Iniesta looking at the A-League. He’s only 33 years old.

Would be a huge name, there aren’t many that are bigger.

Stuart

controversial decisions (or non-decisions) have been playing out in the WC since its very inception.

VAR: This is what they warned you about

Although I just noticed that the A-League grand final actual beat the AFL game which was on at the same time:

3. LIVE: FOOTBALL: A-LEAGUE GF NEW V MELB V – FOX SPORTS 501: 210,000

4. LIVE: AFL SYDNEY V NORTH MELBOURNE – FOX FOOTY – 209,000

It goes to show that there is life yet in the A-League.

The best thing about the 2017-18 A-League season is that it's over

The game is probably stronger in Sydney than Melbourne, and there may have been two AFL games on at the same time.
