Kiwi, following the Highlanders. Long past my playing days, not that I ever did much worthy of note on the field.

We were outplayed. Well done England.

Good luck South Africa

All Blacks all over: England knock New Zealand out of Rugby World Cup

Ever notice that Raylene Castle and Ritchie McCaw are never in the same room together?

The Wrap: Devious New Zealand plot to destroy Australian rugby exposed

Foiled! Would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling people.

Horseshoes and hand grenades.

Pocock was immense, Timu (sp?) also impressed me kept pushing to the very end, made lots of hard yards in a loosing fight.

At this level inches count, the Wallabies weren’t far off the pace, and are worthy of our respect, I still rate them as a team capable of beating the all blacks (kiwi here). This period of tough results will pass.

Brilliant Beauden Barrett bags All Blacks another Bledisloe Cup

I had a close look on the replay. I’d say debatable.

Marshal saying Savea’s knee was on the ground. Think it’s close, but not certain there.

They held tough until that yellow card though. Changed the complexion of the game.

Pity, because those two calls aside, the ref’s been damn good.

Enjoying this ref. He seems decent

Would really prefer the TMO stays out of it unless asked. But that looked awfully like a knock on to a player in an offside position to me.

Damn straight. The Lions would have gone through the kiwi teams like last weeks chicken curry.

Kiwis get stuck into Super Rugby format

To be fair I think more than just the Kiwi’s are looking a little sideways at the way the table is playing out.

If they win the next 3 games then they win the comp, home advantage would have been nice, but as long as you’re not bouncing around the southern hemisphere the travel should be manageable.

The Brumbies have a starters chance, same as the other 7 teams, the loss earlier this year means as much as the win last year does, bugger all.

Thank you Nicholas, always good to read your articles, I love the technical detail.

It seemed very stark to me the difference in officiating between the Crusaders game and the Highlanders game. I try not to blame refs and acknowledge they have a tough job, and they’re trying their best. But I did find the Crusaders game hard to watch with some of the calls. And in the way the game management was approached.

In your opinion was there a clear difference in refereeing style? Or is my eyepatch getting the better of me again?
Is it just a question of adjusting to the ref?

The Lions finally show some crusading spirit

To be fair no sportsperson can go into a game saying anything other than we’re capable of winning and we believe we will. Anything else and they’d be slaughtered in the press and social media.

Ok, you’re exhausted and maybe not thinking straight, but why kick it out when you’re 16 points up and could use a bonus point!?

Agree there, didn’t warrant a card, but dumb to put themselves in a position where the ref is asking the TMO what he “sees”

“…show everyone what we’re capable of and what Australian teams have got to produce ”

Couple of ways that comment could play out.

Looking forward to seeing the Highlanders under the roof again, time for Sopoaga to stand up and demonstrate his credentials.

Tahs seeking upset under roof

Really nervous about Coles availability, and arguably the one position where the understudy isn’t nearly as good as the incumbent. As the hurricanes coach said: ACL = X weeks etc, but concussion = how long is a piece of string.

He’s going to be trying his best to be ready, but Charlie Ngati was doing the same for nearly a year, without success.

Are Lions fans whistling past the graveyard?

I like that the British and Irish fans/media are bullish, it makes for better banter. I’m looking forward to a competitive series, which I hope the All Blacks will win 3 nil, and the super rugby sides steal a game or two also. But that’s just hope, I’m allowed to dream I believe.

You can’t expect the Lions themselves to say anything other than what every sportsperson Has To say prior to any game, some variation on we respect the opposition and we believe in our heart of hearts we can win. Anything else and they’d be pilloried.

Are Lions fans whistling past the graveyard?

Agreed. It’s refreshing to hear some relatively balanced opinions from the other side of the fence. Too often it’s either the echo chamber of our own opinions or strident and shrill denouncements of the character, heritage, and ability of the opposition and their fan base.

Are Lions fans whistling past the graveyard?

Playing our super rugby sides could be the making of this tour, the last thing you’d want would be your team rolling into the first test and then going “what the hell was that???”‘ Playing the blues etc, will give them a stepping stone into the way we play the game here before they get to the Big Dance.

They’ll hit that first test with a clear idea of what to expect, and what they need to do. Far better than what video analysis etc would be able to give them. Of course the “what doesn’t kill you” theory only goes so far…

The British and Irish Lions can win in New Zealand - but do they believe it?

I’m disappointed we’re not seeing the Lions play the NZ franchises in the regular season, I think they’d be competitive games. Which is what we want. Yes the Lions can only play what’s in front of them.

With regards to last season, compare the Lions opponents in their home and away games vs the Hurricanes opponents. There is a difference in quality no? That’s at least a few extra points there. Same as this season.

Not expecting you to defend the conference system, we all know it’s broken.

That all being said it’s grating when people talk the Lions down, they’ve done everything they can, we’ll find out in the knockout rounds, and I’m looking forward to it. It just feels a bit phoney war until they’re playing the highest performing teams, to be fair the reverse is true of the crusaders also. Until they play the Lions we don’t know really, how good they are.

The High Five: Super Rugby Round 12

Quite. The Lions vs any of the kiwi teams would be very interesting, suspect they’d be there or there abouts, guess we’ll have to wait till the knockout phase.

Really looking forward to this Saturday nights game.
