Really good write up. We’re definitely producing some cracking young players in bulk now.
My generation (gents born between 95-99) are what I refer to as the “dark ages” of youth football. Not many high quality players to show for how many of us actually played and I put it down to the broken pathways that existed during the 2010s.
Now, however, the academies are stable, NPL standards have improved for the most part and participation numbers are bigger than ever before.
Youngest ever Australia Cup scorer, another electric talent from Adelaide, and sons of Socceroos: Meet the future of Australian football
Well, the quickest way for ADL or Nestory
to crush this is to turn around and call out the complaining clubs’ assumption – “Actually, I don’t want to play for Australia, I’m thinking of Burundi.” It would give me a heart attack, but it would shut them up quickly.
A-League clubs air grievances after Nestory Irankunda's shock snubbing of Olyroos duty
Phoenix 0 – MV 0; has to be the most consequential matchup. Nix come home strong but can’t snag a winner. Izzo the difference.
ADL 3 – MAC 2; Reds’ attack too strong, Bulls missing Davila, Bernardo creativity and Hollman engine.
WU 0 – CCM 2; late goals for the Mariners in a tense battle.
BNE 1 – Jets 1; lots of chances, no winners.
SFC 4 – WSW 2; Sky Blues keep 11 men on the park and go bananas.
MCY 2 – PG 1; Leckie and Maclaren drag city across the line.
The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 24 - Sydney Derby takes centre stage and urgency for finals hopefuls
That’s correct Ben. The Olympic squad won’t be selected until we qualify. Further, three overaged players are permitted under current IOC rules to play, so for the SMH to report Irankunda has knocked back a place at the Olympics is a stretch (unless Irankunda verifies this himself).
Irankunda sensationally turns down Olyroos spot in baffling update - and Vidmar left in lurch on eve of qualifying
You’re right Grem, and it can’t go unpunished. I’m unsure as to NRL rules, but I know for a fact the AFL sanction players for staging (I.e simulation. Minimum $1000 fine and it can go as high as $2500. The A League should financially hurt players if they alter the game through dark arts. As far as I’m concerned, Cancar should receive a fine that substantially hits his payslip, as any player who cynically dives.
Simulation crackdown: If they like the spotlight so much, put A-League actors up before the Match Review Panel
This is an issue that should have been dealt with years ago and, if it had been, this Cancar incident could have been avoided. Anyone remember Fernando of Melbourne City? We’ve had some simulation offenders come to our league in the past and to my memory there was never a real conversation about how to stamp it out. I don’t recall any rules change, no MRP action, nothing (I could be wrong). Some of the suggestions below seem fair; why not drag Cancar before the MRP to explain how he was floored for several minutes with a supposed facial/head injury but didn’t require a concussion test or a substitution?

Well said Knocka.

Result and red card aside, Sydney FC are playing some decent football. Perth would be frustrated to settle for a point.
A 10-man Sydney FC withstand siege to end Perth's A-League finals chances
I’m merely pointing out that she didn’t get the response she probably expected.
Hypocritical response? Chelsea coach Emma Hayes cites male aggression, then shirt-fronts Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall
Her allegations would have had more traction if she worked in the men’s game. But the irony of slandering men who have dedicated their lives and made personal sacrifices for the betterment of women’s football wasn’t lost on fans, hence why she backtracked and apologised. The most effective way to divert attention is to create a “bad guy” for others to target. Marko Rudan literally did this last month when WSW were losing their way. It fools some.
Hypocritical response? Chelsea coach Emma Hayes cites male aggression, then shirt-fronts Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall
I hardly see NZ media going nuts when Australian teams are on top of the ladder? Tasmanian JackJumpers just won the NBL championship and there was a hardly mention in Stuff NZ or NZ Herald.
Irankunda's brilliance, Sydney suffocate Mariners, 'blackout' prevented as NEP save the day
I should be clear Waz, I’m not blaming A League fans such as our community here at the Roar. I’m tired of the hundreds of thousands of juniors and families across the nations who could turn this whole thing around but would rather watch their occasional Tillies match and pay for an Optus subscription to watch their Spurs play. I have my criticisms of A League governance 1000%, but if what we say is true and “football is nothing without the fans”, then it’s the fans who must make the change, not accountants and marketers.
A-League avoids total embarrassment after broadcast partner goes belly up
Perhaps I have misunderstood the model. Does GA earn any proceeds periodically beyond their contract? If not, I do retract (but I still scream for fans to buy the product nonetheless lol).
A-League avoids total embarrassment after broadcast partner goes belly up
Denialists will say “whatever, let us know when it’s fixed”, but that’s not the point – the plausible assumption here is that GA going into administration means their broadcast deal with A League did not deliver the fruits they had hoped, i.e., consumers weren’t buying the product.
News Corp are reporting that NEP are set to be announced this afternoon as the group to see out the season.
Our league can’t keep making losses like this. No one is coming to our rescue, football fans across Australia need to decide if they’re going to start tything. BUY the product, ATTEND the games. A 20-man Bull Pen at Campbelltown Stadium is not sustainable and a few thousand people tuning in on Paramount per game won’t suffice.
A-League avoids total embarrassment after broadcast partner goes belly up
It’s weird isn’t? This NZ team has frequently been described as the nation’s ‘golden generation’ of football talent, yet the results suggest anything except that.
'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark
I think a move to Denmark or Sweden would be a nice fit at his age. Crazy to think he’s 33 this year – will be in the coaching box soon enough. Perhaps take over from Veart?
'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark
In other news: New Zealand lose to Tunisia to make it one win in their last 13 matches! What the hell is going on NZF?
'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark
Arnie is delivering in the qualifiers so far and that frustrates his critics. Even when we’re average against Lebanon, we still pick up a 2-0 win. In the past, Socceroos’ teams would have nipped a draw.
Arnie is also working with a squad that is less talented than what Ange or van Marwijk had and still pulled a better WC finish – something that is often overlooked.
Get off the Socceroos' backs! One training session, a win against Lebanon and still people fail to understand Asian football
I wonder if the second division will be the turning point for this issue. Having a nationalised second tier could really propel government assistance in ways we haven’t seen for our game – infrastructure, pathway programs, major projects and events partnerships, etc. The real key is getting big crowds consistently through the gate; one of the reasons I was deflated post-WWC was that within a fortnight of the Matilda’s finishing up their tournament, the A League Women’s WU vs MC pulled a meagre >2500. We need government to see the stands packed in our top domestic competition, or we might as well just keep hoping.
Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding
Mauragis, Clisby, Farrell, and Garrucio all ahead of King.
Sydney FC fullback drafted into Socceroos WCQ squad after double injury blow
It’s good to see other football fans take the FTA discussion seriously. And a lot of great points in the comments. So much of the game’s future hangs on its broadcasting and coming to the lounge rooms of families who are channel flicking.
The improvements needed to bring the A-Leagues back to prominence
Well said Nick, couldn’t agree more.
Baccus, Rowles net first goals as Socceroos cruise past Lebanon but Arnie sweats on injuries
Standard isn’t it. There’s football fans, then there’s Eurosnobs.
Baccus, Rowles net first goals as Socceroos cruise past Lebanon but Arnie sweats on injuries
The nation has more than a century of evidence to show soccer has been behind Aussie rules and league – why is this news to you? No one here is whinging about junior registration or how EPL teams selling out stadiums – that’s always been happening. The A League is not leading the race in domestic competition and your claim it is shows how naive you are of the sporting landscape.
'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?
I’ve wondered this also Stu; Aussies like to think they’re gritty and self-made, but the truth is we have a serious entitlement complex coupled with a chronic whinge culture which leads us to blaming everything and everyone except our very selves. If something doesn’t fall our way, we throw our toys out of the cot.
Having lived in Chile and seen enough of the Middle East and Europe, I know that the A League measures up to – and even outperforms – the leagues of some big football nations. For a competition less than 20 years old that was made out of thin air on a slim budget, it’s a good product with its best years ahead.
Corporates, media, and government do not make the game function – it’s the fans. No one who advocates the NSL era cites government and media support as the difference; they had it worse.
This is a hard truth for both the Men’s and Women’s game. If we want good football for the women, we need to be going to the matches.
Forget those bringing down the game, what if we embraced the A-League and Australian football cups are actually half-full?
