Thanks! Enjoy this series.

Who should coach my favourite All Blacks team?

Great point on the 10-12.

He’s fine. I’ll watch him in the 6N to see if he’s ok. Let you know. 😂

Hahaha, the Welsh physio probably should be paid highest

Italy hasn’t won a 6N match since 2016, I think. And they are flirting with a -200 PD.

Yes, I think Ireland will give the English scrum all kinds of issues.

Lovely clashes in store for us: the England v France looms as pure box office, but Ireland’s test against the French is just as intriguing. Which one is your most eagerly anticipated?

Alex needs an extended run at 8.

What a Bronco test!!!!! Hugo!!!

Galthie or Farrell, I suppose. I’d lean to Farrell, but only if he gets great play from his 10s.

Excellent post, NB.

Sorry, that’s right. England, France (away) and Italy at home, right?

Yes, I am unreasonably excited about the 5N, I mean 6N, this year! For example: at fullback, we have 5 absolute operators to watch. The front row battles will be magnificent. There are some serious wings going to battle with each other. We have really young and really old 10s. And the comp is stacked with loosies of high quality.

Bierne not in the starting pack? That’s a strong pack if he can be left out.

This tourney has GREAT fullbacks! France and Ireland and England and Scotland and Wales all have top 15s

Thanks, AE. Our game is just barely professional, and the part of it that is least professional is probably reffing. Why do I say that? It’s the least transparent. It doesn’t have metrics. We seldom see relegation or demotion until it’s too late; if a ref like Stuart Berry has inexplicable penalty disparity for a whole year! And they aren’t paid commensurate with their importance or skill. It’s just a seniority thing. And some are paid by their unions.

Best post of the year, JN

The Roar Rugby Project Part 8: There is no game without a referee

Probably 7-8. For a total of 22! The issue is: do we know if that’s a lot? I don’t know. WR won’t tell us. Also, of those 22 or so, how many were material (non-trivial). In the first test, that definitely tilted against SA. But it evened up in the last one (second was even). Our game is mysterious and often maddening. I have no solitons, nor does Rassie. He is obsessed with winning and having fun.

Yes, NFL Films literally produce actual films that people like to see. Super

England rugby at the crossroads: Which way will Eddie Jones turn (Part 1)?

I think refs have probably replied to coaches faster! And been stricter on the breakdown. But it’ll wane

'Wild and kicking arse': What Boks fans want from rejuvenated Rassie - South Africa’s brilliant rugby rascal

Coaches (Rennie, Jones, Erasmus currently; and many more privately) believe the standards of player fitness, analytics, game theory, and skill have continued to rise and rise, whilst the accountability and accuracy of refereeing has stagnated because there is little incentive in a system where they “are always right” publicly, and apologies are only private and after the fact. It’s part of the professional versus amateur thing. Rassie went way over the line in being a “vigilante” coach. Hopefully I’ve made that clear. But most coaches believe what I have written in my first sentence.

We do need a lot better marketing. NFL calibre. Rugby PR is really terribly lame, retrograde, and laddish. I don’t know if you watched Chasing the Sun, but Rassie does know how to produce empathic, emotive material to grow the sport. Black participation in rugby has rocketed for many reasons, but Rassie is one of the top reasons. He’s not bougie. Gets rugby out of the striped blazer schools and into the streets of Southern Africa, particularly in Eastern Province. WR asked him to head rugby expansion ideas, and I think that fits him when he finally grows up.
