SA dialect happening there. It’s a formal sense. Arguably stronger.

The Thursday rugby two-up: The Panel's Players of the Year

The referee issue won’t remain as it is now. As club, equity, media, and money de-amateurise the semi-pro game we all love, the doctrine of referee infallibility (or more precisely, the theology that says a couple dozen errors is immaterial and all participant critique must be behind closed Vatican doors) will soon be reformed or remanded, and a much more public and calibrated system of grading the refs’ performance will ensue. The performance tiers will define who gets the top tests MORE than nationality. 0-10 errors, 11-20, 20-30, and up. The categories of error will be better known. Barnes struggles with offsides, Brace with scrum, Reynard with advantage consistency, etc. Something like that.

The art of the apology. I like apologies to be soon, short, and simple.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

I believe you. 100 years doesn’t lie. I want to avoid NZ in the RWC like the plague. But this number one ranking in an age of parity is overrated. Every team has at least one bogey team.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

That Rassiesance is an anomaly and very few teams can go from 7th to RWC crown in 2 years. You have to have about 40 good players who were badly coached; and coach them up. NZ could do that, exactly. Not sure anyone else (in a 2 yr cycle). I think NZ is still favoured to win 2023, but maybe not 2022.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Yes, I am fine with a SA v FR quarterfinal, but it just cannot be NZ until later—need attrition of KO rounds to do its work on the Kiwi pack. Thanks, JN! It’s been a helluva year and it’s good to have you in the boat with me.

True.

Good point. Edwards is the real thing. However, France is perpetually in revolution. And as the national team starts to look like a champion, the vultures will start to circle. The owners, the players, the coaches, the fans; they have a strange and debilitating tendency to form a circular firing squad.

Thank you, Ken. Have a lovely holiday season. It’s a pleasure to write for this raucous crew. Love your allusion to ref-tricking prose. As an old loose forward, that’s the ticket!

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Definitely. Will plan on being there a month. Absolutely—we’ll have a drink and chat about nonsense and sense. Have you chosen a team to follow, or will you just get best tickets and enjoy the spectacle?

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

French pack is very good. Bigger than the Bok pack. It’ll be a good battle.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Yes, that’s our old, tired song, boet! But Nienaber is fixated on not conceding tries; instead of scoring them.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Yes, perfect schedule to prep. Ireland a pool preview. France a likely QF. Looks like Boks will base in Aix-en-Provence area. Not sure why we playing a 3-test series vs Wales and then again outside window. Would prefer another crack at Eddie.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Boks play France in November. Also, Wales 4 times! Ireland …

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Yes, but if my team wins by one because the other team misses 4 kicks (and I make all mine), I know I didn’t have the game. I am lucky that day, and can’t rely on that.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

Purely a style matchup issue. When all teams are in peak form, SA struggle with AB-ness more than Frenchness. There’s a few reasons for that, but the key one is that French pack won’t roll SA, and without that, France (and England) can be pressured into the kind of mistakes the attack-limited SA needs to score. NZ can survive pack inferiority if it’s not too massive.

Interesting scoop on Dalton

It’s a metaphorical analysis. I leave techne to Nick, and authoritative wraps to thee!

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

RT, that sounds plausible! Horrors! Yes, the age of Duane, Frans, Willie, and such … helps until suddenly it doesn’t. Since it’s likely SA v FR in a QF, it truly could be age v youth. But SA does have young options (Roos, Fassi, etc) and I hope we see them in 2022. NZ: mate, you have 3 cracks at Ireland in 2022 to prep for a QF in 2023. You’ll figure them out. I think?

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

France looks slick. At this moment. But I’m mindful of their long history, because I’m old and have watched French rugby for fifty years, from the blood-soaked Jean-Pierre Rives era, and am intimately acquainted with two of their main clubs, in my profession. I’ve lived there. Gone to a season of Lyon, Montpelier, and Clermont games. Just when it all looks aligned, and ready to work, that’s when the discord begins. That’s all. Not a fact. Just a feeling. Based on Frenchness. And how it is. On the Lions series, the better team, just, won. As is always the case in series.

'Rocky, heaving, but brutally beautiful': What we learnt about every RWC contender in 2021

I agree. 😂

Let the skipper with advantage just declare: “we take it.” And have a standard time (10 seconds?) for ad.
