Sad but Roberto Bettega is probably correct. Where was Sydney’s person responsible to ensure that these quotas were met? And what was the match commissioner doing in not noticing they failed to meet the U23 player quota? Plenty of blame to share here.

Sydney FC's finals spot in jeopardy after rule breach sanction

Superb game full of drama. Real Madrid won this in the first leg. But in leg 2 Modric’s superb pass and fine finish by Rodrygo was just out of this world. Chelsea ran out of energy in the extra 30 minutes and Real Madrid made them pay. Rodrygo and Camavinga provided a spark for Madrid off the bench, Chelsea got nothing from their subs. And congrats to Villarreal, a team which continues to show “small clubs” which are well coached and well run, can achieve success.

Late drama as brave Chelsea fall to Real Madrid in extra time, Bayern stunned by Villareal

Not a surprise and it appears to be the wise choice. He will be juggling all 3 formats at once, although appears the ODI team will take a back seat until after the T20 World Cup is over.

Andrew McDonald confirmed as Australia's head coach on long-term deal

Tough decisions with Jhye Richardson and to a lesser extent Wade but who would be dropped in their favour? Bottom line is there is a lot of cricket ahead and both J. Richardson and Wade, and anyone else not contracted, except for Pattinson obviously, still will have their opportunities over the next 12 months. As an example watch for Ellis especially at the T20 level.

'Goodness me:' Major shock as Jhye Richardson axed from Cricket Australia's contract list

Really impressive play from Ellis. He’s someone who should seriously push for a place on the T20 World Cup squad. As for Babar Azam, he truly is one of the elite batsmen in world cricket and is a danger in all 3 versions of the game.

Finch finds T20 form as Australia finish historic Pakistan tour on a high

Brilliant play by Real Madrid, Benzema was scintillating and his first two goals were wonderful but the speed and precision of the passing between Benzema and Vinicius Junior on the first goal was wondrous. And that was followed by the perfectly placed header that gave Mendy no chance. A great exhibition of football by Real Madrid.

Captain fantastic! Pakistan lose 7-20 as Cummins, Starc spark stunning collapse to put Aussies in command

An extraordinary finish to the day, Pakistan looked well placed at 3-248, next thing you know after Cummins and Starc worked their magic, Pakistan was 268 all out. In my view, the key to winning this game is be aggressive at the crease and look to score runs quickly, build up a comfortable enough margin to then declare and allow enough time to work through Pakistan’s order. Easier said than done but still obtainable.

Australia is the only national team in the world that I know of where a player will miss the final World Cup qualifier because he is getting married. Absolutely astonishing, past Covid enforced delays or not. On the other hand if Mclaren does not produce against Japan, the final match away to Saudi Arabia could essentially be meaningless anyway. So let’s see what Mclaren does on Thursday. Melbourne City I heard denied Curtis Good’s selection as the late replacement, so next option was Wilkinson who is there for his veteran presence, it is very unlikely he would play.

“It’s an embarrassment, not just to you, to the game”

Not my words, those of Nick Montgomery, Central Coast Mariners coach as heard on the clip of the non call on the penalty. And he is 100% correct.

Farcical VAR incident overshadows City win over Mariners

Angus Bell’s progression as this season moves on will be something to watch for not just for the Tahs but for the Wallabies as well. A solid start for Bell but more difficult exams to come.

As another poster said Mataele was with Crusaders. He was super dynamic until he blew out his ACL a few seasons back. Some athletes need a full 2 years before they regain pre ACL injury strength and flexibility. Before his injury Mataele was ahead of Sevu Reece on the Crusaders wing. If he regains the pre injury form, watch out. Could be a wise move by the Force in signing him.

Super Rugby Pacific Round 1 teams: The star names and debutants in action

The prolonged absence of Hosea and possibly of Fa’amausili will hurt the Rebels, I can see them getting off to a slow start this season.

I am sorry to hear that ozinsa. Seems they did not do well with their international TV rights, I have a mate who lives in the United States and he told me Super Rugby Pacific is only going to be available there on a streaming service that charges US$30/month! Not a good way to grow interest in Super Rugby Pacific in the UK and US.

I’m very intrigued by Tuivasa-Sheck’s appearances with the Blues. My thinking is the centre position is very much up for grabs with the All Blacks so a good showing by RTS with the Blues and he may enter the discussion. In the meantime he should be a good drawing card for the Blues once spectators are allowed back.

Busy schedule and lack of depth hurt a fatigued Nix. They had no energy at the end and that led to Adelaide’s equaliser. Piscopo and Oli Sail have each been two bright lights for Wellington.

Two points dropped for wasteful Wellington after Adelaide legend's son nets late equaliser

A horrible penalty call by Beath deep into the added 30 minutes. Looked like Luan of Palmeiras was moving his hand towards body, had his body partially turned away from the shooter and was less than a metre away. Tough luck to call THAT a penalty in extra time of a world final. In addition, the original call was no penalty, I thought there had to be an obvious error to overturn that? No way in hell was that an obvious error. Show some common sense Chris Beath and whomever was the VAR official!

Late penalty sees Chelsea claim maiden Club World Cup title

Good article to get the excitement built up for the opening round of play. I also am looking forward to the podcast. My darkhorses for this coming year are the Chiefs and Western Force. Not to win the competition but each will be better than expected. And the ex NRL players Vunivalu and Tuivasa-Sheck should both be fascinating to watch to see if they live up to their potential.

All the questions needing answers in Round 1 of Super Rugby Pacific

It must be maddening to be an Italian rugby fan, they’ll make a nice move(s), start to look threatening then will bollox it all up with a bone headed play, a silly penalty, etc. Marcus Smith looks like the real deal, a very skilled 10 who is very good with ball in hand. I think England miss some pace on the wing, like they have with May and could usr the running of a Tuilagi. Do they still need the Vunipolas or are their injury issues too much of a liability?

Finn Russell can be a really enjoyable player to watch when he’s on song, but he’s also still prone to some major mistakes, witness this Wales v Scotland game.

Wales claim Six Nations win over Scotland after tense battle

Enjoyable game and Jaminet’s kicking was decisive. Credit to Ireland who gave France a real tussle. Every breakdown was a battle, reminded me of a Springboks v All Blacks match in that regard. Alldritt and Jelonch were both great for France. I still don’t think Dupont and Ntamack are 100% after Covid which is a scary proposition, meaning France can improve!

France remain undefeated in Six Nations on the back of Melvyn Jaminet's boot

Love drop kick goals, good to see Biggar win this one that way. Even match which could have gone either way but Wales really needed the win after last week. Rees-Zammit has not been much of a factor in these first two Wales games. I thought Wales’ centres played well.

Wales claim Six Nations win over Scotland after tense battle

I really enjoyed both matches today. I love drop kick goals so was happy to see Biggar win the game for Wales that way. But the marquee match was France v Ireland. Looked like France were going to win it comfortably when was 22-7 but Ireland fought back well. Ball in hand this Irish team are enjoyable to watch and they gave France a great battle, every breakdown was fierce in this game. Both teams will welcome the extra week off. Carbery answered some questions and Jaminet is as Harry Jones wrote, possibly the most reliable kicker in world rugby today, even more than Jordie Barrett. That was enjoyable to watch.

Ireland and France battle for supremacy of the north but Sexton loss could swing it

Penaud is very good. Unquestionably there’s a lot of depth on this French team. Is Thomas injured? He does make some mistakes but is enjoyable to watch with his pace and mazy runs. But Alldritt remains for me such a vital player to their success.

Ireland and France battle for supremacy of the north but Sexton loss could swing it

I’m not sure how Ireland will do without Sexton but they’ve needed an alternative to him for years now. Now that he’s finally healthy, this is a great chance for Carbery. Let’s see what he’s made of. I’m a real admirer of Hugo Keenan the Irish fullback, great in the air and full of rugby smarts. And Ringrose, Henshaw and Aki are a great trio of centres. I was not too familiar with either Jaminet or Villiere until last week but both impressed while Aldritt is my favourite 8 from the Northern Hemisphere. Can’t wait to see this match.
