I’m concerned about the batting example of our leadership. No runs from Paine or Head? *shakes head* Terrible.

The Liebke Ratings: Australia vs Pakistan second Test

Yeah, can’t say I agree Cameron – the ebbs and flows of the game…the early pressure from Collingwood leading to turnovers, the arm-wrestle in the second, the picking up of individual efforts at various moments…All of these are vital parts of the game – not just high scoring and perfect skill on display.

I was watching an American livestream his reactions during the game, and he thought it was the best thing ever – he said with absolute sincerity that the spectacle was better than the Superbowl. I’d take his genuine reaction and love and appreciation of what he saw over a cynic any day.

A close grand final does not a classic make

Except of course, it would have been negated by the obvious holding the ball free in front of the Eagle’s goal square that ended up being a goal at the other end to De Goey because of the resulting turnover.

Seriously, we can play these games all day, but does it achieve anything?

The column you were never meant to read: what if Collingwood won?

Makes sense to me, Tim. Thanks for the hard work! How do you think Starc and co are gonna go on this deck?

I think I disagree with you on the extent of the element of luck – I agree there’s an element there, but I think you’re overplaying it.

Otherwise, Starc wouldn’t have bowled there and he wouldn’t have rolled the fingers. He may not have known exactly what was going to happen, but he was definitely aiming for that to happen. And it did.

Happy to agree to disagree – I still think it was a great delivery, especially in the context of the game. Also, there seems to be disagreement on the semantics of “magic”, but I digress…

England's leaders have let them down badly

Admittedly, the “ball of the 21st century” is hyperbolic. Not saying that it’s not.

But I don’t think it was a bad delivery at all. Clearly a plan by Starc to use the pitch.

Otherwise, every spin delivery that hits the footmarks and gets a wicket is just plain luck as well. After all, those too “could have gone anywhere.”

England's leaders have let them down badly

Gotta disagree.

Starc obviously had a plan – bowl wide of the crease, roll his fingers across the ball, perfectly aim at a crack at just the right length…

I mean, there’s a lot of skill involved with that.

The exact nature of the ball’s movement after it hit the crack…sure there’s an element of luck. It *could* have gone anywhere. But, it didn’t go just anywhere, it cannoned into the stumps with Vince not being able to do a damn thing about it.

Starc using the conditions of the pitch to wreak havoc on the batsman, though. That takes skill.

England's leaders have let them down badly

I agree, it’s worse that Cook and Root are getting completely outdone by the newbies like Vince, who was doing well in the circumstances, until he was undone by a piece of Mitch Starc magic.

Speaking of which, who did it better?

My first thought when I saw Starc bowl that ripper was that Mitch Johnson delivery a few years ago. Both absolutely brilliant – who wins?

England's leaders have let them down badly

Even Nostradamus didn’t see that coming.

“Some other things, apart from the ‘headbutt’ business, were said by Australia in the middle – but what they were is staying there,” he said.
“We move on. I hope it’s gone now. I’m not making an issue of it.
“Only if they are said again would the matter go further.
“I’ve not lost any friendships over the last couple of weeks, put it like that.”

Hang on. Whoa whoa whoa, and whoa.

“I’m not making an issue of it. Only if they’re said again would the matter go further.”

Hold on there, Jonny boy. Either something was said that was past the line of acceptability or it wasn’t. Either the Australians said something that needs to have action taken or they didn’t. If it was seriously that bad, you would have, and indeed should have, reported it then and there. Why is there this talk of “if it happens again…” nonsense?

Any instance of behaviour or comments doesn’t suddenly increase to unacceptable the second time around. Deal with it. At the time it occurs. And all of this is even worse when you consider this isn’t about Adelaide but ~Brisbane~ he’s talking about. There’s been a whole other test in between then and now!

What…why…how?

I…I don’t understand the timing or the logic of this nonsense. I’m sensing many are right when they suggest the media is trying to find excuses/distractions from England being 2-0 down in the series.

I was stitched up on 'headbutt': Bairstow

“But I can honestly say the shot I got out to in the second innings had nothing to do with it. I (just) played a bad shot.”

So….if the sledging had nothing to do with his wicket, and had all the metaphorical impact of a Jonny Bairstow head-butt, why is he going on about it?

I was stitched up on 'headbutt': Bairstow

Won’t someone please think of the children!?!

Why can't Australian cricket just play nice?

Well, the issues in the Aussie line-up remain in the batting department. Get that sorted and we can take this show on the road!

Australia vs England: Ashes cricket live scores, blog – 2nd Test, Day 5

Ronan,

It seems to me that with the exception of the first session and a bit to England in their second innings, all the Aussie bowlers have contributed in their own way – Hazelwood’s probably been the most maligned, although he’s made up for it this morning, and then some.

Lyon’s been brilliant – probing a lot of the time, really putting the batsmen under pressure, and looked dangerous every time he bowls.

Cummins has been good, and more than a little unlucky. If some of those chances went to hand or things went a little more his way, he’d have a few more wickets to his name.

And Starc just continues to do his thing, and his first ball delivery just now was absolutely perfect. 12 wickets at 21 – what more do people want?

Seems to me that this is a solid all-round balanced attack, and they’re all capable of firing when needed and definitely can take 20 wickets in a match.

This confirms my belief that you are indeed a Batman-esque supervillian, or at the very least, a supervillian sympathizer, given that your name is an anagram of “liked Bane”…

But is he hitting them well in the nets, Alec?

The futility of looking for logic where there is none

“The name for these three sets of overs? ‘Power plays’. Which raises the question: if everything’s considered a power play, is anything really a power play?”

Evidence perhaps that the ICC is run by Syndrome from the Incredibles movie – “And when everything’s a power play…[pause for effect then shift to dark tone]…nothing will be.”

Tongue was firmly implanted in cheek for that one, Ryan.

Confessions of a West Coast Eagles fan in denial

Dean, I think absolutely that West Coast is a top four side. By that very admission, you’ve been convinced more than a lot of pundits who’ve commented on the Eagles’ success this year!

I’m not sure your arguments hold water in the grand scheme of things. I think Dean N addresses the Hawthorn dilemma well enough. However, the one concession I’d make is that West Coast hasn’t had the recent finals experience that Freo and Hawthorn have. If they adjust well enough, however, they’ve got a shot just like any of the others. They could go out in straight sets, they could sneak through – anything is possible. It all depends on what happens on the day.

Confessions of a West Coast Eagles fan in denial

Good work, Ryan.

I think I was in that doubter category as well, particularly when McKenzie went down before the season started.

What really interested me throughout the season though, was how the goalposts of how good West Coast actually were kept changing every single week. I mean, how many times did we hear the phrase, “This is the next big test for West Coast…”? It was said before the Port Adelaide game, before the Collingwood game, before Adelaide, before Richmond…Oh wait, no, that doesn’t count, the next big test was the BIG MONTH COMING UP! Sydney, Hawthorn and Freo! And yet, even after that big test, winning over two of the top four and losing with respectability to Hawthorn…it still doesn’t seem to count! “I’m still not convinced” continues to be the catchcry of the West Coast doubters.

I think you’re right in respect to a lot of the players – they’ve improved either by dogged determination or finding a position that suits them under Simmo’s game plan and it’s working.

At the very least, this is a brilliant break-out season for Simmo and the players, and next year will be great to watch with players returning and some finals experience under their collective belts.

Can they win the flag this season? I dunno, I’m still not convinced…Finals is the next big test for West Coast…

“Still, how scared of Watson must England be to gift Mitchell Marsh all these wickets? This is a ‘Watson’s Ashes’ scenario I I hadn’t even considered until now..Watson’s Ashes by Proxy. Name me another cricketer who has dominated an Ashes series in such a unique fashion.

You can’t do it. You just can’t.”

Aw, come on now Dan…I’m sure Glenn Maxwell fits that bill somehow.

“That’s the price of genius, you muppet!”

Aaah, the joys.

The Pietersen puzzle

They need me? Wha…?

It may not be 2005, but The Ashes will be a thrilling contest

Wait, wait, wait…Are you saying, Jameswm, that I have to read the *entire* article to get the correct context of what Smith was saying, rather than just assuming what he said based on the article headline?!?

In the words of Tony Stark…”Sounds exhausting.”

England won't come close in Ashes: Smith

Four equates to more of a “pack” than one.
