yet these games were watched by massive crowds in large stadiums across the country

Can all the naysayers just enjoy the Rugby League World Cup?

Looking at the low crowds for the quarter finals I’m pretty sure the majority of the country is indifferent to this tournament.

I mean, if there are so many “fans” of this tournament why aren’t the stadiums packed across the country?

Jason Taumalolo was photographed with the New Zealand flag and jersey as part of the promotion of the world cup. Yet he decides to represent Tonga at the world cup despite playing for the Kiwis less than 12 months ago.

The switch to Tonga may seem “romantic” to the league die hard fans in Australia defending this world cup but you have to admit it looks a bit embarrassing to the rest of the world.

You should asked Fred that question

Mad Monday: There's a new world order in rugby league

Well then, it looks like everyone here is living in denial about how bad the crowds are.

Fred, could you please provide a link backing your claims?

The Wallabies played a routine test match outside of the World cup in London (2am Sydney time on Sunday morning).

It’s not surprising that the Jillaroos outdated the Wallabies on free to air television considering the game was broadcast on Sunday afternoon in the absence of the other football codes. A World Cup game involving two of the top three nations in women’s rugby league on home soil.

You’re not making much sense with your logic bringing in the Tour de France and tennis (I assume you’re talking about the grand slams).

These events you describe are once-in-a-year events representing the absolute pinnacle of these respective sports of cycling and tennis.

So of course, sports fans will watch these events just like how many more sports fans will watch the Rugby World Cup quarter finals etc.

Not sure what’s the specific “soccer” you’re referring too since it would be ridiculous to suggest millions of Australians stay up to watch the standard Premier League match at Saturday midnight. Granted, it would make more sense if you’re referring to a Champions League final or World Cup game.

Fair enough Sleiman, you sound extremely defensive and tad aggressive for my post simply commenting on the numbers in the stadium.

England v PNG was in Melbourne, not exactly rugby league mad country.

England are ranked number three in the world, there are many English expats living in Melbourne. They are playing an elimination game of the world cup against a team supposedly “wowing” the league community with their exciting style of play.

The weather was perfect yesterday on Sunday afternoon. No AFL games. No A-League games. No Ashes.

Very dour game (full credit to Georgia for making Wales play their game) but the last ten minutes of the match was very absorbing.

Huge shame it was ruined by Gatland’s lack of gamesmanship and rightly called out by numerous Welsh Rugby pundits and fans.

The Wrap: England gets the rub but Cheika gets it wrong

As *fantastic as the TV ratings are, can someone explain why the attendances have been so poor (bar the PNG and Tonga-NZL matches)? Not a great look when the quarter finals of the World Cup in an established market are played in front of half empty stadiums.

Tonga-Lebanon 8309 (capacity 18000)

NZL-Fiji 12713 (capacity 34500)

England-PNG 10563 (capacity 29500)

Good morning Geoff, great read.

What’s your opinion (and everyone else’s) on Warren Gatland demanding his two props on the bench to feign cramping in the dying minutes of the Wales-Georgia test match?

IMHO it was an absolute disgrace, Gatland clearly wanting an uncontested scrum five metres outside of their try line (with their replacement prop yellow carded).

Really sad act of gamesmanship on a Rugby field and on social media Welsh fans were clearly upset too.

I’m wondering whether World Rugby will investigate into this and to prevent further episodes in the near future.

Georgia deserved a draw in Cardiff, the calls for an expanded Six Nations (or more Tier 1 test matches) will only grow stronger now.
