Would like to have seen him get a farewell match and think he deserves it. Change that “g” to a “r”. Problem solved.

Wagner's last opera: NZ veteran to call it quits after Australia series

I’ve got three suggestions…off, middle or leg.

Cummins cleans up again but Pakistan recover from collapse with wagging tail frustrating Aussies

— COMMENT DELETED —

Weather they like it or not, England only have themselves to blame for Australia being raining Ashes champs

And we lost one wicket under “scoreboard pressure”

All eyes on the skies as Labuschagne ton, Manchester rain gives Aussies a shot at great escape

I am not criticising Stokes at all. What I’m saying is time was the key, not runs. Imagine if it’s a draw with Aus 9 down? Do you think Stokes will be criticised for batting on?

I disagree. This is a “must win” for England and do do so, they had to chance their arm given the forecast. Speaking to an English mate at the end of day two, I predicted Stokes would declare at lunch on day three being somewhere around 200 ahead. From memory, I think they were high 180’s in front. They needed time to take 10 wickets and the 4 they got on day 3 could easily have been 5 or 6 had they declared at lunch. Day 4 was expected to be a washout and day 5 not much better. Remember this is a side that backs themselves to chase anything and doesn’t settle for a draw. Their best chance was to declare early. That being said, they could well still win this.

Bad grammar?

Warner, Head or Harris to open, Green vs Marsh, Boland or Hazlewood, Murphy worthy? Aussies facing selection dilemmas

I reckon the Warner problem could easily have been addressed back in February. CA released every man and his dog to play IPL including Warner. Given Warner’s record in England, I would have insisted he go and play County cricket should he want to be considered for the Ashes squad. Instead, he dictates his preferred journey towards retirement, goes and earns the big bucks whilst others vying for his position do the hard yards. Failure of management.

Warner, Head or Harris to open, Green vs Marsh, Boland or Hazlewood, Murphy worthy? Aussies facing selection dilemmas

Warner did an adequate job in the first two on slower pitches. Headingly was just horrible, not so much his going cheaply, but the manner in which he did. Carbon copy 2019 demonstrating zero learnings. Head is too valuable in the middle to be elevated. For me, open with Marsh and give him an unrestricted licence. A quick 20 or 30 has to be better than what we know Warner will produce. Old Trafford swings around plus the tail needs strengthening. Neser for Boland.

The toss and conditions are uncontrollable. Adapt or perish. What we can do is fix the controllables:
1. Drop Warner
2. Dry up their tail easy runs..set attacking fields and bowl at the stumps.
3. Strengthen our tail batting.

Khawaja
Marsh

UK View: Aussies suffer ‘poetic justice’ for Bairstow incident as England deliver huge ‘psychological blow’

There was a good article in yesterday’s guardian re Bazball.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jun/13/bazball-unpacked-england-test-cricket-analysis-ashes

Boland and Hazlewood get the nod ahead of Starc, as Stokes elects to bat first on dry pitch

A Freudian slip?

Ashes Scout: Aussies set to make bold call on Hazlewood for WTC final, Brearley backs Stokes’ gung-ho approach

Wouldn’t surprise me if the captain had a bit of input too. Pretty sure a while back Bancroft went close to insinuating the bowlers had prior knowledge re JoBerg. If so, such treachery would be hard to tolerate in some circles.

Ashes squad announced: Marsh gets surprise recall, Warner avoids axe but two openers picked as cover, Morris out

I just don’t get it. We all know how bad Warner is in English conditions against swing bowling and the dukes ball. I’d imagine Warner knows it too. Why on earth is he swanning around in the IPL rather than getting a good two months conditioning in the County setup? And if he couldn’t bring himself to take that decision, why on earth was he not directed to do so? The arrogance is breathtaking and does a huge disservice to his teammates and to the bloke’s doing the hard yards trying to earn a spot.

Warner 'at the mercy of selection': Bailey refuses to guarantee veteran's spot as Harris leapfrogs Renshaw

Warner Test Career Averages

Overall 46.98
Playing in Australia 84.98
Playing Overseas 35.97
Against England in Australia 51.74
Against England in England 26.31

When will Warner and Khawaja call time, and why does that matter?

I was quite happy for them to continue batting in the 1st innings taking full advantage of a good pitch. Expected it to start breaking up on day three bringing our spinners into play. Absolutely did not expect the magnificent reverse to be the dominant factor but clearly, the brains trust did. Apparently, the bowlers held a clinic before leaving Oz purely to concentrate on reverse swing. Agree with the decision not to enforce the follow on. The bowlers had a quick turnaround from the last test marathon, it’s hot and humid plus they will have another short break before the third test. 10-12 overs of quick runs this morning will demoralise Pakistan and leave plenty of time for reverse and spin to clean up.

'I'm astonished by that': Cummins makes another huge call after Swepson and Starc destroy Pakistan, Aussies power ahead

You lost me at the opening paragraph.. “The dismissal of Justin Langer has a lot of people in uproar regarding player power” He wasn’t dismissed, he resigned.

The captain should be able to sack the coach

Yep…Dipak Patel. Opened the bowling in the 1992 WC against Australia.

'Exact opposite of Langer': The intensely private Andrew McDonald and what will change with him in charge

The report doesn’t mention a NSW cartel. Just a “figurehead”

Put down the pitchforks and everyone calm down about Justin Langer

Reported in The Guardian yesterday by Ali Martin, cricket correspondent. “Three nights out from the fifth Test in Hobart a group that included the captain, Pat Cummins, David Warner, the assistant coaches, Michael Di Venuto and Andrew McDonald, plus other backroom staff members, met at a bar called The Den in Salamanca and discussed who they would like to replace Langer. As reported in the Guardian, a head coach like Trevor Bayliss, renowned for not sweating the small stuff, is the type of figurehead they are hoping for.”

Put down the pitchforks and everyone calm down about Justin Langer

I really can’t see that Langer has done much wrong. He took over the team at a very low point, worked hard to modify behaviour, insisted on elite fitness, made ruthless culls (eg Renshaw and Khawaja) did a great job in integrating the sandpaper boys back into the side, stood by emerging players and retained the Ashes away. The big blemish was India last season. Without being inside the dressing room, it’s hard to gauge how difficult the reported intensity, mood swings etc would be to handle and in fairness, I would quickly be over the homilies and zen positivity. That being said, he appears to have listened to the criticism and the team results speak for themselves. Although he’s been involved in some inspired selections this season, I think he should remove himself from the selection panel. I see conflict in a coach addressing performance issues and future selection. By all means, let him have input into the selection process but not a vote. The team is obviously in a good place atm but going forward, the big challenge is improving performance overseas. I think he’s done enough to be given a crack.

'Let's cut through the crap': Cummins in spotlight for failure to throw considerable weight behind Langer

Read somewhere he struggles to back up in County games too. Which beggars the question, why was he awarded a central contract and why was he selected for this tour when he hasn’t put in the work to get himself fit enough to do his job?

FLEM'S VERDICT: Here's how you can shake the nightwatchman job forever, Scotty

I was reading some of the comments from the England greats yesterday and it got me thinking, is this lot really “the best 18 red ball squad”? Had a quick look at some of the players in the first class competition (18 Counties) and easily identified some prospects worth further investigation. Am sure there must be more in the second tier competition (19 Counties). I might have a go at a piece for discussion and we’ll see if we can come up with a decent side for the future. That being said, squad selection is only one component contributing to the disastrous state of English/Welsh cricket. Competition scheduling, Dukes ball, Captaincy, team selection, fielding etc are but a few. One more that’s not mentioned much is central contracts. England are the best paid test cricketers in the world and quite frankly, they shouldn’t be. I sense complacency. Scrap central contracts, pay them a base salary and if they want to earn the big bucks, then exceed the kpi’s.

FLEM’S VERDICT: Starc's new weapon reduced Poms to scrambled dregs

I’ve got nothing to back it up but I’ve got a feeling that pink ball coming out of Cam Green’s hand is going to provide plenty of problems for the batters. We’ll see.

Hazlewood officially ruled out of second Test, Warner doubtful

I read somewhere (BBC I think) that after the toss, Cummins went back to the dressing room and told the bowlers had he won the toss, he was going to put England in to bat as he backed the bowlers to knock them over cheaply. Don’t know if this is true or not but if it is, what a masterstroke.
