I went to a school where we played union(loved playing it and still follow it occasionally) as a sport. Even though this was school policy, for some reason everyone supported league like myself. Even though most high schools were playing union in my area it didn’t translate into becoming union supporters. Most gravitated to League in winter in Sydney. In spite of playing certain school sports it doesn’t result in following that sport post school. The scene is changing. Bums on seats doesn’t mean superiority of the code just the same as getting AFL into schools doesn’t mean its going to take over.
Whats interesting is that the 3 League states NSW, Qld and ACT have over half the population and this doesn’t include NZ. At the moment the NRL is winning the audience battle and this is what the AFL wants. AFL may have more states but the majority of people are overwhelmingly exposed to NRL. This is a major advantage at the moment to the NRL. NRL is the most popular football code for over half of the population of Oz! The NRL can take their time expanding because they have a superior audience for advertising dollars and this is what is supporting the game, not bums on seats. This is the rivers of gold for the codes. Advertising is carrying sport and the top dollar goes to the most popular rating sports. At the moment it is the NRL.
For some reason some AFL supporters have this missionary zeal to convert Sydneysiders to AFL and produce spurious facts to show how successfull they are spreading “the Word” with articles like this one. AFL will never be dominant in Sydney as its a different audience. Its not a religion here. Its just one of many games that some like and follow.
I was OS last year and was really suprised at the popularity of League and Union. Was in the backblocks of France and went to a pub where they were playing Union on TV.(this happened a few times. Was suprised because I thought that soccer would dominate) When they realised I was an Aussie they started talking League. Sorry but no one knew about AFL.
Each to their own but don’t try to ram your code down my throat with “Fake Facts”! Enjoy your own sport!

Why the NRL can't compete with the AFL in Sydney

All players need to be swapped prior to the season starting. If a swapped player is injured during the season then their temporary club should wear the consequences without affecting the other club. Its the luck of the draw. No player should be swapped during the season as it opens too many questions and issues.

NRL loan deals are the next evolution in player movements

Could have needed some help this arvo

Regardless of today, Jason Taylor has won his battle with Robbie Farah

There were 18000 Robbie supporters out there this arvo. Standup ovation for him. Didn”t see any anti Farah signs out there. Maybe you should get your facts straight. Maybe the scenes were cgi images by the pro Robbie brigade

Regardless of today, Jason Taylor has won his battle with Robbie Farah

Agree totally. The icing on the cake is his ability to make critical signings eg matt ballin. No need to worry about the hooking position next year as Taylor has this well covered . Drives a SOO hooker out of the club while still paying the majority of his wage next year. Matt can play a couple of games if fit or use a player who has had one game in first grade and/or a winger who wouldn’t be in most first grade sides. Can’t wait for more signings to strengthen the team over the summer to show what a great coach the tigers have. No wonder the tigers are trying to get Farah to sign a confidentiality clause.

Regardless of today, Jason Taylor has won his battle with Robbie Farah

Not much loss in dropping the state hooker! He topped the tackle count and his kick led to a try. I thought you put your best players on and he’s still one of the best for the tigers. Halatau has been a great servant for the club but is not in the same league as Farah. Elijah Taylor is playing great at lock so why play him out of position. JT is paid hundreds of thousands so if he can’t find a way to get his best players on the field its time to go, fall on his sword and admit he’s not up to coaching a first grade side.

Robbie Farah dropped to New South Wales Cup

Taylor is hopeless. He coached to hit up for 5 tackles and then an inneffectual bomb. Tactics were so bad even the players didn’t chase the ball. Embarrassing stuff. They got rid of Payton who they should bring back to replace Taylor. Take a chance on a younger coach without baggage eg TAYLOR , CLEARY! Hopefully Harry will buy the club and get rid of the rubbish board as well.

Taylor says Farah to stay, play at Tigers

Personally I love NRL and soccer. I have Optus pay tv with fox sports. If the HAL was lost to Fox I would still subscribe but if the NRL was lost by Fox I would cancel my pay TV with Optus straight away. Having said that because the HAL is in the warmer months and doesn’t compete with NRL/AFL it is only going to get stronger without having to compete with the other football codes. Football all year round! I love it! I can’t see why people don’t understand why the HAL is more popular in ratings than the EPL. I love English soccer but we live in Australia. We relate to our local teams, not some teams from far out places we have never been to and unlikely to ever get to. The standard overall may not be as good as the EPL but we have had some great matches and the quality is improving. Many EPL matches are boring (as with the HAL). Why stay up late at night to watch a rubbish match . Maybe many from migrant backgrounds want to hold onto memories from the “old country” which is fine. The HAL is not going away but will only get stronger whereas overseas leagues popularity will decrease as the migrant population gets older. Just saying….

Can Australia sustain a fragmented media rights market?
