That really frustrates me. Like I said, I don’t support a Hughes selection but at least he’s got runs. At least Doolan hasn’t been tried and failed before, and Bailey was poor but you could argue his ODI record shows he’s worth persevering with, as well as the fact the replacements aren’t ready.
Marsh was miserable against India and has gone downhill ever since. No runs or form to his name and he’s back in the side. I can’t think of any kind of way to defend him.

It definitely becomes a lot murkier once they’re established players. A higher avg doesn’t necessarily mean a greater player. When they’re pushing for selection the Test side I feel like there should be a great weight of runs behind them as a minimum, outside of any insane injury crisis.

Oldcastle seemed to do alright to do alright in 2013 despite Bennett having ‘lost it’ due to his elderly signings, whilst the ‘youth’ of the West Tigers were lucky to coincide with the ineptitude of Parramatta.
If Tuqiri isn’t up to it, he won’t get a game. If he’s the best available, pick him. I see no reason why he should be judged before a ball has even been kicked. The Knights couldn’t win a game without Bedsy, and he was older and in a more physically demanding position than Lote.

Melbourne’s lineup is absolutely star-studded (no pun intended). It’d be a failure to not finish the season in 1st and at least make the Grand Final.

Don’t underestimate pride, the cash and the desire for silverware. I’m thinking a few clubs might try the bluff, and send over a strong side as to surprise those who went with the bare minimum.
The ante is going to be continually upped if this becomes regular.

Well, that’s certainly a lot of interesting stuff Brad. Glad you shared it with me. I think severity of concussion could possibly be something to be considered also? 92% is crazy high. If the AFL’s concussion guidelines are written by a man who helped write a paper that said there was a 10-15 fold higher rate of concussion (so a serious expert) yet only 1.1 miss a game, perhaps the concussions being experienced aren’t as severe. I’m no expert myself on how concussions work and whether there is a great range of damage though.

Potential is overrated, we should be chasing results today, not results in three years. The future of course should never be disregarded, but to pick a side based on future prospects is a recipe for disaster.

I’d say to expect the same of concussions in Aussie sport IS ridiculous. The concussion rates are much nowhere near as high. Playing with a helmet reduces the onus on a player to protect their head as well as increasing the area for the head to get hit.
However, I don’t believe that nullifies the rest of your point. Concussion should be treated very seriously for the players welfare.

This. FC runs have never been an issue for Phil, it’s when he gets on the big stage and cannot replicate it, which has happened thrice, which makes Lehmann gunshy in my view.
