I can kind of see what you’re saying, though I’m not sure that you could statistically expect all-time greats at a rate of those you mentioned from Antigua (roughly one per 30,000 people at the time they were playing) – if that was happening, at the present population of their constituent countries, the West Indies team would have about 200 legends all playing at once right now!

COMMENT: What's the point in playing the Windies? Only the future of Test cricket itself

Steve Smith doesn’t see an issue with this.

Khawaja injury revealed as opener in doubt for Brisbane Test, Adelaide curator unimpressed with own pitch

I mean, Australia are good. The only team they don’t reliably beat are India, and they are the richest and most powerful cricketing nation on earth. It would be great if WI were more competitive, but it’s sadly not the case nowadays, and they’re unlikely to return to their halcyon days.

This was an interesting article – thanks for putting it together. It seems like there are a few records that could all fall simultaneously in the right conditions – if a pitch was truly unplayable, you could see the lowest innings score, shortest test and the Bannerman all fall in the same game (and maybe Laker’s record too, if one bowler happened to have a bit of luck).
Regarding the record for longest career by time, it’s bold of you to assume that James Anderson won’t still be grumpily sending down outswingers in home tests for England at sixty…

Plenty of Test cricket's records look safe, but which ones can still be broken?

I’m guessing this is a nod to Shamar Joseph’s impressive performance over the last few days? If nothing else has come from this match for the Windies, they’ve found a real talent in him.

I don’t know that I would agree with your last paragraph. Remember that last season, Veart dropped Irankunda to the reserves for not meeting internal expectations of younger players (packing away at training and helping with kits from memory). I’m sure he’ll get some sympathy (the ref made an error in not calling what was a fairly obvious foul), but I think he’ll also get a talking-to about keeping his cool even when the ref makes a blunder.

Sorry Adelaide fans, but Nestory Irankunda deserved to be sent off

An odd little statistic – every England player made a score in double figures, while no New Zealand player did. I’m not sure how often this has happened, but it can’t be common.

Widest of margins! Black Caps get revenge on England as records tumble: 'We're not robots, sometimes you don't play well'

As DTM has said, it’s most likely meant as a comment about the size of NZ as a country relative to the size of the other countries in the tournament (and perhaps a little about the fact that cricket is NZ’s second sport rather than its first). Belgium punch above their weight in football, for example, because they’re a small country but they’re good. It can also be applied to a team that is historically not noted for being very good and is doing unexpectedly well, but I don’t think that’s how it’s being used here.

Exactly – you can make the team and get some deserved recognition on the back of a good personal season that would likely be lost to the record books if you play for a below-average team.

Wings take flight, 'flat out error' on Dusty, veterans snubbed: Winners and losers from the 2023 AFL All-Australian team

True, T20 franchise cricket has a long way to go before it is considered in the same way as top-flight club football, and even in football I think most players value the highest international honours over the highest club honours.

(Penultimate means second-last rather than best, BTW – players might well consider T20 as a second-last stop on their career progression nowadays, a nice little payday before going back to play district/county as the elder statesman.)

David getting Australian ODI debut without a state contract shouldn't have been allowed to happen

There wouldn’t need to be an AA team if it was a sport played internationally – it would just be the national team. Ultimately it’s a recognition of excellence among the players in the league, and it’s a fairer assessment across the different positions than the (notoriously mid-heavy) Brownlow. I’m sure it doesn’t mean nearly as much to players as a premiership (even though the same number of players win a premiership each year as are selected in the AA team), but it’s good to recognise players who excel even when their teams don’t.

I remember the media in the UK during Euro 2020(1) – they were naturally focused on the important issues of the day, chiefly PM Johnson’s relaxing of COVID restrictions, and the papers certainly didn’t cover their front pages with pictures of the team, in victory or ultimate defeat.

Were you in Australia during that series? Broad didn’t cop any more than the other English players, it was a beat-up by the tabloids (owned by the same bloke who runs most of them in the UK). Manufactured outrage, nothing more.

There might be 1 million girls and women playing football there (even that might be a stretch), but there are only about 5 million women between the ages of 18 and 30 in England, and one in five isn’t a professional footballer.

If he’s celebrating winning a battle of wits with Davey Warner… 😂

By the time England tour Australia again they won’t have won an Ashes match in the country in nearly 15 years 😁

The bloke isn’t too bright.

I can see how he would be bitter with his lot, having to go through life with a face like a boiled ham.

Fowler seems to just know where to be – it took some great defending and more than a slice of luck for France to keep her from scoring (she must have had half a dozen shots on target).

I was worried that Arnold might drop her focus after that miss, and that it was a risk for her to take the kick, but not for a second – she did an awesome job.

An entirely fair point. And marginally lower than his away average.

There’s already a bat template – overall length not greater than 965mm, overall width not greater than 108mm, overall thickness not greater than 67mm, edge thickness not greater than 40mm.

As for the ball, the Duke seems to be a piece of junk, agreed.

India also have the firepower on flat pitches if a pitch does become docile.

Warner improved his average in England, remarkably (25.74 before the series, 28.50 during).

It wasn’t a mistake not taking Morris, he had a flare-up of a back injury in late April and couldn’t play (no bowling at all for four to six weeks following the injury, managed return to bowling following scans at that point).
