An article that’s arrived by third class SEA MAIL ???

Australia slide down in new FIFA rankings

“Australia have 21 points after eight games and are a level above their rivals ahead of a crucial slate of upcoming games.”

This was the case at the conclusion of the second round of qualification, which was SEVEN MATCHES AND MORE THAN A YEAR AGO.

We are now third in our group and no certainty for direct qualification, facing the dreaded playoffs against another Asian side and then a North American (CONCACAF) side.

Something has gone horribly wrong in the production of this article.

Australia slide down in new FIFA rankings

TBH it’s not the worst sample size I’ve seen on these sorts of things at least at the overall level. You couldn’t read anything into the club level results, but there is certainly interest at the broader level, especially with most overall results showing a pretty clear result.

The Roar’s NRL fan survey: The results are in!

I’ve had a crack at the sample size for this survey … how did I do?

Sea Eagles – 202
Raiders – 113
Broncos – 91
Cowboys – 49
Eels – 41
Dragons – 37
Bulldogs – 36
Tigers – 30
Rabbitohs – 29
Roosters – 28
Storm – 21
Sharks – 20
Knights – 18
Titans – 16
Panthers – 14
Warriors – 11
Total – 756

Is that allowed? Shouldn’t it be China-they?

Six alternate nicknames for 'Chinaman'

Not sure what an “18C type” is or how I fit this stereotype … oops, didn’t think we dealt in stereotypes these days … strike 1.

You are the one attempting to make the case for change. The argument is yours to make, not those operating under existing circumstances … strike 2.

The fact that you have had to resort to ad hominem attacks (“your whole rotten ediface”) demonstrates not only that you have lost the argument, but have very little in your argument to begin with … strike 3.

I do hope your quest … whatever it may be … brings some ray of sunshine into your life. Unfortunately it appears none has reached you yet.

Toodle pip!

Well the fact that you have asserted it is broken must therefore lead to a joint parliamentary enquiry on the matter, the engagement of an appropriately skilled and commensurately remunerated consultant (after a comprehensive and funded RFP process), consultation with a range of cultural, linguistic and sporting academics and other experts, the commissioning of a phased report on the matter to go through general public review and comment, peer review, consideration of potential alternatives, cross-matching against registered trademarks, business names, available web domains, etc., the release of a white paper on the matter and ultimately a series of recommendations to government that they may or may not accept.

I stand corrected.

Or you could just leave it as is and point all that time, effort and money to worthwhile causes like paying off our ballooning government debt. Although I do admite things like securing the financial future of future generations is typically not considered “progressive”.

Polysyllabic enuff for ya?

Not broken. Don’t fix it.

Possibility to be 4th in the rankings at the end of Miami and not much more than a free ride in terms of points all the way to Wimbledon. Anything like a good showing in the clay court season and the French and he could be hitting Wimbledon ranked 3. Djokovic and Murray will be looking over their shoulders from that point, especially if Federer defends/improves his Wimbledon points.

Federer's incredible path back to No.1

Correct.

Mate, good on you for putting this article out there. I look forward to seeing you writing more on the wonderful topic of Test cricket in the future!

It’s sometimes hard to be a Test cricket fan, whether as a 14 year old, or someone who has a few more miles on the clock such as myself. It’s a time consuming beast and one that can be difficult to follow without that time investment. Nowadays I don’t get to actually watch anywhere near the amount I’d like to, even when played in Australia, but still take the most immense joy in whatever time I can get to genuinely absorb a great contest between bat and ball.

Stick with it, and I can assure you it will reward you over time!

The life of a young Test cricket fan

Write off Manly at your peril. The side has been weaker than usual in recent years and the off-field drama is not helping … mind you, the story is nowhere near as big as is being played out in some media quarters. The media portrayal of the situation is as much about certain individuals attempting to settle some scores with Bob Fulton as it is about what is really going on.

Never forget that in 70 years, the dreaded spoon has never headed across the Spit Bridge!

NRL upsets suggest just about any team could play finals footy

Yep, happy to come in under radar and build throughout the the season. Certainly not expecting anything great this year, but after two years of rubbish it’s time to kick start the next machine for the next push. Six years since our last premiership is starting to feel like a drought!

Very interesting indeed. What do you do if you are India?

Another dust bowl that as we saw in Pune and almost in Bangalore can catch India out if they’re not quite at the top of their game?

Another low and slow but actually fairly innocuous pitch (at least for most of the match) per Ranchi with a few to bat, bat, bat, but risk a draw?

Or go for a “sporting pitch” that is perhaps more like Australian conditions (as least as much as you will ever get in India) that gives the best chance of a “fair” result, but is giving away some competitive advantage to Australia?

Are India prepared to risk losing the series in order to win it? Or will a drawn series at least save face at the end of a 13 Test (!) home season?

Plucky Australia banish demons of 2016

Indeed this was a mighty performance. It’s been a long time since Australia has shown that much resolve the save a match. I really can’t remember the last time we managed a performance of such resolve when so clearly behind in the game. Marsh and Handscomb must really take a bow for their performances, although the contributions of Smith and Renshaw in the morning shouldn’t be forgotten.

More importantly, what a series this has been! Pulsating, old school Test cricket throughout the three matches so far with very little separating the teams. We’ve seen so far the way Test cricket should be played over a full five days … or more to the point 15 sessions … and how a good/bad session or two can change the entire complexion of the match. Can’t wait for the final match.

Speaking of the final match, I seem to recall there was discussion before the series began that the typical conditions in Dharmasala are those most likely to suit the Australian attack. Is this correct? Are we witnessing the execution of the only series plan that was seen as feasible before the start, namely to find a way to get to the final match 1-1 and pull of a famous victory in more favourable conditions? Will certainly be interesting to see the pitch discussion unfold over the next few days …

Your theory probably has some legs, but I don’t think Federer will be taking cues from Kyrgios.

Federer's new winning ways come straight from Kyrgios' book

As others have mentioned, this is an outstanding article. This absolutely summarises all the frustrations Australian cricket fans have had for years at so many baffling selections and ultimately selection errors. Points 6 through 10 all resonate with me and are the exact reason there is simply not the level of consistency expected in personnel and therefore the balance and longer term performance of the team.

As you mentioned, all these gut feel selections are ridiculous. Where is the accountability here? Any other business would require appropriate analysis in support of decisions. By all means, there is always room for “a gamble” but when these gambles have such a low strike rate … especially in the “all rounder” category … it might be time to consider a change of tipster.

The ten problems with Australia's selectors

This is the system I would go for, except that if it’s still a draw after GP then it’s just 1 point each and the third point goes begging.

Or if you want to have full points always allocated, you can have 4 points up for grabs ..
4 points for a clean win
3 points for a GP win
2 points for a post-GP draw
1 point for a GP loss
0 points for a clean loss

The NRL should reward effort, not just results

Just because someone keeps saying it, doesn’t mean it’s true.

Peter Johnston! That’s the bloke. Thought it was Peter someone. That guy put on some fearsome hits. Possibly the highest strike rate of bell ringers of all of them.

I personally plan on being alive for the next 14 years to see the mighty Sea Eagles do just that! Which will also deal with number 3 on your list.

Eight NRL records that will never be broken

Sorry, BigJ, just realised I left off the second part of my comment. That is that if the game is played long enough, someone will get to 22/exceed Souths’ tally. Just simply a matter of time. Like rolling a 16-sided dice … any given number will eventually come up 22 times.

Eight NRL records that will never be broken

No, definitely not Les Davidson or Mark Carroll. I can picture the guy, just can’t think of his name.
