Best advice I ever heard; You learn nothing by talking. Your opinion only gets stronger when you consider another side of the topic. Anything less is just adding insult to injury.

Where once they entered touching the flag,
Of patriotism they no longer brag,
A summer of causes seems to have woken,
Replacing skill sets neglected or broken.

Outside leg they stand,
Useless willow in their hand,
Hand wringing ‘invaders’ of this native land,
Gondwana, a whole day left for duty!

Test Mortem: Green’s golden status fading as batting unit becomes fragile, Windies need help to kick on from Gabba glory

Agreed, Pierro. The accepted Test apprenticeship is about 20 matches. Steve Waugh the most obvious, but Marsh also has come back more in tune since his first 20 too.
I think the elephant in the room is Green is batting a spot too high at this stage. Regardless of Head’s king pair in this one, he should progress to 4 after his apprenticeship, then Marsh and Green.

Test Mortem: Green’s golden status fading as batting unit becomes fragile, Windies need help to kick on from Gabba glory

Shamar has shown the benefit of bowling at the Australian weakness; technique on the stumps! Shamar’s pace and accuracy is a breath of fresh air to go with Nortje and Coetzee and the heart of Jansen. Tests will be refreshed if the ICC future tour program recognizes the emergence of talent, only now playing two test series!

Come on though Paul, Superstar? After five minutes? You may as well stick Hartley in that bracket too!
What were the names of those two guys who took 16 in a Test and that footage gets rolled out as ‘anyone remember these guys?’ Who was that other Brathwaite everyone was raving about a coupla years ago when he burst on the scene and immediately went to franchise oblivion?
Love Shamar’s enthusiasm, but the reality of WI cricket is a franchise will throw a bucketload at him, while the WI board hope he stays in Tests as they can’t match the payments.

Shamar's a superstar: Windies rookie destroys Australia with all-time great spell to break 27-year drought in cliffhanger

Congratulations Aussies, like Ben, I didn’t see it coming until the final either. All hail the curators! A cricket wicket for both bat and ball. Bowlers of both sides rewarded for their ability to use their skills of sideways movement and decision to bring the stumps into play. The tournament was a story of 2 different wicket styles. Flat track 400 run decks – bat first, game over. All the enjoyable games came with scores in the 200’s because contests are the boon of the neutral cricket fan. Thankfully for the tournament decider the track provided a contest and the Aussies played on a similar track in the semi. That’s where my meagre optimism grew, as the Indians were gorging on flat track average fillers, while their brilliant bowling from Bumrah, Shami, Siraj were showing the Aussies the stumps were still a vital component.

I knew Australia's bunch of 'no-hopers' couldn't win the World Cup, right up until I knew they would

You’re right, he’s never been known to make them when it matters against tough opposition, that will be his legacy, but that was easily the best innings I’ve seen him play, as he started with timed straight drives and then built. Only the ‘group’ know if he got paid out on for his ‘typical Maxi’ first ball hoik duck in the previous game, as the mental side of the game has always been his achilles heel. Interestingly the next innings is usually more focused, and Maxwell tragics then claim unfair criticism for everything else. He has a large enough body of work now to show that trend. None of which takes away from the actual innings he played, it was worthy of the praise it got.

Bats hit crazy distances: Joy of six diminishes as modern chunks of willow turn average batters into master blasters

Hard to argue that one with tracks and conditions producing batting totals from tough 220’s to 420’s! As expected, they know their conditions well. If you watch the international guys who’ve played a fair amount of IPL, they’ve thrived too. It seems obvious that as teams, most of the rest are playing one speed plams. The ridiculous article a day or so ago saying there’s no place for Smith and Marnus with the sloggers fit now, is flawed. Does Marnus or Smith get replaced if the next game is on a road? Might make sense. Do the the sloggers who were out for their own reasons, stay out, if on a tough pitch requiring footwork and graft to build a defendable total if the two cement foot openers go early? Might make sense. Surely the Kohli innings compared to the Saffers wrong line swipes shows the logic of playing the conditions on their merits and using a whole squad to provide a winning campaign!

Bats hit crazy distances: Joy of six diminishes as modern chunks of willow turn average batters into master blasters

Not sure how Maxi can hit it just with his left, when he can’t hold onto a golf cart with both hands successfully, apparently!

Bats hit crazy distances: Joy of six diminishes as modern chunks of willow turn average batters into master blasters

Interesting how the games which have held the most interest for non parochial viewers both at the game and watching around the world at this WC have been at grounds where conditions create nuance and that score of 260 you mentioned are fought hard for. When the bowling conditions can’t be completely ironed out providing optimum six hitting, even the mishits aren’t going for six on average, they’re spooned or skied just outside the square. The Indians, at home, lead all comers with bowled and lbw’s, which might tell us something about using different methods on different wickets, rather than one speed cement foot slogs. I’m sure the Poms would like a second shot at the planning for these wicket variations! As for Maxwell hitting it outta the ground with only his left hand, I’d suggest that might be an over exaggeration, as he didn’t seem to be able to hold on to a golf cart successfully with either, or two hands apparently!

Bats hit crazy distances: Joy of six diminishes as modern chunks of willow turn average batters into master blasters

‘Bowlers used to get riled up and view getting hit for a six as a crushing blow to the ego’.Yeah, it’s a batsman’s game. Nobody wants a perfect inswinger, outswinger, wrong ‘un to interfere with their regular dose of cement footed slogs, or top edges which apparently bring the spectators in! Those deliveries would mean the need to play cricket with that slab of timber in your hand, rather than walk in and give a five minute cameo! The ‘entertainment’ is rapidly overtaking the actual cricket. I mean far be it for fielding teams to think about field placements hoping to have a skied opportunity from an eyes shut hoik, you get behind in the over rate and it’s mandatory open gates for slogging! Not to mention the great entertainment addition of an ear splitting klaxon anything up to an hour after a delivery to denote a no ball and free hit, because the hat rack doesn’t call them anymore, because apparently the crease has become invisible to them now that a camera is available! Apparently the ICC hasn’t worked out yet how to get a big enough pit to store the hats yet and a green buzzer installed for players to appeal with to the ‘umpire’ in the OH&S friendly replay booth. No doubt it’s coming, this is after all just entertainment in 2023, where nuanced skill determining winning and losing is irrelevant and the six reigns supreme. Not sure how you just shrug your shoulders and run back to your mark to avoid a penalty and still think your playing cricket!

Heard Athers say the new contracts came out mid tournament with a number of the aging players in this side signed to 3 year deals, possibly to combat the franchise contracts available to them! Doesn’t say much for the Blast & Hundred if they can’t produce talent around Brook in the next 3 years and need Moeen, Root, Wood etc to reverse their fortunes on the wrong side of 35! Don’t know how much fun that actually will be!

I’ve been amused at the drivel coming from the best of recent past and present of the T20/CWC champions & Bazballers of late. Seems they’ve spent more time with motivational coaches rather than cricket coaches! Maybe if they spent more time dissecting the vastly different conditions they’ve needed to contend with and devised cricket plans which didn’t involve ‘play at breakneck speed, rinse, repeat’, they may have overcome one or two of those best teams! But when you have ‘adults’ in the stand doing the chumbawunga because of the one good shot you played in a fortnight, you’ll kid yourself you’re an entertainer with a 5 minute cameo spot, rather than a professional cricketer with the ability to fight thru a tight couple of overs chasing an achievable total.

Agreed, gotta reckon he’d learn more by playing in the large range of conditions on offer, than praying Stokes on one leg will keep the mathematical chance alive! Brook learning one batting speed doesn’t cut it, has to be a compliment to a fully fit Stokes in the next campaign. You’d expect he’ll be given a dead rubber chance and Stokes an earlier knee op.

Apparently the writer doesn’t understand sarcasm! Sportsmen who put their reputation on the line every time they take the field, expected to dissect the pictures we all saw, in pointless pressers for gormless lanyard wearers who ask banal irrelevances wanting a ‘scoop’ to justify their all expenses paid junket to a major sporting event? Yeah, I’d be sarcastic too! Actually, I just was!

What a tool. Trying to drum up commentary roles by the sound of it! Love his utter contradictions, even with months to think about it. “You let the umpires make the decision.’ says this sporting sage. After a 20 year career you’d reckon he’d have worked out a way to hone that ‘belief’ into actions as he walks thru the Long room, instead of being influenced by Nigel Blathering-Entitlement and then firing at the Aussie Captain who’s fully aware that you just made a hypocrite and laughing stock of yourself….to compound the same result of the pudding you passed who was looking at the well manicured live ‘floor’, apparently in anger, rather than embarrassment that he’d been done in the same way he stumped an opponent when playing for his county! Of course the whole thing is typical of victim England, who then move from accepting the umpire has the decision to make, to some esoteric spirit of the game, even they admit they can’t define. But hey, Bazball is for the fun of it and apparently everyone must play to their ever changing agenda!

Same old Broady, always bleating: Hard to take Stuart's 'absolute disgrace' claims seriously

Best innings he’s played for Australia, shot of the night wasn’t the circus reverse pull, it was the straight drive for 4 at the beginning of his innings. That shows he can react and take an opponent apart. When he preempts he misfires, when he hits thru the line he is difficult to bowl to. Australia’s ‘mid tournament’ form improvement seems to coincide with the depth of the opponent, let’s hope the mindset is the same against the Kiwi’s and the Aussies remember what Maxwell said on the ground after his innings. Credit given where due, though you can only play the opponent you’re given and the form gained for both Maxwell and Zampa will be important for Australia against opponents with more depth.

Marsh's Kohli drop cruels Aussies as Indian star overcomes hosts' horror start to ace chase

Not sure how you got that idea, I never once had a go at Marsh or Green, and won’t, as I admire both their approaches to their cricket and admire the setup which produces as many all rounders as WA cricket does. I also admire the approach of Labuschagne, whose type of cricket in ODI’s has a role, particularly in situations like this game. I think you’ll find if you reread my posts that I am a fan of technique – hitting thru the ball – as Marsh and Green do – while frustrated with crossbat swipes from ball one like ‘back yourself’ types Maxwell & Carey who often get a run too high in the order.
I think you’ll also find if you reread, that I criticised the whole top order for their failure in this game and was being sarcastic about those two being at 4. I agree, Green needs to bat higher, but when Head is ready, he’ll open and Marsh will be at 3/4 with Smith. Green at 5/6 works better with Maxwell at 8.

Marsh's Kohli drop cruels Aussies as Indian star overcomes hosts' horror start to ace chase

No, you’re right, Labuschagne coming off two or three scores over fifty, stabilising and then accelerating to a run a ball or better is a liability that situation didn’t warrant. Maxwell ‘backing himself’ or Carey playing reverse sweeps from ball one is the answer at 4. Who cares about assessing a track and conditions? Apparently ‘pundits’ believe Australia is underdone not having more than one spinner in those conditions, but swinging from the ring is the order of the day in every match regardless.
