Hi Jimmmy, its the cultural defence of Ponga, the excuse that it was incidental, the criticism of the sin bin and the failure to proceed to the judiciary. The ref did exactly the right thing. But why the criticism. Ponga got what he deserved and should get 1-2 weeks.
Nothing wrong with hitting with the shoulder in conjunction with the arms. Ponga was a shoulder charge on a player in a vulnerable position, that doesn’t make RL tougher, its tough enough already, it just makes it dangerous. The vision of Chee Kam was hard to look at, that type of incident may happen again, it may even happen in rugby, but discretionary application of the rules and the culture where incidents like that are quickly excused as incidental make repeat incidents like that more likely in RL than RU. Ponga doesn’t need to be executed on the spot, just send him to the judiciary for illegal reckless contact with a player resulting in severe injury.

Absolutely 4.20, the 10 metre rule and the collisions that occur in RL are second to none and make it the most combative sport out there.

Hi Randy, its more that the decision to sin-bin was again criticised and that the usual argument that what happened to Chee Kam was unavoidable. Plus the rule being so open to interpretation only some shoulder charges are worth sending to the judiciary. For me that type of incident is always a sin bin and 1-2 weeks on the sideline not for intent but for carelessness.

Small correction….”The shoulder charge rule and Michael Chee Kam’s injuries were incidental”.
Was meant to link to the stanza before regarding typical discussion about what is the usual talk in reaction to an incident including the rule itself and injuries always seeming to be incidental.

Hi Ad-O, one of the counter claim to an article such as mine was that it was jingoistic as an Australian athlete is one of the major parties. However its all athletes that get duded by sporting bodies FINA and WADA not being on the same page. Last night an English athlete made the same protest.
Mack Horton's stance is about much more than a problem with Sun Yang
Just had a look at the comments to see if I needed to reply or to respond before the currency of my article runs out due to the start of the CWC final……..but low and behold RAIN DELAY and a top of 23 degrees!!!!!!

Appreciate the response Republican. And I too would like to declare as your roar profile suggest that I want Australia to become a republic sooner rather than later.

Until they win another World Cup, 1966 will always be their biggest sporting success and fair enough. They were close last year, and I am sure they were extremely happy for their French brothers across the channel when they won it for a 2nd time.

Ah yes, the class system, does that mean there is a whole demographic of English society couldn’t care less about the cricket world cup final or even they (sorry for using the word they) will get on the bandwagon as it probably deserves?

I don’t disagree, but there is a lot of group think and the same loud voices in RL that make it hard for fresh perspectives in debate to filter through. Yes I would say RL is culturally inferior when it comes to the respect for laws of game, the refs and sanctioning bodies. Agree Cheika’s a whinger. But that’s self interest for you.
